It’s madness for me to buy a silk summer dress isn’t it?

Dancingoapin · 10/06/2023 16:54

I’ve seen a dress I really love. But it’s 100% silk and expensive even in the sale.

I am not a naturally tidy person.

It would be madness for me to buy it wouldn’t it? Please remind me how easily silk stains etc

Where is it from? I love silk dresses and I love the style of that one. The colour wouldn’t work for me but I’d love to know the brand so I can keep an eye out for new versions.

p.s. I think you should buy it.

AnnaKareninnit · 10/06/2023 18:54

Silk is wonderful in hot weather.
I stick all of my silk dresses and blouses in the machine on a 20 degree wool cycle, regardless of what it says on the label. I enjoy wearing them, and on a 'cost per wear' basis, machine washing them is much better!

crabbyoldappletree · 10/06/2023 18:55

Silk is easy to wash on a delicate cycle, it's cool in summer, and warm in winter, some silk is now ethically produced, and doesn't kill the silk worm larvae, and provides a fair wage for the workers, making it more environmentally and human friendly option compared to other fabrics.

Pandonut · 10/06/2023 18:59

If you can afford it then go for it! I used to flinch at spending a lot on one item of clothing, but I have more of a capsule wardrobe now and have fewer items but they're all high quality and I get a load of wear out of them. As long as you promise yourself you'll wear it and not keep it for best as has been mentioned!

LunaNorth · 10/06/2023 19:30

Doitdoitdoit

It’s a lovely dress.

Whataretalkingabout · 10/06/2023 19:31

Pure Silk is a marvelous fabric. (Pure wool, linen too). Cool in the summer, warm in the winter. It breathes- unlike synthetic fabrics, does not hardly wrinkle, dries very quickly, doesn't show perspiration ( though some satin silks may). It is extremely easy to launder by hand . Dries very quickly. Is moth resistant. Somewhat difficult to sew because it is slippery but much sturdier and resistant than you would imagine. Basicly silk is the best fabric you can buy for a dress but also for many other purposes. Yes it is somewhat expensive but it is worth it. Better to buy one nice silk dress this year and nothing else.
You will get alot of use out of this one OP since it is so simple. I sew silk dresses and tops for myself and frankly £200 is very reasonable. Be sure to check to see that it is real silk!

Hope this helps!

Dancingoapin · 10/06/2023 17:57

It’s patterned and it’s £200. Which is a lot!

Actually, I think that's a very reasonable price.

I have several silk summer dresses, one of which was $600. All are sleeveless which means that all I need to do is air them thoroughly between wearing, and when summer is over, they are dry cleaned and put away until the following summer.

WobblyLondoner · 10/06/2023 19:46

Has anyone mentioned sweat yet? Silk shows up any kind of moisture really badly. I had a gorgeous silk shirt that I just couldn't wear because any kind of sweatiness was - er - very visible.

WobblyLondoner · 10/06/2023 19:47

Ok ignore me - I don't think you'd notice it in the dress you've shown!

Chewbecca · 10/06/2023 20:03

I love wearing silk, it feels so good on the skin. It sounds like this dress has given you the feels so if you can afford it, I say go for it.

BigSkies2022 · 10/06/2023 20:27

Sweat wicking undershirts are useful if you are worried about stains in the armpits. I love a silk shirt, and these little vests ensure I don't ever stain the 'pits. But if it's food stains you're worried about, OP, can't help you there!

YOLO, and you're a long time dead. Buy it, love it, wear it.

nopuppiesallowed · 10/06/2023 20:32

Anyone suggest a silk shirt not made in China?

nzeire · 10/06/2023 20:33

You MUST get it! It’s lovely!!!

Oneearringlost · 10/06/2023 20:33

Will you regret buying it, looking at it, wearing it... even if it stains....or regret it more, not buying it and yearning for it evermore?
Go on....! Get pleasure and happiness from it.

Wintry57 · 10/06/2023 20:42

looks gorgeous to me!

Oblomov23 · 10/06/2023 20:42

If you like it, go for it. £200 is nothing to some on MN.

midsomermurderess · 10/06/2023 21:00

Some of those The Fold dresses are beautiful.

That is an excellent idea. Can I ask where you get them?

Whataretalkingabout · 10/06/2023 21:42

@BigSkies2022 who would dream of wearing an undershirt of any kind under silk? Why bother wearing silk then? Silk washes really well!! Use lukewarm water and VERY LITTLE detergent.

Wishona · 10/06/2023 22:40

I’ve worn a pure silk sundress today. It’s a Jigsaw one from eBay though!

Dancingoapin · 11/06/2023 08:01

Thank you for all the replies everyone!

I think I will buy it and at least try it on again at home! I saw it 2 months ago and couldn’t justify at full price but obviously kept going back to look.

Loving all the silk love on the thread!

@Whataretalkingabout - I wish I could sew - my mum made all our clothes when we were little ( and lots of other stuff) but I’m genuinely two thumbs/lack patience etc whenever I’ve tried. Must be lovely being able to make things just how you like

Puccini1900 · 11/06/2023 08:07

I can only find out at it's original £365 price tag, but if you can find it on sale OP, get it! It's looovely!!!!

Divebar2021 · 11/06/2023 08:16

I was sorting clothes out yesterday and came across a silk dress I had from Jaeger. I wore that dress all the time… wore it to work and to weddings etc. At the moment I’m too far for it but I’m not getting rid… it was a great investment.

Divebar2021 · 11/06/2023 08:16

Too fat for it 🙄
