Agree the re formulation of old fragrances is like someone painting over a work of art .

That’s annoying. Talking of Chanel, a lot of their make up isn’t available which is really starting to piss me off.

Just want to add that in both crystalle and no19 the edp and the edt are quite different scents. Similar but different... so those saying it has changed may be smelling a different version. Crystalle particularly is markedly different with different notes in the edt and edp.

Chanel is one of the few perfume houses that does this and not many people know about it. No5 is also different in the parfum, edp and edt although it is not so marked.

I prefer the Cristalle EDT and the No19 EDP. You are right they are markedly different.

The EDP version of Cristalle was always a re formulation of the EDT, as it was created solely as an EDT, rather than being created as parfum . So it was different from the outset, it came in before the newer EU rules that have destroyed so many older perfumes.
Cristalle is different from the original in its EDT form. I never liked the EDP version as much anyway, I feel it doesn’t suit that formulation as well as the original, but both versions have changed.
No. 19 is like a drunk busker singing a Sinatra song. It is recognisably the same thing, but all the beauty has gone.

So this makes sense in terms of how they were created, the former only intended to ever be an EDT, the latter created as Parfum, so EDP being closer to the original concentration. In every dilution or formulation they are different from twenty years ago though. Lots of scents seem to have had the Parfum strength removed from the range since perfume houses started producing EDP, which is a fairly recent innovation, which is another loss.

I think that "parfum" is disappearing due to cost. As is estrait. I notice Chanel is one of few houses who do still offer both for their flagship classics.

I collect vintage classics (especially Diors) (this may out me to some names on this thread that I recognise from the perfumistas of yore) and the difference is enormous. Guerlain I don't think have suffered as much as Guerlinade helps.

Mitsouko seems to be the most changed, do you think that is the case ? I would like to buy some L’Heure bleue but I am worried it will be a poor shadow of its old self.

They've discontinued Cristalle Eau Verte and I'm very sad. Am rationing the minute quantity I have remaining.

Thanks @SirVixofVixHall - that’s really interesting. You are clearly very knowledgeable about perfumes - I am certainly not, just have some long term favourites. I got No.19 for my 18th birthday back in 1993 and my aunts got me the body lotion, soap and talc to go with it. I’m not sure they even do the body lotion now! But I’ve always adored it and yes it probably has changed - things rarely change for the better! Funnily enough I’ve never found Dior perfumes I’ve liked or Guerlain.

My two favourites are no 19 and cristalle as well but I didnt know the background either, but agree that cristalle suits EDT more.

I loved Tom ford's vert boheme too, bought one bottle as a big treat to myself and then it was discontinued. I can never understand why my favourites are discontinued. I loved eau de givenchy as a teen, it was discontinued (altho they brought back a weak version). Barberry weekend for men is a good alternative to eat de givenchy. Then I found gucci guilty and it too was discontinued.

The perfumier Henri Robert was responsible for Chanel No 19, and also for Cristalle (made jointly with Edmond Roudnitska ) so they have a common theme.
Edmond Roudnitska made some incredible fragrances for other perfume houses, mainly Dior and Rochas.

As Parfum strength has disappeared from some ranges, so has bath soap, once such a gorgeous treat. Things like body lotion too. There seems more pressure on the big houses to bring out new fragrances, and the old masters are getting lost or neglected.

I have hunted in every single duty free for the last year and they keep saying they can’t get it anymore! I am the same…. Work it every day for 40 years…. It’s my signature smell! Don’t know what to do without it!

I noticed it in Toulouse airport duty free the other day - didn’t buy it as it cost 120 euros or something and we’re watching the pennies but maybe I should have done 😬

They had Eau Verte at Rhodes Airport in Wednesday. I initially thought it was Cristalle, danced a little jig then was thrown into utter despair.

I am still SO annoyed. Its going for stupid prices now on ebay etc.

Ohh I’m sorry it wasn’t what you wanted but I’m SO excited to hear eau verte still exists! Ive been looking for it everywhere. Off to ask anyone at the office if they’re off to Rhodes over the summer.

I'm off to France next week and hope to find Cristalle in an off the beaten track parfumerie. It has always been a favourite of mine, and fond memories as my mum wore it too.

Apparently, it’s not been discontinued. They are revamping the packaging. The rumour is the bottle will be the same as the iconic No:5. I believe it will become available again this December 2023. Let’s hope so!

I hope so! It's been going for £175 a bottle on ebay, although I managed to get one gor £120 last week. I've got 4 bottles sqirreled away now.

In my experience once something goes out of stock and then reappears with a new packaging that also means the juice has been tweaked as well.
