Who has to deal with a moustache - and how do you do it????

Milliways · 19/02/2008 12:51

Have decided that my moustache can no longer be ignored. (I have pale skin & v. dark hair which is now growing in unwanted top lip places!)

SO....

do I shave it (stubble?), wax it? (do you get ingrown hairs?), bleach it? pretend it's normal??

What do you lot do? And once I start, how often will I have to re-do whatever I do????

Yours hairily

Milli

If you can find somewhere to get it done, threading is preferable to waxing ime because waxing turns all your skin red for hours.

SSSandy2 · 19/02/2008 21:59

I found threading TOO painful

Remotew · 19/02/2008 22:01

I've got downy blonde hair on my face. I get a magnifying mirror and pluck out the dark ones.

In the bright winter sunlight, someone mentioned this further down I hadnt noticed the winter thing, it is cringingly visible but I would rather live with that for fear of making a worse facial hair problem.

Wouldnt you think they could come up with something to really get rid of unwanted hair by now.

twospecialgirls · 19/02/2008 22:02

i wax mine ( well pay someone to ) didnt know i had one till dp said last month y didnt i get rid of it when i got my eye brows done could have wacked him !!any how looked very closly in the mirror and he was correct i had an extra eyebrow on my lip so it had to go !!

jennifersofia · 19/02/2008 22:08

I thought you meant dp's! I told mine no kissing until he shaved it, for the record...

smileboo · 19/02/2008 22:09

After deciding that enough was enough I bit the hairy bullet and went to get my tache waxed. I was informed that my hairs were too 'fluffy' to warrent waxing so it was recommended that I opt for light laser treatment.

Anyway, I do intend to do this when I have the funds available, until then I'll continue with being a Magnum P.I lookalike.

Like you Milli I have very fair skin and dark hair which results in a far more obvious hairy lip in winter

nutcracker · 19/02/2008 22:13

For those of you that find the cream too harsh, I always put a layer of vasaline on my top lip first and then the hair cream, it works really well.

I am having my eyebrows threaded on Friday and i'm going to ask what they'd reccomend for my tash as it seems to grow at an alarming rate LOL.

NaughtyNigel · 19/02/2008 22:23

if you use cream does it groe back stubbly? or as it was?
i'm interested but scared of replacing fine, blond 'tach with big black one -

MicrowaveOnly · 19/02/2008 22:42

ooh couple of Qs

to waxers pleese explain, don't you have to grow hairs first, before it can be waxed..so doesn't it show too much for a couple of days?

and electrolysis...how many sessions does it take?

Milliways · 23/02/2008 18:23

All done

Veet Wax strips (get 12 in a box). Just used one - very quick (more sticky than the eyebrow wax strips I get) and not very painful. Smarting stopped after a few minutes and not very red, so if it lasts & doesn't grow back worse I will be a happy, moustache free, Milli

I have mine professionally waxed. It is the most painful area for me to have waxed but small too so over quickly.
I have had a course of IPL but it didn't work properly. I go every 4-5 weeks and it is def getting a bit finer. I pluck any big thick ones that might spring through and try to avoid mirrors in sunlight when I know a wax is due . (It is the mirror in the car that is the worst)

VanillaPumpkin · 23/02/2008 18:36

It won't grow back worse.

tearinghairout · 23/02/2008 18:38

Quick go witha disposible razor in the shower every so often. After a while they get sparser, I don't have to do it so often now. Be careful though, don't want tell-tale nicks!

VanillaPumpkin · 23/02/2008 18:53

Noooooo, never shave it !!!!

Milliways · 23/02/2008 18:58

I am sat here stroking hairless top lip

Hi

Just wanted to join in this discussion as I wondered if anyone else has the same odd little problem as me.

I have the usual dark hair tache problem and I find waxing is the best way to get rid of it.......BUT the problem I find is that I am then left with a strip of skin above my lip which is whiter than the rest of my face! Kind of like the wax has taken off the top few skin cells.
It's especially bad in summer when I get a tan and then wax a strip of it off!

Am I the only one?!?!?!?!

tearinghairout · 23/02/2008 19:45

Vanilla - why not? I've done it for ages & it's fine. You don't even have to wait for it to be visible, as long as the razor is sharp. I've never had a problem with shaving it. I swear I don't need to do it so often now. I don't WANT to shave it, but if it works...?

VanillaPumpkin · 23/02/2008 20:05

The stubble! I find if I shave my legs the hair grows back hard as it has a blunt edge. My waxed lip hair grows back soft as it is new root growth.

tearinghairout · 23/02/2008 20:40

I shave the stubble before it becomes visible. I have dark hair but I find I'm not going round like Desperate Dan with lots of black spots of stubble, thankfully. Shaving works for me I find it quick, cheap & effective.

The only problem I ever had was when I attacked my leg once without too much care & scraped a load of skin off & had blood pouring down & a big scar - I'm more careful with top lip!

fishie · 23/02/2008 20:45

jackanory i have opposite problem, upper lip goes darker in sun.

i can't use any wax or cream at all, get a big old rash which is worse than any hairs. i tweeze, it is fine so long as you do it about twice a week only takes a few mins.

hifi · 23/02/2008 20:47

have beard and tash, takes about half hour every evening to keep under control, gets me down sometimes. be very interested to know how lon , how much did the laser cost bluestocking? have they grown back?

charliecat · 23/02/2008 20:51

I waxed my tash after reding this. Couldnt go out for 3 hours. Had red sting marks. 3 days later still red AND there are monster hairs it didnt catch.

meglet · 23/02/2008 20:54

jackanory Boots own facial hair waxing strips are very good. But do it before bedtime on clean skin after washing your face. it grabs the hair better that way. I'm pretty hairy but only do this every other week as it does work, bit of bleaching when I can be bothered.

VanillaPumpkin · 23/02/2008 21:03

Charlie - That is why I pay a professional. It isn't that expensive tbh. I have it done in the evening though as I do go very red (but do plucking my eyebrows too) and all is normal in the morning.
Hifi - Poor you. I had IPL (laser treatment) and it is expensive. It also didn't work entirely for me and doesn't last forever. However the darker/thicker the hair the better and more impressive the result. It didn't hurt as I was given an ice pack to numb the skin before the pulse. Although I am not hair free the IPL did make my growth finer and slower. I had it on my bikini line too and noticed a difference there too.
Tearinghair - My growth must be a lot quicker than yours .

poppynic · 23/02/2008 21:05

Just a warning to people thinking of waxing. Don't try it for the first time before an important event! My "oh soooo ex" boyfriend decided he would like to wax my mo!!! Naively I let him... I came up with pimple-like spots all over the area which lasted for about a week!. The up-side was he decided to forget the whole thing from then on and I have remained happily hairy ever since. Although - now I'm (only just) over 40 - things are beginning to look a little bit worse and I'm watching this thread with interest.
