Casual jacket for when it's hot?

Other than a denim jacket what would your go to options be for a warm spring/summer day to cover up your shoulders and arms?

We're imagining days out and BBQs that carry on until the evening where it gets a bit cooler, I get cold quite easily so like to have something with me in case I need it later in the day.

Usually it's a denim jacket or a thin cardigan but I'm looking at alternatives for this year. Something light, stylish, versatile.

I'm 30, size 12, 5 foot 5. In anything cropped I tend to look very middle-heavy so nothing cropped please.

All suggestions welcome, please and thank you!

Oh I forgot to mention..

I'm not loaded but maybe up to £50-60 if it's something I can get use out of each year like my denim jacket. Ideally no fast fashion either from an ethical + quality point of view.

Hi, I’m facing the same conundrum. My denim jacket and leather blazer aren’t quite right this year. Im considering the following;

  • short blazer in a thin material (I have one which has seen better days, so I’m eyeing up a couple in new look and H&M) - I’m not targeting anything pricey because I’m going to treat it like a cardy and throw it into my handbag when it gets warm. I’d suggest wearing wkth sleeves pushed up so it looks more casual.
  • jersey or knitted jackets, like the ones from from whistles. I have the short collarless ones jn a couple of colours for work, but they are causal enough to wear at the weekend too. The blazer style with the collar are a little thick for me, but still quite nicely made and the colour ranges are nice.
  • shacket (although I find that most are quite heavy or thick, so I haven’t found one I like without it looking like I’ve hit the army surplus store)
  • layered look with a thin jumper worn over the shoulders, preppy style - bit of a faff if j haven’t got the right handbag and if the fabrics are all a bit slippy, but I really like the look, so I’m going to persevere and work through the jumpers I have in my wardrobe until I hit the right look

I’ve seen some stylists push the idea of using an open oversized shirt as a layer, but I don’t think I can pull it off without looking like a bag lady, but I think that it could look good if you keep your inner layers slim fitting.

i recently purchased a lovely jacket from me&em which looks like a tweed bomber and has stretch on the cuffs of the sleeves so you can push them up. I bought it for work but it would work well for weekends. It is above your budget, but it is worth look on their website for some inspiration on how they have styled their jackets and blazers.

Thanks! Budget is flexible for the right item!

I know what you mean about the shacket. I have one but definitely feels on the thicker/warmer side of things and I have the same bag lady issue too.

I don't mind the army surplus type look normally but I have a few nicer dresses I was hoping to wear this year and they don't quite gel with that look lol

Also, I saw that you don’t want anything too cropped, this sits short, so doesn’t overwhelm dresses, but it isn’t cropped

Linen mix blazer in white/cream/beige. One that you can machine wash!

Linen shirt. Striped shirt. Lightweight slightly oversized linen blazer

I bought a lovely white linen shirt from H&M for this purpose

I've started wearing an open linen shirt instead of a jacket this year. Works so much better on my figure too and seems to work with most outfits.

I saw this in store recently and it looked and felt lovely

I love the sound of the open linen shirt. Any go-to sites?

A cotton blazer or jardigan
