Anyone from Italy?

Bit of a long shot.
I am looking to buy a gift for my godmothers milestone birthday.
She lives in Italy and has done for the past 30+ years and I am quite conscious of the fact that the brands, style and fashion are quite different that here in the UK.

I know she likes a big brand name for special occasions, she gifted me a pair of Versace earrings for my milestone birthday a few years ago.
We are going to visit her soon and I would like to buy her something nice, I don't exactly have the budget for big names but around 200-250 is what I can stretch to.

Would anyone here be able to recommend a brand worth looking up?

Are you looking for Italian labels, or for a brand that's seen as quintessentially British that would be known in Italy?

sparklins · 18/05/2023 15:53

@Floisme most likely Italian labels. Or labels very popular in Italy.
Sounds shallow without me meaning it that way but I know she would like to be able to wear something her friends/family would recognize if that makes sense.

This would use up all your budget

Although personally I’d rather have a small selection of their beauty products, some of which are in neutral colours. Totally lovely.

It’s a bit of an awkward amount - too much, really, for cosmetics, but not quite enough for a silk scarf or the nicer pieces of costume jewellery. There’s this:

Not sure how exciting anyone might find it …

(Have suddenly forgotten any other Italian brands on my radar!)

Oh, how about some Santa Maria Novella stuff - though I can’t be certain it wouldn’t be seen as touristy by Italians. Everything is impeccably gorgeous.

Were the Versace earrings bought with your taste or hers in mind? If the latter similar brands to think of are Cavalli and Dolce and Gabanna. Gucci and Fendi, maybe. Only trouble is these brands are far more expensive in pounds than euros so your budget really won't stretch beyond things like key chains and card holders.

Burberry is well liked there though, especially the more obvious check stuff that's on the showier side. If you're near a factory outlet you can probably get more for your money and the showier styles are less popular in the UK so there should be some choice of things.

(Hmm tableware …)

Are you sure you’re not mis-characterising your godmother, @sparklins ? Would she really not rather have something recognisably British - from Fortnum & Mason, or William Yeoward, say?

botemp · 18/05/2023 17:45

(I used to insist the table was wearing a skirt whenever there was a tablecloth on it CountryCousin, so it sort of works...)

Liberty could also make a nice British gift, bit more obscure but lovely regardless, Johnstons of Elgin, the Italians do appreciate Scottish cashmere but it's a bit less obvious.

What about Paul Smith - his inner Italian wrapped in Britishness (serious suit tailoring). Or Vivienne Westwood. Both have scarves, purses etc…

FelicityFlops · 18/05/2023 18:07

I would look at getting her something beautiful from Dartington Glass.

A leather accessory from Mulberry or Aspinal would be recognizably British, but be careful, Mulberry now manufactures a lot in China.
What about a really nice umbrella? I don’t know any brands but it would be a fun nod to the British weather.

Piquadro is a brand that makes upmarket leather products. I bought my husband a Piquadro rucksack for a milestone birthday and it is such good quality. The room smelled of leather for hours after he first opened it. His rucksack cost around €400 but I think they do smaller bags etc.
