It’s madness for me to buy a silk summer dress isn’t it?

I’ve seen a dress I really love. But it’s 100% silk and expensive even in the sale.

I am not a naturally tidy person.

It would be madness for me to buy it wouldn’t it? Please remind me how easily silk stains etc

The dry cleaning would put me off. Silk in itself is fine but not if I can't wash it!

BigSkies2022 · 11/06/2023 09:54

@MissLucyEyelesbarrow I bought one of these https://www.sweatshieldundershirt.co.uk/products/womens-sweat-proof-undershirt-scoop-neck in white, following a recommendation from a S&B thread. I find it very comfortable under the silk shirts and no sweat comes through. It's thin, so doesn't add bulk if you are tucking shirts into the waistband.

Sorry if this solution upsets other silk-wearers on the thread, but I find it works very well for me!

Women's Sweat Proof Undershirt (Scoop Neck)

Designed especially for women to look and feel great: our scoop neck undershirt works day and night, and it's versatile, comfortable, and easy to layer. People won't be able to tell you're wearing a sweat proof undershirt.

@Puccini1900 - yes there is one on sale in the U.K. store ( also online but more expensive bizarrely and I had a terrible experience with their online shopping!).

Or rather there was one before I bought it 😁

It is an extravagance (single parent so not dripping in money!) but ( not drip feeding) I had a major operation last year which changed my body shape and I’ve struggled to adjust. I just felt really ‘me’ in this for the first time in ages.

That’s the true magic of the right outfit - makes you feel more like yourself - enjoy.

thanks for the sweat link @BigSkies2022 very handy!!

Get it, YOLO

ChocChipHandbag · 11/06/2023 11:37

The model looks like she hates it!

But it is nice and if it suited you and made you feel good after your op you should defo it wit go for it. Just follow the care instructions really, really carefully.

Congrats OP!

now you have bought it and don’t need to worry about it going out of stock, please could you tell me the brand so I can check out their other offerings? I really like the dress.

Wearing a modal fiber undershirt doesn't upset me at all, @BigSkies2022 you are obviously free to wear what you want. To me though, the main benefit of wearing silk is to have it next to your skin so you can take advantage of its unique and inimitable qualities. Silk is so breatheable, especially in summer. The more layers you wear the warmer you get. Especially with an undershirt. But then I can't stand modal fabrics. They are too warm for me even in winter. I prefer cotton or wool.
I used to have some silk undershirts and they were fantastic. But with age I am always warm now! Silk is fantastic for both warmth and staying cool. Can't say it enough!
@Dancingoapin yes, sewing for family, home and self is a wonderful skill and passion! I acquired it from watching all the efforts of my DM and DGMs in a home full of women. But you can learn as an adult if you are interested! Patience comes with time and practice! Even my adult DD has finally been bitten by the bug and loves to make gifts for friends despite working and 2 DC.

I have found that today if you have a ready-wear shaped body it is often not less expensive to make your own clothes. However, once you are bitten by the fine fabric bug and tailored fitting it is a very worthwhile skill to have.

I see OP , you are going to order your silk dress . I hope you will be delighted!

I agree with others saying it's easy to wash at home. Make sure it's not rinsed too much as it'll look better if it's hung up to dry while still fairly wet.

Glad you got it!

MySoCalledWife · 11/06/2023 17:06

I have 3 silk dresses

They are very breathable

Very nice to wear

I machine wash them Blush on a cold "silk wash" with a very mild detergent (no harsh bio stuff)

I have a silk skirt from the 90s I am bringing out again Grin

Buy it, wear it, love it

Wintry57 · 11/06/2023 18:37

Oh yes I machine wash my silk shirts too on cold,
special silk wash and no / v low spin and they’re fine. And I try not to wash them much - have a fabric refresher. Several years on for most of them.

Dancingoapin · 11/06/2023 19:08

@Labradory - sorry I hadn’t seen your earlier message!

It’s Gerard Darel - they don’t have huge amounts of pure silk though ( like many others lots of viscose these days!).

Labradory · 11/06/2023 21:30

@Dancingoapin Thank you! Funnily enough I have a black silk jumpsuit from Gerard Darel which I bought about 4 years ago. It’s absolutely lovely and is my fail-safe Going Out outfit, whatever the weather as it’s lovely and cool in summer but warm in winter. I definitely recommend them. Never occurred to me to check if they did dresses!

Dancingoapin · 11/06/2023 21:35

@Labradory - they are quite hard to find in stock these days and are very £££ but their sales are usually good!

Im quite narrow framed but with a bit of a bust, but find lots of their stuff really fitted me when I tried it on. I think the dresses are slightly narrower cut than a lot of brands.

It is rare to feel like this about an item of clothing nowadays. I have barely anything in my wardrobe because everything is overpriced and shit, and rarely makes me feel good.
So i say GET THE DRESS!

You must be able to afford it or else you wouldnt have made the post, even if it might cause a restriction for a little while. I know exactly what you mean OP, I am an artist on a fragile income and if i saw something so special i would get it.
