Tote bags: how do you stop everything falling out?

Totes drive me mad because, every time I put them in my boot/on a luggage rack/under a plane seat, everything falls out. I used to get a work bag with a zip top but these are now so hard to find (I don't want anything as formal as a briefcase, and I don't want a backpack) that I'm going to have to embrace the tote.

So, how do you manage it? Do you have everything in pouches? Isn't that a faff?

I don't. I've given up on bags without a zip.
Mia Tui do quite a few tote-looking bags that also have zips, may be worth a look

I use a large fabric crossbody with a zip which is casual and fits everything! But there are loads of bag options with zips that aren't briefcases or rucksacks!

Just search 'tote bags with zips' on Amazon. Lots of choice.

I'd never get on a plane with a bag without a zip

You can get zipped totes. I refuse to buy the unzipped totes.

With cotton totes I loosely tie the handles together before putting it under the buggy/in the boot etc.

I'll have a browse on Amazon, but I'm looking for something reasonably smart for work, but also not briefcasey. My go-to has always been an Osprey hobo but they have stopped making them with zips.

I always get one with some sort of fastening at the top - even just one of those big magnetic poppers is better than nothing. I've had far too many occasions when I've had an open topped one in the passenger seat footwell and then braked and it's fallen over and everything has rolled under the seat.

I bought a brilliant tote bag today with a zip from decathlon. It's in their gym bag section. I'll find a photo. It has an inner zip pocket too which is fab.

I've looked on their website and it's not on there so it must have been a return in the decathlon shop I went to. Anyway I love as it's just what I wanted to replace my current one that's got a hole on the bottom corner

Thank you, @blueshoes and @HappiDaze . Sadly the Osprey hobo is too small - they used to do a larger version with a zip, but now it just has a popper 🙄. But I will have a look at the others you found.

The Decathlon tote might not do me for work, but it looks perfect for travel etc so will get onto their website now.
