How often do most women change their glasses frames?

CanadianReader · 08/06/2023 00:04

I like my prescription and it's working out fine but my glasses are kind of not very stylish anymore. I'm seeing people wearing nice frames and I should really update mine but if those new frames go out of style I'll need to get new glasses yet again in a couple years. I'm at the age where my prescription isn't changing all that much. Just the frames are really dated.

How often would one get new glasses anyway? Every 2 years?

Every 4-5 years.

Cincinnatus · 08/06/2023 07:21

Every year. Even though I always pay for anti scratch or whatever it’s called they still seem to get scratched.

dizzygirl1 · 08/06/2023 07:25

Some depends on your prescription. I've got a high prescription so mine cost several hundreds for the lenses alone, therefore I change mine infrequently due to cost.
If you've got a low prescription and can do the '2 for £29' or whatever then its different I feel personally.

dudsville · 08/06/2023 07:32

I haaaaate going so I always put it off too long between visits. I didn't know some people get to an age where their prescription stops changing, mine's always jumping about. It's been worse since I've needed bifocals but didn't get on with them so it's tricky. My current script is a couple of years old and I doubt I'll go for another 2 or 3 yrs. I've been wearing glasses since i was 9. I don't mind it and quite like the look. I tried contacts in my youth but that wasn't for me. Next time I'll go ill also get new sunglasses. I've always had a cheap pair and I'd like to get something more substantial and cool looking.

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 08/06/2023 07:35

I've had new lenses put in my current frames twice now I think. So they must be about 5 years old.

I love the frames and can't afford to replace them. I don't like any of the ones the NHS voucher covered as much as i love these, so just used it for lenses instead.

The arms are getting a little wobbly though so I'm worried they won't last much longer Sad

I have a really complex prescription- I’m -9.50 both eyes with astigmatism and retinal issues. My lenses alone are £500. So I tend to go for the cheapest nicest frame I can find and make that last as long as I can. I’d love to be able to go to Specsavers or Asda or whatever and have a few different frames etc on the go for different outfits but their lenses just aren’t good enough for my prescription- tried and alway end up returning them for a refund. I would have to have a whole drawer of glasses to choose from everyday.

EvenmoreDisorganised · 08/06/2023 07:56

Yes, I'd love to be able to go cheaper and more frequent changes but just can't with my prescription. Contact lenses are brilliant because you can change the prescription whenever you need to and they don't have restricted choices in the same way glasses do (I'm -10 in contacts, -12 in glasses).

Thighdentitycrisis · 08/06/2023 08:00

My current ones are about 4 years old and getting a bit grotty. My prescription is expensive though so I save money by reusing the frame

missmoon · 08/06/2023 08:24

Every 3-4 years usually, to keep up with my prescription changing. But I just got some new ones after 2 years because the old frame wasn’t a good fit, I struggled with it and then decided I needed new ones.

missmoon · 08/06/2023 08:24

It’s harder now with varifocals because of the cost.

ilovecherries · 08/06/2023 08:38

I’m like you, OP, in that the last time I needed a new prescription was 2017. I look after my glasses and I also wear contacts. I just had my two yearly test and my prescription is the same again. I am feeling this time though that my frames are starting to look not quite right. It’s not about high fashion, it’s just that they aren’t looking current any more. I didn’t change them in 2019 as I was still happy with them, and in 2021 I wasn’t choosing frames I didn’t need while wearing a mask, but I’m going to relegate my current ones to ‘emergency spare’ status and get new everyday glasses and sunnies.

Lamelie · 08/06/2023 09:50

Having said I replace yearly I’m perhaps not the best advert, but the cost is part of the reason I do!

I use to charge every few years. But the bought Lindberg frames which can be reglazed. I've had about three different looks with the same frame. They aren't cheap but have lasted 7 years.

BodyKeepingScore · 08/06/2023 10:07

I only tend to change mine if my prescription has changed. If it's the same at my check up I don't bother.

Every 2 years.

gogohmm · 08/06/2023 11:37

When I need a new prescription which unfortunately for me is quite often, rarely more than 2 years

countrygirl99 · 08/06/2023 12:06

Only when I need to.

FANCHEA · 08/06/2023 13:24

I've a straightforward prescription so I can go to places like iollla, 85 quid all in. This works for me as I invariably trash them (on again off again) and also means I can have a few pairs on the go. Would that work for you?

xogossipgirlxo · 08/06/2023 14:55

Only with new prescription. If I can, I replace lenses. Last time I had new glasses in 2019.

CanadianReader · 10/06/2023 17:18

I'll just replace my old fashioned glasses this time and keep them till I feel it's time.

Hi I also have a very high prescription-8 and varifocals so only change them every 4-5 years - that said I don’t like the ones I have now as got blue tinted lenses supposedly to avoid eye strain from computer etc not sure it makes any difference and I don’t like the slight blue tint you can see
i find it really hard to choose frames as they look so different when I get my lenses in them even though I pay for extra thin lenses etc
X-rays and evenmoredisorganised you made me feel I wasn’t the only one with a high prescription - any advice in choosing a frame ? I’ve been told smaller is better as makes lenses look better ?

Lamelie · 10/06/2023 18:38

@Chickenlicken15 look into Brillen- I just got two pairs for £115- mainly because I didn’t like my reactolites.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 10/06/2023 18:48

I change mine every eye test, so normally every 2 years. I'm always ready for a change by that point. I have a -9, -9.5 prescription with astigmatism. I know Specsavers takes some flak on here, but as I am also on their Lensmail scheme they are so much cheaper than anywhere else - I think my last pair were £200 including high indexed varifocal lenses.

MerryMarigold · 10/06/2023 18:50

Mine are very expensive (high index/ varifocal) so I wait for the prescription to change. I usually buy 2 pairs at a time so I have a spare. One set lasted about 7 years. The next was about 4.
