Do you really reapply spf every two hours?

Raspberrycoke · 11/05/2023 08:33

Be honest.

Even if you wear makeup? Do you take your whole face off every two hours and reapply?

I’ve started to wear spf every day after nearly 40 years of not bothering, but it almost feels a bit moot point if I’m not reapplying it. Fine if not wearing any makeup, but I do most days and don’t want to take it all off multiple times a day.

What do you do? Am I missing something?

No. I apply once in the morning, unless I'm directly out and about in the strong sunshine in which case I likely wouldn't be wearing make up. You can get stick and spray SPFs which you can apply over make up though.

MileEndMillenial · 11/05/2023 08:35

I try to but sometimes forget as I work from home but I guess it’s not too bad as I’m not constantly in the sun. If you’re wearing makeup you can use a spray on spf, there are loads around now. sheseido does a good one but it’s a bit pricy.

Wiennetta · 11/05/2023 08:37

I put on SPF in the morning under make up. Then depending on what I’m doing and when I’m going outside I’ll top up with this (there are similar sprays by other brands). If I’m out for the whole day in the summer I’ll take it with me. But usually for me I’m popping out for a couple of hours during the day so will just use it before I leave. You can also get ‘once a day’ sunscreens but I haven’t used one.

Of course, if I’m outside but I don’t wear foundation.

mynameiscalypso · 11/05/2023 08:56

If it's really sunny, I will reapply with a spray over my make up. I generally prefer to wear a hat though. I reapply liberally to arms etc.

pizzaHeart · 11/05/2023 08:58

I dont wear make up if it’s hot like on a holiday. Otherwise I put Soltan once underneath and then foundation with SPF all over, I usually top up the foundation and blusher after lunch.

LoobyDop · 11/05/2023 09:02

Only if I’m actually sunbathing. At home I just put it on the morning. There must be people making a lot of money out of all this competitive spf application.

doadeer · 11/05/2023 09:04

I put on in the morning and go out. Then I'm usually home for a couple of hours and I reapply when I go to pick my son up. In summer much more. I wear a tinted Spf and no foundation

TheChosenTwo · 11/05/2023 09:05

I reapply when I feel it’s necessary but then I rarely wear makeup and when I do it’s usually for an evening out when the sun isn’t even up!
I wfh but sit by a window so always put it on first thing and then early afternoon again if it’s particularly bright.
I never really got on with wearing makeup, I’m a face toucher but also I need to blow my nose sometimes - how do you do that when you wear foundation without rubbing it all off again?!

Sunnycornwallanddevon · 11/05/2023 09:08

That's really weird imagining anyone would take all their make up off and reapply every 2 hours or were you just being facetious?!

I put my factor 50 on, then make up on top. I figure all that will keep most of the harmful rays at bay. I'm looking at one of the top up sprays though and you would obviously spray it over your make up a couple of times a day depending how much you were out in it.

Justleaveitblankthen · 11/05/2023 09:09

Only wear SPF on my face if it's really hot when over here (ah, remember that day last year 😂)
Would imagine that it does evaporate quickly in hot sun so I would reapply regularly.

Definitely wouldn't wear foundation in hot weather, I switch to a gradual self tanner that doesn't wash off.

Koalawhala · 11/05/2023 09:11

I use ultrasun tinted sunscreen, which apparently lasts all day so I don’t top up unless on a holiday. It’s fairly dark so you need a bit of a tan for it but I use it as a tinted moisturiser

BelindaBears · 11/05/2023 09:12

Only if out in sun all day e.g. on holiday, and then I don’t wear foundation I wear tinted sunscreen. In everyday life I apply it once in the morning before makeup and if I end up being outdoors more than planned I put a hat on.

LuciferRising · 11/05/2023 09:18

I don't wear makeup. I put it on in the morning and WFH. I will top it up if I am outside during the summer months. But not if I am sitting at my desk all day.

This!

I’ve been pondering this lately. How in the last couple of years it has become ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL to slather spf on constantly. This was never a thing unless you were on holiday or in direct sunshine.

Muu · 11/05/2023 09:21

no. It goes on in the morning and I don’t reapply it.

sunscreen is annoying to wear (and the stuff I like is expensive) so if I wear it once a day every day then that’s better than nothing over the years.

I try to keep my neck and arms covered and I wear a hat when it’s sunny.

I am a fair burner type of person and I’ve never gotten an actual sunburn when wearing sunscreen. But I know my sun protection would have been better reapplying it, I’d probably have a few less freckles/wrinkles long term if I bothered.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 11/05/2023 09:39

Nah not really. I sometimes put on under make up if I know I'm going to be out and about in the sun but my job is largely in the shade all day.

On holiday yes reapply frequently.

AFishCalledKeith · 11/05/2023 09:47

Nope. It goes on once in the morning and that's it. It'll have to do Grin

LaDamaDeElche · 11/05/2023 09:49

Of course not. You wouldn't need to do this unless you were out in direct sunlight constantly.
I live in Spain and put my spf on my face once a day and keep to the shade as much as possible when going to work/out to the shops etc. If I were going to the beach, I wouldn't wear makeup and would apply more frequently than every two hours. I'm assuming you live in the U.K., so even less reason to worry about reapplying, unless you're going to sit in the sun.

Farmageddon · 11/05/2023 10:05

I wear high strength SPF everyday, but couldn't be arsed to fully reapply every 2 hours. Unless you are swimming or sweating a lot or something, or lying out in direct sunlight - and most people are indoors for most of the day anyway. Plus there is no perfect way to completely avoid sun exposure unless you live in a cave.

I do use the Colorscience powder in the summer to 'top up' my face and neck if I'm going out during the day, but that's about it.

According to this video from LabMuffin, one study showed that after 8 hours of application there was about a 30% drop in coverage of sunscreen applied, which if you apply high strength SPF would still give you a good amount.

Basically, I wouldn't worry about it, just apply a good amount in the morning and get on with your day.

Yes I use a cream in the morning before applying makeup then top up throughout the day with the la roche posay invisible mist spf 50+
This can be used under and on top of makeup so there's no need to remove makeup, just spray and go.

I would say this is more for vanity and cosmetic reasons - people are using sunscreen as part of their beauty routine, because we now know more about the long term damage UVA rays cause (premature ageing) than we did before, when it was just about sunburn and UVB rays.

Also, with the increased use of 'active' skincare like retinols, acid exfoliators and vitamin c serums people are more careful to wear sunscreen daily because these things mean your skin can be more sensitive to sun damage.

Basically people are cottoning on to the fact that if you protect daily against sun damage at a younger age, you are less likely to have premature wrinkles, sun spots, pigmentation etc. to deal with later.

Prevention is better than cure and all that.

Usernamen · 11/05/2023 10:19

Nope, just first thing in the morning.

On holiday, probably every 3-4 hours if a beach holiday, but not if a city break (just first thing in the morning again).

I don’t wear make up, so I don’t even have that as an excuse. I think I’ll buy one of these spray things!
