Which dress for ‘posh’ do?

LivesInPyjamas · 14/05/2023 22:08

Do any of these work for a ‘posh’ do? Not black tie, I’ve been told ‘wedding type attire’.

I’ve lost my sense of style since gaining a lot of weight (although have lost a couple of stone in the last few months) plus approaching 40 so not sure any of these suit me?

Apologies for the bad photos, I will be wearing better underwear on the day 😆 All the dresses are just below knee length. I’m not used to wearing patterns so unsure of the flowery one. My favourite is the navy dress but it’s too short in the body and arms unfortunately. Think maybe the khaki dress is too casual? The event is Wednesday so will have to dash to the shops tomorrow if none work. What do you think?

I think the navy one is a very bad fit at the bust. The floral one is fine. The khaki one needs statement shoes, hair and maybe some amazing earrings.

SurpriseSparDay · 14/05/2023 23:40

I think only the plain navy is close to formal enough - however, from the photos I’d say you suit a V neckline much more than a high, round neckline. Two of those dresses have elasticated waistlines - rather casual looking and not the most flattering design.

If I were shopping with you I’d encourage you to look for much sharper shapes and clear, bright colours - particularly as we’re in Spring. Fabric also elevates something - look for silk, or something that resembles it.

Splash out anyway. You can always sell it on when you lose weight, or get it tailored to fit.

SurpriseSparDay · 14/05/2023 23:56

These seem to be the best on the M&S site.

Just as a general idea. They may not suit your tastes or preferred budget.

LivesInPyjamas · 15/05/2023 00:03

@SurpriseSparDay, I really like the checked dress. Thanks for the suggestions. We have an m&s here so I will have a look tomorrow.

Is the floral dress from the brand apricot? If it is then I have the same shape/style of dress in a more pretty pattern, if you like that style on you.

green dress

I like the look (and price) of this. Not sure what the quality will be like though.

That Boohoo dress pops up a lot- it's very smart and looks more expensive than it is .

I don’t want to spend too much as I’m still hoping to drop another dress size or two.

These are in my online basket - any that might work?

The third one is nice and could fit at a push. The dipped hem ones are awful, sorry.

Completely off the point but surely that second dress is black and not khaki?

@user4750, I think it’s the lighting and also my room is painted dark green so that might be why it looks black. Here’s a pic of the dress on the website:

@TulipTuesday, that’s a lovely dress but I’m after something with longer sleeves as I don’t like my arms.

@BranchGold, I really like that dress but it has short sleeves and I’m looking for 3/4 sleeves or long sleeves

I agree that they're the sort of thing i'd wear to work. The Navy new look one is nice and more formal occassion.

jackstini · 15/05/2023 12:42

I like the first 2 New Look ones, not the floral one

The BooHoo one is nice too

These from Next you could get next day delivery and only £12 - £21

I had a friends like these ones the material was awful and unflattering so it went straight back. It looked cheap. Which is fair enough as it is cheap but other cheap dresses manage to look more expensive.

Oblomov23 · 15/05/2023 13:15

How are you getting on. You need something much more glam for a 'posh' do. The 3 original ones are totally unsuitable, far too daywear, and ever so slightly drab I'm afraid. Are you nearer to finding something?

Pacques · 15/05/2023 13:36

Personally, I'm still liking the original navy best out of all the alternatives.
But yes- needs a bra that will hoick you up- and then the seam will sit in the right place. i think it looks smart but it's still fluid - some others are a bit Mother of the Bride imho.

HappiDaze · 15/05/2023 13:37

Definitely the Navy one

LivesInPyjamas · 15/05/2023 14:40

I’ve just tried it on again with proper underwear and it does look to fit better. I don’t think it’s a ‘wow’ dress though and I think I could probably find something better but I’m running out of time.

user4750 · 15/05/2023 14:48

Sorry OP I still think it does nothing for you at all. It's very very dowdy and the arms make it look cheap.

RitaCrudgington · 15/05/2023 14:55

I think if you don't like dressy dresses, and you're mid-weight loss and reluctant to spend more, then the navy dress with the new bra and a cheap but attractive statement necklace will be fine. No one's going to be gasping "What a stunning look!" but no one will be whispering "look at the state of her!" either.

I love your hair. Go big on the hair and makeup and you'll be OK. Not great, but OK.

Out of all of the ones where the image was posted, the checked dress again is more on the casual side of things.

The Quiz marbled one is gorgeous as is M&S Midaxi dress that is the broiderie black & white one.
