Muslim convert, English wedding. Dress needed.

Twilightimmortal · 19/05/2023 08:52

I'm a Muslim convert and my sister is getting married.

I dont want to stand out and wear what I would normally wear to a Muslim wedding but I'm looking for something that would cover me and still be wedding appropriate.

My sisters theme is dusty pink and I'm looking for something long sleeved and flowy.

Please help

Hi - I don’t want to derail your thread and hunt for a dress. But I was wondering if you would consider doing an AMA on being a Muslim convert.

To be clear: I have no agenda what so ever - but it’s clear even from the few comments here that there’s a lot you’re navigating and I, for one, would like to understand more and to respectfully learn more about it all.

hope it’s ok to say that.

Also don't feel like you can't wear a hijab/turban and also wedding hat or fascinator! A friend of mine wore the most amazing hat to a friends' wedding with a chiffon hijab underneath.

Surely that's the bride?

Xiaoxiong · 21/05/2023 17:18

@JoanThursday1972 yes the second picture is a bride but I was using it as an example of what a hat or fascinator over a hijab might look like. Make it any other colour than white and that would be lovely for a hijabi going to an English wedding.

Neverhappyalwayshopeful · 21/05/2023 20:34

I'm muslim and I would totally recommend the dresses on asos. Monsoon and phase eight also often have some great options! X

Dressydress · 22/05/2023 13:52

Also long tall Sally

I love aab but too pricey for me.
I use modanisa and sefa merve online a lot

Also Urban culture online. Based in Australia but ship to the UK same sizing as UK!

Susurrar · 22/05/2023 16:44

I love the pink flowy dress with embroidered sleeves (from aab) which was linked to on this thread.
Please excuse my ignorance, would it be offensive/inappropriate if someone who is not Muslim wore it to a Muslim wedding?
Don’t mean to hijack the thread!!

Laptp · 22/05/2023 17:51

@Susurrar not at all! Clothes are clothes 😊. My non-Muslim/Asian mates wore outfits from my culture at my wedding as a surprise gesture and they looked absolutely stunning in them 😍.

I liked that one too but I think it was sold out in my size :-(

Or just wear a really beautiful hijab. Our local uni has a high percentage of muslim students and the scarves the girls wear are so beautiful - colourful beaded and embroidered - real head turners.

Salam, that website is beautiful 😍
I'm still looking, I really like the boohoo one so looking for similar ones to that, the arms seem like they are see through, plus I want to have a few that I really like to pick from.

There are quite a few already :) I did one

Twilightimmortal · 02/06/2023 09:59

I havent bought a dress yet but the dress that Kate wore yesterday is exactly the kind of dress I want.

It looks very similar to the Boohoo one aswell.

That dress was beautiful and so appropriate!

TimesRwo · 02/06/2023 14:10

If the Boohoo one isn’t nice, go to Fonthill Road in Finsbury Park. It’s shop after shop
of evening dresses and you will definitely find some suitable for a headscarf.

Lol I was thinking of your thread when I saw Kate's dress! I know this won't help you but I've seen similar stuff in Istanbul and also ME countries like Dubai. Didn't take note of the store names though otherwise I could have done a web search to see if they sell online too. There are a few UK based instagram people who sell outfits from Dubai but again didn't take note of their names (sorry!) 😬.

Have a look at some of the dresses worn to the wedding of the Crown Prince of Jordan's wedding for inspiration.

They might be a bit black tie/evening for a traditional British wedding but some good ideas about shapes, you just need less bling.

Having said that I wouldn't object to a guest wearing traditional dress, at my wedding I had a guest in a sari, she's a fairly liberal Muslim so no head covering and her lower arms were showing but it would have been fine if she'd worn salwar kameeze and headscarf too.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 02/06/2023 16:07

My Muslim or Hindi friends shop anywhere from ASOS, Needle and Thread, monsoon, Oliver Bonas, Zara - basically as long as it’s long enough in sleeves and length they’ll wear it. Quite a few like the lace or other details at neck etc area, again as long as it’s modest enough they’re fine with it. Although some like the traditional dress shops in their areas, some of them find the clothes either not their taste or old fashioned.

Ghost dresses are expensive but nice too.

They are often quite clingy though as most are bias cut and satin, not ideal for a ‘modest’ brief.
