Trouser suit for formal sit down event

PeriConfused · 10/05/2023 07:13

I am 50, size 10, a bit perimenopausal lumpy in the middle and have been invited to a formal work awards event
I was looking a long sleeve, long length black dresses, but rather fancy rocking a trouser suit
Do you think that could work and are there any recommendations for brands to look at?
I would like it to be fitted, perhaps a bit of detail or sparkle.
I work in a male dominated sector, so this could be the wrong choice
I have around £100 to spend and have not event started to think about shoes! I am a traîner and DMs girl and dread heels, but imagine I need something stroppy and feminine to offset the suit
Please help with some links, ideas and advice

These are M&S and look lovely with a suit

Trouser suits are big right now, but most shops are stocking linen and oversized looks. I just bought a gorgeous wide leg linen trouser suit from Zara.
It can absolutely work for the event you're attending, and I'd go with a nice pointy toed kitten heel.

I'd check out Cos, Arket, Saint & Sophia etc. Maybe Karen Millen. Beware S&S though as their customer service is crap.

Of course you can wear a trousers suit! Very fashionable at the moment - much more current than a standard black dress. The only thing I would caution is that the sort of fabric that skims the body nicely is likely to cost a bit over your budget. £100 is a very low amount for a jacket and trousers. Perfectly doable from somewhere like Zara, though. And Zara’s styling is excellent.

If you’re quick you could get this: only a medium left, it seems.

I had not factored in the price of a trouser suit and the need for something to wear under it. Bugger. I would love to do something a bit different and not fall done the long black dress hole
Taking a look at Zara now
I live jumpsuits, but find they flatten the bum too easily, so have to be very careful with those. Also a nightmare if you want to drink more than a glass & need the loo

This would be stupendous. Obviously assuming they have the coordinating trousers.

I think a more tailored would suit my frame, I don't think I'm willowy enough for the baggier look
The light pink is not quite right either, I'm after a bolder colour (not ideal in spring I know!)

For a formal (evening) event you’d only need a camisole / silk vest type of thing underneath. Or a waistcoat (very cool right now). That part of the outfit needn’t cost much.

Banjaxx · 10/05/2023 09:01

oh god YES, wide leg tailored trousers and a fitted waistcoat over a silk shirt would be stunning, you wouldn’t need the blazer as you’d take it off anyway for sitting

If only I could pull this off! www.asos.com/prd/203038897?acquisitionsource=pasteboard

Wallis have a sale on their suit stuff.

Tangelo · 10/05/2023 11:47

Love that hot pink suit - and no reason at all why you couldn’t carry that off. I think the shapes are fairly easy to wear - the trousers are slim but not skinny, and I think a double-breasted jacket is great for evening with layered jewellery. I would deffo consider it and I am much fatter than you!

PeriConfused · 10/05/2023 11:59

I'm now narrowing it down to a coast jumpsuit (I know I said not, but it is more affordable on my budget) or a silk Fred option I think

@waltzingparrot - sadly the jacket is out of stock in my size. Everyone else will be in safe black dresses and tuxedos, so it would have been lush

The thing is, if you invest in a good suit (and Zara is fine - excellent tailoring!), you can continue to use the separates regularly.

I wear a black tuxedo jacket over dresses, jeans, to work, out for dinner etc etc. In fact, I've got so much wear out of it, I've just bought a white one for summer (but am terrified of actually wearing it lol!).

The trousers you can wear with a jumper in winter, with a blouse in spring/autumn, a T shirt in winter, with trainers to dress down, heels to dress up.

Etc etc.

A black dress might be cheaper, but you won't get as much wear out of it.

Good points @EmmaStone
Thank you
