Swim skirts

The dreaded search for swimwear for the summer commences. DD will be 16 when we go on holiday somewhere extremely hot. She is extremely self conscious about her body. She said she might consider something like this, but I can't work out if this item is all what she'd need to wear on the bottom, or will she also need swim briefs underneath. Also, does anyone know where I can get more of a selection of this kind of thing? Thanks!

Asos have lots

LubaLuca · 14/05/2023 10:10

I think these tend to be a garment to wear in addition to separate bikini bottoms or shorts.

It would make sense for there to be all-in-one variations, so I'd get her to do the boring searches around ASOS etc until she finds something she likes.

Swimwear 365 have a few. They also have some swim shorts by lascana which are nice, wash well and are very flattering.

ChrisPPancake · 14/05/2023 11:32

I think if that one had built in bikini bottom type thing then it would say in the description, but as pp said the Panache one definitely does.
Can you get to JL to have a look, if she likes the style of the one you linked to?

HildaSwan · 14/05/2023 12:46

@DayDreamsOfMaria I think this is one example of needing to see the garment before you buy it. Go to JL
Talk to sales people see if DD can hold it and feel the material in her hand.
Then decide.
Depending on where nearest store is, It might mean an expedition but I would think it necessary to reassure DD..

I don't know about the one you have linked, but this Panache swim skirt has an integrated bikini bottoms (I have it).
A swim skort I guess.
Joe Browns does some as well.

The John Lewis website isn't terribly good. I'm about 90% sure the one linked must have an integral bottom if only because what a faff dealing with 2 pieces of wet, clingy swimwear will be.

The one you linked to is much nicer anyway. I think a 16 year old girl would be happier in something that's a cool, black miniskirt than that , tbh, odd pattern.

Motherhubbardscupboard · 14/05/2023 12:51

I'd recommend sun protection shorts, decathlon have a good selection and they aren't tight. You wear them over your bikini bottom or swim.suit and they can go in the water. I see lots of young people wearing similar .

Swim skirts can be a bit annoying to wear. They tend to ride up or if they’re loose, they float around you in the pool.

Have you looked up women’s board shorts? It would give her some extra coverage on the beach and they’re a bit more modern than swim skirts. They’re designed for things like surfing but she could swim in them too. These Decathlon ones look good. https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/women-s-boardshorts-with-elastic-waistband-and-drawstring-tini-corail/_/R-p-179713?mc=8646513&c=PURPLE

Lands End have a large selection of swim skorts and shorts. They describe clearly when briefs are included or not.

Swim skirts do float up but the Panache one wouldn't.Panache

Those shorts need a swimsuit under them which seems a bit of a faff.

Good find.

Hardbackwriter · 14/05/2023 15:48

I might be being thick but I don't understand the point of that at all - it's so short that it doesn't cover up any more than a generously cut pair of bikini bottoms (and covers up loads less than board shorts would) but would clearly be much less practical to move about in?

SaturdayGiraffe · 14/05/2023 15:54

I’m the same and have found board shorts the best solution.

NicCageisnotNickCave · 14/05/2023 17:47

Knee length tropical board shorts over a swimsuit or bikini top with a matching or contrasting tone is a much cooler way for a teen to cover up a bit - the swim skirts are a bit elderly lady at the baths 😬

eg Carrie Bradshaw at the beach.

Would she wear shorts? Wondering if something like Tikiboo running shorts and matching sports bra would work for her. They're not designed to be swimwear but I have about a million pairs of the leggings in the same fabric and they dry super fast and I think would be really comfortable to swim in. They have loads of patterns, and I think plain ones if she would prefer that.

Apologies if any one else has checked but I was in John Lewis and the John Lewis swim skirt is just a skirt, so she v without need bikini bottoms , or something under it.

I like those!

Rash guards are another way to get a bit more coverage in a (plausibly deniable!) way that might appeal to a teen - can claim to be sunburn conscious rather than body-conscious:
