Who has to deal with a moustache - and how do you do it????

Milliways · 19/02/2008 12:51

Have decided that my moustache can no longer be ignored. (I have pale skin & v. dark hair which is now growing in unwanted top lip places!)

SO....

do I shave it (stubble?), wax it? (do you get ingrown hairs?), bleach it? pretend it's normal??

What do you lot do? And once I start, how often will I have to re-do whatever I do????

Yours hairily

Milli

I use hot wax, the one where you peel off the wax itself (no strips). It really is the best and I've tried everything. You don't get ingrowing hairs, at least I never do on my face, probably because it is scrubbed and exfoliated quite frequently. Sometimes I pluck the odd hair out with tweezers.

Please don't shave, it really does grow back horrible (I once had a friend who used to shave her sideburns and they became quite masculine after a while)

Lubyloo · 19/02/2008 12:55

I do a combination of waxing, epilator and tweezers for the rogue ones. I haven't had any problems with ingrowing hairs. However I have just enquired this morning about laser treatment and I'm waiting for them to send me the details through. I'm very excited at the prospect that I might get rid of them for good!

Milliways · 19/02/2008 12:56

Thank you!

How long does waxing last for?

WowOoo · 19/02/2008 12:56

Just bleach mine with jolen. Don't think i can notice it when bleached.

MrsRecycle · 19/02/2008 12:57

threading OUCHHHHHH. I did have electrolysis as well and that hurt just as much.

Milliways · 19/02/2008 12:58

Luby - is epilating v.painful?

Do you get left with red marks?

Waxing lasts for about a month, as long as the hairs are all there when you wax for the first time, IYSWIM. There is some in between regrowth but usually only a few you can tweeze out.

I used to bleach too, but stopped when someone pointed out my lovely bushy blonde moustache shone in the sunlight. And I'd been convinced it was invisible up till then. You can only bleach if you have very fine hairs imo.

Milliways · 19/02/2008 13:03

I was worried about bleach for the same reason - thought it may be noticeable as I am sooo not blonde!

Bluestocking · 19/02/2008 13:03

Lasering is great, but only if the hair is dark. I have had my upper lip and chin done which has got rid of the dark hairs but I now need to have the blond ones removed by electrolysis - if I can be bothered! I had mine done at the local SK:N clinic.

pukkapatch · 19/02/2008 13:05

thread it. need to do about once a week at least in the summer. can get away with being lazier in the winter. but since i can thread it myself, i can do it quite easily ever y week.

TigerFeet · 19/02/2008 13:05

I never thought my tache was all that bad until I saw it in that awful winter light that shows everything

Freddie Mercury would be proud

Off for waxing on Saturday

BITCAT · 19/02/2008 13:06

I have very dark hair, almost black and it's very thick. Have to shave legs every other day!! I use removal cream but be careful what you use as i have found a few that i am allergic to!! I agree bleaching can only work if you have fine hairs. I use wax 4 eyebrows and bikini line!!

MAMAZON · 19/02/2008 13:06

i wax too.

When i was an early teen i tried shaving it as i had a date. couple of days later i kissed the boy and he pulled away as my "stubble" scratched him.
i was mortified

Brangelina · 19/02/2008 13:07

How do you thread Pukka? Do you need special thread? Is it easy? I've never seen it done but am very intrigued.

MrsMattie · 19/02/2008 13:07

I have fair skin and dark hair, so also suffer the 'tache problem. I get it waxed. Cheap, quick, lasts about a month,.

TigerFeet · 19/02/2008 13:08

I'd be interested in hearing about the threading too. I have a friend who gets her eyebrows threaded. I nod and smile and pretend I know what she's on about

What it it? How does it work? How do you do it yourself?

allgonebellyup · 19/02/2008 13:09

cant you just use a sensitive hair removing cream?

chocolateshoes · 19/02/2008 13:11

I have always bleached but am off to inspect myself in a number of different sunny mirrors!!

BITCAT · 19/02/2008 13:13

I've tried the sensitive removal creams and i still ended up with very sore red skin, so it was trial and error with me to find the right one, it's a certain chemical which i can't remember the name that was causing the problems. We checked the ingredients on the ones that made me sore and same thing in all of them!!

pukkapatch · 19/02/2008 13:13

take a roll of ordinary thread, i think its called a spool? i am right handed, so, on my left middle finger, wrap it round a few times so the end stays there. then keeping the spool in your left hand, let out about a foot or so of thread into your right hand. twist this round and round a few times so you havea twisty bitin the middle, andare holdingit in your right and left hands. now, with right hand, move fingers up and down, so you get a scissory action. the twisted bit in the middle will pluck out the hairs by wrapping round itself and pulling them out.
you can get really tiny hairs, too small for tweezers out. but needs practice. and can bee painful if not done expertly. keep skin taught by sticking tongue under it to minimise pain. i'm sure there is something on youtube somewhee

Milliways · 19/02/2008 13:20

Sounds painful!

OP posts:
MAMAZON · 19/02/2008 13:23

I find Threading in general is less painfull than tweezing asn you can get much finer hairs out so it gives a much cleaner finish.

But i have never been able to do it myself....can't get the action right.

I used to get my whole face done back in london but there is no one that does it where i am now....its a pain as i hate waxing - im such a whimp at ulling the strips off.

Oblomov · 19/02/2008 13:55

Mine glisten in the sun apparently. I have been having electrolysis for years on my chin. Since pregnancy I do seem to be very 'downey' and really want a complete face wax, very cheaply, not very often. Thus, I shall give up now ! because I don't think that is available !!!
I have had a bit of electrolysis on my lip. It was so painful, I think my chin is immune to the pain. And I had a wax. At a salon and came up in big bumps.Laser is no good, as my hairs aren't that dark.
Am fed up with it all now.

digitalgirl · 19/02/2008 14:12

had mine done with the light pulse treatment (sort of lasering). got rid of most of it, but there are some hairs that were too fine to be zapped, and too sparse to warrant bleaching the whole area so I just shave them every 2-3 weeks. probably don't need to, but years of being self-conscious about that area means I notice every little hair. they don't grow back thick and stubbly either.
am now pg, so waiting to if the hormones switch on the 'full on beard' follicles.

Lubyloo · 19/02/2008 21:46

Milli - I don't find epilating painful but think I may be odd. I have recommended epilation to friends and they have spent money on epilators and only used them a couple of times. I epilate legs, bikini line and armpits (as well as chin and tache ) and find it great. The more you use it the less sensitive you become to it. It does make the area red but only for an hour or two. I find waxing makes it redder.
