I have a million clothes in mine which I do not wear/some don't fit anymore and I want to get rid of them and have new stuff only.
Can anyone help/suggest what I would need please
Thanks

Thanks. I was thinking more in terms of how many pairs of trousers etc..

It depends on what you already gravitate towards @Softoprider as people could suggest things to you but they don’t fit with your personal style etc.

Softoprider · 19/05/2023 13:23

Well this is the thing. I have no clue ! I think this is the reason I end up with a wardrobe full of clothes that I do not wear because nothing really matches up !

I have about 10 dresses which I wear with sandals. Can dress up with jewellery or not. It's incredibly easy just chuck on and go.

IdentifyWithNotAs · 19/05/2023 13:26

Summer is the best - easy dresses and no mixing and matching to do. This is where I get unstuck for the rest of the year as all the layers I buy barely go together (it’s not about colour choices it’s how fabric weights coordinate)

no answers for the OP just relating!

IdentifyWithNotAs · 19/05/2023 13:27

I also have about ten dresses plus some skirts and vest tops. I feel like that’s still too many really. I always end up rewearing the same small handful

worktired · 19/05/2023 13:34

I feel the same OP.

I think the first thing to do is pick 3 colours that you like to wear and go together, eg navy, white, red.

Then I'd have clothes in a mix of these colours, eg

  • wide leg linen trousers in each of the 3 colours (or combination such as navy/white stripe)
  • 5 tops in a combination of the different colours in different styles
  • 3 dresses in these colours
  • 3 shorts/skirts as above
  • jacket/cardigan/beach cover up as above
  • sandals/trainers/bag to match

Does that help?

Softoprider · 19/05/2023 14:25

Yes it does ! I think I get attracted to clothes and buy an item because of the colour and then when I get home realise I have nothing to wear with it ! Or at least nothing that fits and isn't under ten years old ..lol So @worktired are you going to follow your own advice and do this? I am going to attempt to do something about it this weekend and that is the easy part. The hard part will be getting rid of old clothes I am sentimentally attached to :)

I currently have 3 mini capsules (which is defeating the purpose a bit!) of black/white, navy/white & brown/khaki.

I'm going to trial them over the next month & see which one(s) I wear the most Smile

bluesky45 · 19/05/2023 14:40

For me:
Around 4 trousers - 1 pair of blue jeans, 1 pair of navy chinos, 1 pair of khaki trousers of some description, 1 pair of lightweight patterned trousers
Around 2 pairs of shorts - 1 pair of denim shorts, 1 pair of navy chinos type shorts
Around 5-7 tops/t-shirts in shades of white, blue, navy, blush pink. Plain or simple patterns such as stripes.
A couple of long sleeved tops, usually Breton striped, I like fat face ones.
Around 3-4 dresses, usually white and navy based, floral patterns or stripes or plain
1 playsuit for hanging around at home/beach on hot days
1 pair of white trainers, 1 pair of tan sandals, 1 pair of navy flip flops
1 straw hat
1 really good pair of sunglasses
And a few swimsuits, navy or black for holidays.
And 1 dressy, strappy top, for me it's in, you guessed it, navy!

So, a palette of mainly navy, blue, white and pink. Mostly plain with some stripes and florals. Accessories that go with everything. Tops and bottoms that mostly match with each other. Simple styles and colours that don't really go in and out of fashion.

Last summer I lived out of a suitcase. I took:

one workout outfit
hiking shorts
relaxing shorts
2 vests
a striped tshirt
A long sleeved loose tshirt
short PJs
2 summer/smart beach dresses (one black one patterned)
jumpsuit to dress up or down
a denim jacket
a cap and sunglasses
a swimsuit
a beach bag
a bum bag
a backpack (hiking type)
birkenstocks
gold sandals
hiking trainers

Happiest I’ve ever been with my clothing choices!

I'd love to create a capsule wardrobe too! Saves from owning too many clothes that I don't end up wearing, also in storage space too. And from spending too long trying to decide what to wear Grin

I really like packing to go away - feeling that's all I've got and it's so easy!

So I'd choose a three tone palette - I often have black, turquoise and teal, or black, grey and white, or autumn tones rust, olive, brown, which is hard to do in summer! And bag and shades to tone.

Starting with your own colours can work too - taking your hair, eye and skin tone as your basic pallette. Mine's mid brown, teal, cream.

I like a kind of ancient Greek/Roman look - I love the women's costumes on Plebs. Usually an ankle length dress, flat sandals and important earrings/necklace.

And scarves. Very big and very thin, as Trinny says, because you can wrap and tie them into tops, jackets, wraps, skirts - brilliant.

Then sandals in gold/bronze, silver/pewter, brown/tan to go with the chosen pallette.
