Which of these (if any) would you wear to a wedding?

August wedding. Mostly outside, hopefully in good weather. Hoping to have a bit of a tan as on holiday leading up to it. Size 10/12 with a bit of a mummy tummy.

V-neck dress - Purple/Floral - Ladies | H&M GB

Calf-length dress in a crêpe weave with adjustable spaghetti shoulder straps and wide smocking at the back. Deep V-neckline and a twisted detail at the front for a draped effect. Unlined.

The first one, possibly. I think the second one and the v neck one in the three different colours are too casual. Of the three colours the lilac is the best but I think the slit is too much like a beach dress.

supersonicginandtonic · 13/06/2023 11:06

Fast cheap fashion maybe all some people can afford, what a rude comment

None and I attend 4/5 weddings weekly, I’m not sure H&M fast, cheap fashion is the place for a wedding outfit.

Snob

bellinisurge · 13/06/2023 11:10

I wore a beach dress to my last two weddings. Planning to do so again . My family love me and just want me there

Catspyjamas17 · 13/06/2023 11:22

I like the first one best. With the others either the split is too high or they look like nighties.

So if your budget doesn't stretch beyond cheap, fast fashion what should people do? Stay away and live in a hole?

CindersAgain · 13/06/2023 11:34

The first three are a bit close to white/cream?

waltzingparrot · 13/06/2023 11:36

You could just about get away with the first one, presuming it's not a church wedding. The others are beach only.

H and M does have a whole occasionwear section, some is eveningy but there are lots of wedding suitable dresses too, for £35-£40.

I would try them on OP. Personally I think they all look suitable but H&M quality is...variable

CurlewKate · 13/06/2023 11:44

They all look too informal to me, but I am very old! The last one is my favourite though. The pink.

I should say I've never attended a wedding that wasn't very casual. My husband wore a hoodie to our own, I just recently wore a t-shirt and leggings to my brother's. So these all look pretty fancy to me but maybe I'm not the best judge 😅

SurpriseSparDay · 13/06/2023 11:50

@RattyHealy the dresses below are all on sale at H&M, some now just a couple of £s above the prices of the dresses in the OP.

none. They all look a bit beach-style and too flimsy and insubstantial up top.

If you really must have one of those, the 2nd to last one but with good (fantastic) accessories.

IhearyouClemFandango · 13/06/2023 11:54

If any, first or last.

I liked 1, 2, and 4. I worry that the light grey dress might photograph white. For caution I'd go with 2 & 4.

SurpriseSparDay · 13/06/2023 11:58

I think most people assume a degree of splendour and formality at a wedding, @Whichwhatnow . Obviously not all weddings are, but without more detail people are likely to suggest wearing something a little grander than everyday wear.

Definitely doesn’t have to mean spending a fortune one doesn’t have! The obvious thing would be to borrow from a friend or family member. Or trawl charity shops or Vinted / eBay / wherever. Or simply keep a close eye on the sales (easiest online) and snap up a suitable dress when you see it, so it’s ready for an event. (I suspect hiring involves an initial expense that might be challenging if one’s on a very limited budget. But it’s another option.)

I'm sure you're right, that's why I said I'm probably not the best judge! Just in my friendship group and family it's very casual. I can't even imagine putting on a formal dress.

Booklover40 · 13/06/2023 12:17

No one would bat an eyelid if you wore any of these to a wedding op (I wouldn’t wear the lilac/grey one though as it’s a bit bridesmaidy)- dressed up with a shrug, heels and clutch they’d be perfectly acceptable.

The comments regarding dresses from H&M not being suitable are just nasty and tone deaf. My wedding was quite a formal affair on a boiling hot day - most of the women wore dresses not dissimilar to what you’ve posted - many wore fascinators or nice headbands. I wouldn’t have given a crap which shop their dresses came from or how much they cost - I was just thrilled everyone came.

Wear whichever one makes you feel good.

ZacharinaQuack · 13/06/2023 12:20

If your budget is tight, I'd look on ebay and buy a more expensive brand secondhand. Often the condition is very good for 'occasion' dresses because people don't wear them many times. And at the more expensive end of the high street, the sizing is more consistent because they will be using the same suppliers rather than switching between whichever is cheapest. Go into e.g. Whistles, try on all the dresses to see what size you are, and then there's a pretty good chance anything you buy on ebay or Vinted in that size will fit.

Cynthia12 · 13/06/2023 12:20

If you need to wear a bra, none of them.
How are your shoulders and upper arms?
I couldn't. 4 or 5, if she turns round quickly her boobs would fall out.

WonderDays · 13/06/2023 12:23

The pink one is best but I think you could find something better for not much more money.

usernother · 13/06/2023 12:26

None. All too casual. Sorry.
