Not wearing a bra?

Basically I hate wearing bras, yes I've got properly fitted ones, I can wear them and do when necessary but I hate them.

I have small boobs and don't particularly need support unless running or serious exercise, I can get away with no bra most of the time which is fine in winter when I'm wearing layers but in summer I worry about thin tops and my nipples showing. That's not ok is it? I actually have quite flat nipples so it's not like comically obvious but I feel self conscious even about the little pebbles. When is it ok to not wear a bra please Mumsnet?

I stopped wearing bras and I feel amazing my breast are on the larger side I do wear vest or tank tops underneath my tops though

pecantoucan · 15/05/2023 09:20

They are just nipples. Men don't care. Who cares if they show through a bit.

marbl · 15/05/2023 09:32

Well this is refreshing, I'm so pleased by the first two responses! I don't care what men think really, other than my husband I guess (and he's never mentioned it). I'm not hugely attractive and can't imagine other men are interested/notice really; I'm actually more worried about other women noticing and judging me so would be delighted if the general consensus is to go for it!!

People probably won't even notice.
I wish I could get away with it.

Sometherusername · 15/05/2023 09:36

Honestly I wouldn't do it at work* as rightly or wrongly you may well be judged.

Out and about though I think it's fine.

*Depending on what your work is, obvs. If it's a professional office type environment or you have teenage students then definitely not, if you work somewhere more relaxed then maybe it's ok.

Mabelface · 15/05/2023 09:43

Meh, who cares what others think? Wear what you want. If I could get away without needing a bra, I'd do it! Unfortunately, I am large of nork, so need to make sure I don't trip over then. 😉

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 15/05/2023 09:44

I certainly wouldn’t judge. I hate wearing a bra too and don’t at home, but I must admit that I don’t feel comfortable being in public without one for reasons I think may be similar to the OP. Please OP, lead the way, normalise not wearing a bra for those of us who feel more comfortable without one.

Superdupes · 15/05/2023 09:45

I'm the same and never wear a bra in my free time. For work I wear a bralette from Primark, much more comfortable than a bra IMO and far cheaper! I'll never wear a bra again now.

Littlesprouts · 15/05/2023 09:54

Never ever felt I was in the right size bra and would have no idea what size I am now. Switched to stretchy M&S crop tops ages ago, and they do the trick nicely (they have a removable insert that keeps nips hidden away, and I only ever have to grab my dress size rather than faffing around with cups - a win!).

Polis · 15/05/2023 10:02

I don’t like having the straps showing so I quite often don’t wear one in the summer. Exercise aside, I don’t have any particular rules as to when and where I do or don’t. Work, church, shopping, visiting elderly relatives, whatever.

StarlightLady · 15/05/2023 10:57

Bras are an optional item of clothing. To some they provide comfort, to others they don't. I wear bras most of the time. I'm a 36F but I don't wear one when the weather is really warm. I get hot enough without elastic round my back and chest. If a nipple outline shows, we all have them.

RuffledKestrel · 15/05/2023 10:58

I absolutely hate the things too. I'd happily go bra free all the time if I could, unfortunately, mine are on the larger size so I get sore if I let them "swing free" too much.

I'm with you on the nips thing. I personally see no problem with them showing, don't see what the fuss is about. Yet at the same time I get very conscious of mine showing 😅 It's stupid, I know it, but I can't seem to shift the feeling.
So if I'm going braless I tend to wear tank top/crop top with a thin pad in it (many have this now). Or slap some nipple pasties on.

ColonelSpondleClagnut · 15/05/2023 11:01

I don't usually wear one - small of nork, but the floppy dangly kind so I'll usually wear a cami or vest top to stop them swinging around so much. That's for comfort reasons though rather than what anyone else thinks.

StarlightLady · 15/05/2023 11:14

To add to my previous comments app thread, I've often wondered if going braless was the norm, and then we were faced with this new fangled invention to support the boobs, what the reaction would be. But I digress.

BlameItOnTheGoose · 15/05/2023 11:18

I also have really small boobs and never wear a bra at home (or on the school run!) but for those times when I want a bit of support I go for my Sloggi bralet. So comfy, no wires or seams.

TheChosenTwo · 15/05/2023 11:20

I always wear a bra, hate not wearing one as my boobs are saggy and flappy without one!
it’s just what you’re comfortable with, I can’t comprehend how it’s more comfortable without one - I even sleep in mine!!

This.

I go braless even in v-neck tops. I leaned forward to pick up my handbag off the floor at a restaurant and DP said “just saw your nips”. We laughed because… so what? Everyone has them.

I do have tiny tits though, so it’s never going to be an erotic display when I momentarily flash them.

LittleWhiteMoth · 19/05/2023 16:29

I too stopped wearing bras years ago, could never go back!

I am a small B and fairly slim so tend to just wear a soft fitted vest or cami underneath or if wearing a thicker top, nothing unless i need a thermal layer.

With tighter fitting tops such as a thin summer cami I might wear a bandeau for 'privacy' but that's it. It's such a wonderful feeling isn't it? I was recently reading a US forum discussing this very subject and it is very popular amongst younger women, too. If you are worried about exposure or jiggle then there are some great little solutions on the market so def have a look!

TheOGCCL · 19/05/2023 18:22

The body positive movement means a lot fewer women are wearing bras now. I think this will continue as a trend. I can't envisage a bra being uncomfortable, I hate taking mine off at night (transfer to a sleep bra)!

PurplePineapple1 · 21/05/2023 21:20

I stopped wearing bras about 2 weeks ago. They're uncomfortable. They annoy me. I'm fat and have big melons but I really don't care. They're just tits and they're my tits and I want to be comfortable so I just stopped! Nobody has fainted or crashed their car at the sight of a woman not wearing a bra, yet.

Summerdayy · 20/08/2023 14:04

I don’t wear bra for good 13 years. I also have small breasts ( can fit them in my palm) so no point really.
But I have a very judgy friend, who usually says: again not wearing bra?
and she tuts, mind you she has large boobs.
I also wear always vest under t shirts or tops so not like I’m naked or showing anything..
But people can be judging around. Even my MIL stares at my boobs and again she has a massive huge boobs..

JacobKrisMyLoadAndXavier · 20/08/2023 14:49

I don't like seeing women's nipples in any context other than breastfeeding. I think it's wishful delusions to think they are 'just nipples'. People should dress modestly and appropriately in public IMO.

I don't want to be flashed a bum crack even though everyone has one 🙄 what a silly argument. Bending over and showing your nipples even if done innocently could give the impression you intended to flash others.

There are soft comfortable bralets these days or just wear things that covers you up properly.

(Straight) men will absolutely notice. Some will forget about it, some will keep it in the mental bank, some will be idiots about it. But they will notice.

StarlightLady · 20/08/2023 15:41

@JacobKrisMyLoadAndXavier - It's funny how terms such as "modestly" are often only used when describing women. If a women chooses not to wear a bra or bralets it will not scar anyone of either gender for life.

It's warm today, no work (it's Sunday) and I'm proudly braless. The girls deserve some free range time.

AllTheChaos · 20/08/2023 15:53

I always wore a bra when I was (very) fat, as it was more comfortable. I had great norks then, mind 😊 Since losing the weight I am essentially boobless, and see absolutely no point in wearing one unless I need some padding to make an outfit look right.
