What casual clothes and sportswear do teenage girls wear?

My 17 year old dd is not particularly into fashion and lives in black leggings, baggy t shirts and trainers. She would like some new clothes for when she starts college in September and I thought I could get her some basics like a nice hoody, sports leggings, a jacket and she wants new trainers.

What styles and brands are in/popular? I want her to have what other young people are into as otherwise there is a danger she won’t wear it. Also she is into sustainability not fast fashion so I know it will cost me!

When I was in college, the fashion very much depended on the course and obviously the individual. I noticed that the business courses seemed to dress up more whereas the science courses were more jeans, hoodies, tracksuits etc and the arts were more eclectic. I'm generalising here obviously and there were outliers who had very much their own style, but there was quite a noticeable pattern. Your dd should wear what she wants imo, but if she is concerned about fitting in then maybe it would be better to buy just a few new things, wait and see what others in the course are wearing, and then buy more accordingly. I remember feeling quite overdressed in the first few days (science course) and started to dress more casually!
Silly though really as there's nothing wrong with not following the herd.

17 yo here mainly wears leggings & crop tops & hoodies. When it's colder, fleecy joggers. Sometimes jeans & vest top.

Dress down days they're all in leggings/track pants/joggers and vest tops/hoodies.

I'd definitely just get a few pieces & add to it once she starts & don't buy anything she hasn't chosen herself!

my (daft) friend bought her daughter liads if things she felt she should be wearing to college. Then whinged when she asked for more leggings/joggers etc & shunned the casual but 'not quite right' clothing my friend had bought. A couple of us had said 'don't do it' but got the usual 'me & DD are soooo close I know she'll love it all' 🙄🙄🙇🏻‍♀️

Park up outside the college and have a look.

Brand popularity varies from place to place,
If your DD is into sustainability she can shop on Vinted.
