Trousers that won’t make me look dumpy?

I’m 5ft, and weigh about 8st10lbs. I’ve got slim legs and a waist. But long dresses / midi dresses / loose ish trousers make me look dumpy.

Shorts and short skirts have always looked best, but obviously I don’t wear these things year round (or short skirts at all anymore - i’m in my early forties).

Leggings also suit me, but I don’t like the style of them and never know what to wear on top.

Skinny jeans are uncomfortable!

So please help! What trousers will make me look stylish but not dumpy?!

I would still wear short skirts in 40s with tights in winter..not super short but above the knee.
Can you take some time say in M& S trying on jeans of various shapes seeing which you prefer until you are happy with a pair. I would think a narrower fit...one stage up from skinnies.
Also l presume you shop in petite for dresses / tops etc

I wear those stretchy trousers with elastane, they're polyester which I hate but they're the only sort of trousers which suit me. I cant have anything baggy or loose around the bum and legs or I look even fatter than I am, also cant stand jeggings as they fall down and are too tight. The material has to be thick enough to hide my cellulite but not too thick.... the list of my requirements goes on and on

Apologies OP to high jack .I'm no good at fashion advice I'm afraid .But my suggestion would be cropped cotton leggings with a tunic or mini dress .

The latest ones I have bought were from Ideal World

But I notice they have some others called 'bengaline' I think that is a similar material, usually made up of viscose, polyester, elastane, that sort of thing

I also found some in Roman which are ok

The problem for me is they are all too long but thats the type I look for.

There are also some in Matalan which Ive bought, Et Vous is the name of the brand, they have a gold button on the waist and a little cut in on the ankle. They are anice length for me, my inside leg is 28 but I prefer to wear a 26 or 27 inch leg

Wide legged trousers that are fitted on the waist/bum area https://www.boden.co.uk/en-gb/highbury-linen-trousers-white/sty-r0266-whi

Or cropped. I think if you're small the key is to have them fitted around the waist to top of leg area. So boot cut but tight on top of legs and then flare.

rileynexttime · 15/05/2023 08:49

Oh wow thank you so much @bellac11 ,that's so helpful!

I just love the word "bengaline" ! I think the fabric has a bit more weight than your usual stretchy stuff and doesn't crease .

I'm off to scour that Ideal World site .So lovely to have a recommendation that it is in my price range !

Bootleg trousers and tunic top.

ThoseDamnCrows · 15/05/2023 09:24

I like Boden Hampshire trousers, they're meant to be a 7/8 length but because I'm short they're actually an 8/8 length on me. I really struggle to buy flattering trousers as they're usually too loose round the bum and thigh area, but these are a good slim fit.
