How often do most women change their glasses frames?

I like my prescription and it's working out fine but my glasses are kind of not very stylish anymore. I'm seeing people wearing nice frames and I should really update mine but if those new frames go out of style I'll need to get new glasses yet again in a couple years. I'm at the age where my prescription isn't changing all that much. Just the frames are really dated.

How often would one get new glasses anyway? Every 2 years?

I get an eye test evey 2 years so tend to get new glasses at the same time, whether my prescription has changed or not.

Lamelie · 08/06/2023 00:20

Every year. I break them and my prescription changes.

Luckingfovely · 08/06/2023 00:22

Umm... I think most grown up women get frames that suit their face and their personal style. And then change them when they need to get new lenses.

Unless you're talking about the mad extremes of fashion, I really can't fathom what you think you could buy now that would be so out of date in two years.

TheCyclingGorilla · 08/06/2023 00:23

Every two years.

A colleague of mine buys vintage cats eyes frames and gets her optician to put her prescription lenses in them. She looks very retro and has several pairs.

UsingChangeofName · 08/06/2023 00:23

I've just got a new pair, after 7 years with my last pair.

I will admit they are a pretty similar style though - it is just that I needed new lenses.

mrsmacmc · 08/06/2023 00:27

Usually every 2yrs when I go for an eye test for my everyday wearing glasses and every 4yrs for prescription sunglasses if my prescription hasn't changed.

DH's prescription doesn't really change so he usually does 4-6yrs frames wise unless he breaks them as he grudges spending money 🤨

Zooeyzebra · 08/06/2023 00:33

Every year. My health insurance covers it, so why not. I also have two different pairs in rotation normally. And contacts.

I don’t think fashion changes that quickly with glasses, just get what you like and suits your face. They are normally good at suggesting options in the optometrist

Prescription sunglasses have been the same frames for at least 7 years though - just plain old ray bans that still look decent.

MedievalMadness · 08/06/2023 00:33

When my prescription changes. I've just got new ones after 4 years . Must admit I was fed up with them and ready for a change but at the price of the wretched things I only change when prescription changes

pizzaHeart · 08/06/2023 00:36

I do eye test every year and change frames when I got a new prescription or if my frame is worn out. The current one is at least 4 years old.
My lenses are not cheap + I struggle with choice of frames due to size/ face shape so I can’t change glasses often even if I wished.

DramaAlpaca · 08/06/2023 00:37

Every two to three years. My lenses are complex and very expensive so rarely more often than that unless my prescription changes. As long as my frames suit me I'm happy enough.

tregunamekoidestrecorumsatisdee · 08/06/2023 00:53

Every 2 years

SummerSun04 · 08/06/2023 00:54

I've had my current 2 pairs for about 8 years. I bought new frames but haven't got around to getting lenses put it.

EBearhug · 08/06/2023 01:53

When the prescription changes or they get broken.

Cupcakegirl13 · 08/06/2023 05:04

Every 2 years for my everyday glasses in line with my eye tests regardless of whether prescription changes , every 4 for sunglasses unless prescription has changed.

WhisperingAutistic · 08/06/2023 06:53

Every 2 years when I have my eyes tested.

Floisme · 08/06/2023 06:59

Whenever my prescription changes which is normally every couple of years. But that's because I wear them every waking moment and, after a couple of years I'm itching for a change.

Trends in frames change very slowly so I really don't think you need worry about them looking dated after a couple of years. II've probably worn a broadly similar shape for the last 12 years at least.

mycoffeecup · 08/06/2023 07:00

When my prescription changes. Went 10y with the same ones, then had to change 3 times in 7 years.

Miabella89 · 08/06/2023 07:06

I do eye test every year but but I change frames every two - three years, it depends if the frame is worn out.

AuntieMarys · 08/06/2023 07:07

Every year. I wear varifocals, which aren't cheap but I get bored of the frames. Just bought some for £360...get £120 back on my health plan.

Fairislefandango · 08/06/2023 07:10

Every 2 years if my prescription changes. I agree with a previous poster - unless you go for something pretty wacky, I can't see how it would go out of style. People choose what suits their face shape imo.

underneaththeash · 08/06/2023 07:10

I always have several pairs on the go at once which do different things. Distance/near/varifocals/rx sunglasses/photochromics. Always in nice frames.

But then I am an optometrist!

Most people change annually/biannually. Although there are people that love their old frame and only change when it is actually falling to bit and even then want us to track down the same frame for them.

HawdMeBack · 08/06/2023 07:10

I've had the same frames for almost 9 years, I love them. Had them replaced a couple of times when my prescription has changed.

EvenmoreDisorganised · 08/06/2023 07:10

Every 5 years or so. I mainly wear contacts but have a very strong prescription that makes glasses expensive and massively restricts my choices so I stick with them till my prescription changes or they fall apart.

CMOTDibbler · 08/06/2023 07:17

I've never made it past 2 years without needing a change in my prescription, so get new frames (which are on my face every waking moment) then. My lenses are very complicated and expensive so I can't dream of having fashionable frames- and as a lifelong glasses wearer I have enough misguided choices to look back on tbh
