What 5 things would make me look more current

I’m late 40s and would just like to look a bit more fashionable. I dress fairly casually and do have some nice things, having been buying less but spending a bit more on individual items that last. I just would like to feel a little bit edgier though.

What would you say are 5 key pieces that could help do this.

I’m tall (5’9) and a size 10. Tend to wear neutral colours.

Leather or faux leather trousers
Waistcoat
Khaki/camo jacket
Silk dress/shirt dress
Alexander McQueen handbag

Oh Jesus no, not the waistcoat. I was lured in during The Great Waistcoating of 2005 due to my youth and naïveté and I walked around all autumn looking like a female snooker player. Let's definitely not do that again.

Ha, well yes when styled like that..

I have to say I’ve been influenced by some late 20 year old fashion instagramers who are wearing a waistcoat with nothing underneath with a wide leg trousers or a baggy jean. It’s not for everyone, I concur..!

Mumsnut · 09/06/2023 18:28

I have succumbed to the waistcoat, but do I look sharp, stylish and cool ?

Nope. I look like Mumford & Sons

Haha! Yes me too around that time and I had one in a very similar Grey to this too 🙈

Haha! Ok, I think I’ll pass on the waistcoat and leave it to the youngsters x

I'll be doing a waistcoat again. Definitely. Very fond of them.
I've never fastened one in my life though. And I prefer them over a T shirt.

Mumsnut · 09/06/2023 18:56

You are wise, Floisme

I'm pretty much the same as you OP but my sister is a stylist (conscious fashion) and she suggested to me:

A gold, short necklace. Lots around atm with zodiac signs etc.. I got mine from Anthropolgie but I've seen others at a lower price point.

Chunky, gladiator sandals but they must have crossed straps somewhere, not horizontal straps all the way up if that makes sense?

A middle parting but not too precise.

Always tuck in, no matter your body shape.

No pointy nails, just nicely polished and rounded.

Cross body bags worn high like a previous poster said are good.

Thick eyebrows, no tadpole or arched shapes.

Wide trousers but no higher than ankle length or it tends to look like someone on a saga coach trip, I learnt the hard way.

If you have prescription sunglasses they need to be very dark as my sister told me I look like a middle aged man/paedo.

That's all I remember from my harrowing styling session!

So … someone on a Saga coach trip (that is, someone over fifty) can disguise the fact that they’re over fifty by ensuring their trouser hems aren’t higher than their ankles? Because - no self respecting human would want the world to know they’ve survived fifty years of life?

I got my travel insurance from Saga last year … Never been on a coach holiday though.

I can't wait for your contribution to edgy and on trend suggestions 🤐🙊

Rina66 · 10/06/2023 08:05

As you say you dress casually and in neutrals:

  • shorts & shirt co-ord in stone linen or cheesecloth
  • satin bias midi in taupe
  • cream or camel oversized blazer
  • cream waistcoat
  • wider leg jeans

All the above can be worn together in various combinations.

Your sister is an idiot. HTH.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/06/2023 08:12

I used to like wearing waistcoats to work. Tempted…

Almahart · 10/06/2023 08:12

That was a bit of a mean response. What's wrong with the sister's advice? She's not insisting that anyone do any of these things, she's just pointing out what she has observed is on trend at the moment.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/06/2023 08:15

It’s mean to say that somebody who tells their sister that sunglasses make them look like a middle aged male paedophile is an idiot? Okay.

Almahart · 10/06/2023 08:19

Ah okay, I hadn't really clocked that bit of it this early in the morning. Fair enough.
