Shorts, always wanted to wear em, but never have.

No idea why, but i didn't like wearing them as a child at school so i think it just stuck..

I am 48, slim, but have very white legs and a slight wobble as not entirely toned. And of course this is no big deal, but i dont exist in a vacuum and old self esteem issues die hard!

Anyone else like this? Do you just say sod it and wear them? Do you tan them (fake or real)? I am not after perfection and dont even know what that is, but am a little bit hesitant. I have a couple of nice pairs and as the weather gets hotter i just want to throw them on with a nice top and get out there.

I know no one else cares or is even looking, it's just my own mind really.

l am 54, tall, slim and toned, have a physical job, I wear shorts at home, but l put a dress on if going out as feel more elegant.

Use gradual daily self tan for 3 days - try Gatineau, you don't need lots of colour, but it really gives you a glow and evens out skin tone. Tan Luxe is also good.

I wear magic shorts, same as magic trousers but a shorter version, mid thigh length ( not Bermuda length). I also wear them under shorter (and quite often semi see through) sun dresses. They pull on, seem to hold everything in, don't dig in anywhere and flatter.

Vest top, hoody and shorts with flip flops is my go to wardrobe from May - Sept. I did used to have very toned long legs, now I have thick wobbly thighs on skinny calves which could easily fit in with blackpool illuminations they are so white…..

But I hate fake tan, and my legs will only get a bit less white if they see the sun with some suntan lotion so out they come.

I know how you feel about white legs - I avoided shorts for years because I couldn’t find a decent fake tan. I started using a gradual tan (I think it was Palmers) which was fine but took a while to build. I now use Skinny Tan mousse (blue and white container) and apply it with a mitt. Game changer! I’ve tried a few other Skinny Tan products but they still seemed to leave me with streaks. It lasts about a week so not too much maintenance.

I’m still not confident enough to go out with white legs but my confidence has definitely improved over the last few years. I also agree with the poster that said knee length shorts are difficult to pull off - mine are all above mid-thigh any shorter makes my legs look dumpy.

I suggest dressing in said outfit then just immediately go out in it without overthinking it, go into town and marvel how nobody probably even notices you in your lovely shorts. In ten years' time you'll wish you'd done it ten years ago. Get your legs out!et your knees be free!

I regret the years when I didn't wear shorts because of ridiculous self consciousness. Looking back, I had really nice legs! Toned dancer's legs 😭
Now that they are much less nice, but I don't care any more, I'm determined to make up for the missing shorts years

Me too. 64 5'2 and size 14. I live in shorts when it's sunny. The dazzling whiteness mellows fairly quickly. I never sunbathe just potter round the garden, walk the dogs etc and use sunscreen.

I had no idea that shorts were such a minefield! They are my go-to in the summer.

I feel quite sad for all the women here saying they aren’t brave enough to wear shorts. I developed a complex during my 30’s where I would look longingly at people my age and older wearing shorts while I baked in some sort of cropped trousers or longer skirt.
Then one day it dawned on me that not a single person genuinely gives a flying fig what my legs look like or what I’m wearing and I bought shorts. All the shorts. I don’t use fake tan, I have spider veins and legs that can be seen in the dark and my leg’s best days are behind me now in my mid 40’s and I don’t give a shit. It’s bloody liberating. Nobody looks at men with bottle white, skinny/fat/veiny/overly hairy legs and says anything, so why shouldn’t we enjoy their practicality too?
Get the shorts! Enjoy the shorts! In 10 years time your legs are only going to be 10 years older again and you’ll wish you had just said Fuck It at the time. I wasted 15 years worrying what other people think and life’s too short.

Bring it on. Body Positivity for Sure. No different from bingo wings, thong-style bikini bottoms & bald heads. All should be allowed out. Not offensive at all.

I love shorts. There are also so many lengths, cuts and fabrics that it's worth trying on different styles. I put sunscreen on my legs and I'm rarely out the entire day, but over the course of a month I get a bit tanned.

Tbh not sure why people are ok with short skirts and not shorts - the show the same amount of leg, plus with small kids, shorts are so much more practical as you don't need to worry about flashing your underwear when windy at the playground/picking up kids. This might be slightly cultural as I find lots of Brits seem to think shorts are v casual and not appropriate to be worn outside the home (I have lots of friends who think that)

What about short shorts at 45? Like a lot of others, knee length is massively unflattering on me. In my 20s/30s I went short (not buttock revealing short-short, but maybe a couple of inches below crotch level) as it was all that suited my shape… More recently I’ve stuck to dresses. Is there an alternative out there?

@HighInTheHills they were these but just looked and completely sold out now unfortunately ( if they happen to come in stock they fit slightly small so if between sizes I’d go for the bigger)

Auntiemarys you must be as tall as my oldest DD,she's 6ft. Going through the menopause and belly fat so I've inherited some of her shorts, got some on now,black linen. I'm 72!
