Another wedding dress request (I'm desperate!)

Pleasehelpmedress · 07/05/2023 21:50

I've got a wedding in a couple of weeks and am belatedly facing up to the reality of my breastfeeding body which still hasn't lost baby weight and that I'm not very comfortable with.

I only have one dress that I've pulled out for all weddings the last ten years (aside from my own!) and would love to find something similar that would look good on my current size 14/16 body, though I'm not sure the style would do that anymore. I do like the front style though and don't like to show my back.

I'm not very good at fashion at all, and live very rurally so can't get to shops before then so am hoping for some help with online suggestions. I'm a pretty low key plain dresser so nothing too fancy please!

(Wedding is also in a field in North Scotland where it's currently only 10C so needs to look good with a cardigan!)

Any help is very much appreciated! I've attached photos of my previous much worn dress...

Budget? Colour? Same style? No sleeves, V neck, knee length or longer?

Would a wrap style work? What is your body shape/colouring???

Careerdilemma · 07/05/2023 22:05

Check out the Can I Breastfeed in It? group on Facebook. It's full of women in a similar position asking for wedding guest dress recommendations.

Pleasehelpmedress · 07/05/2023 22:34

See, I don't even know what's important being beyond size!

Ideally £50-70 but I'd go higher for the right dress/quality. I probably need (flattish) shoes and a top too

Thanks @ALittleBitAlexa
I like that wrap dress though it's maybe a bit flamboyant for me. I'll have to Google what a boyfriend blazer is...

@CC4712 thanks -
Colour - blue or green, don't mind pattern if it's botanical ish.

Probably v neck, knee length, don't mind sleeves or not.

I've never worn a wrap style but it could work I think, something for me to look at. I'm not sure of my body shape - I used to be athletic (in a muscular way, big shoulders and thighs) but now I've got a thick waist to go with it. I'm fairly tall. Colouring wise I'm blonde with pale skin, definitely can't wear reds/ pinks. Think Nordic farmer 🤣

Lady V Lyra is worth a look, can BF and flattering on a pp tummy!

asparalite · 07/05/2023 23:04

Maybe you could look on Vinted too, can be good for occasion type dresses!

ALittleBitAlexa · 07/05/2023 23:05

@Pleasehelpmedress Tbf I think she's just wearing it flamboyantly, if you weren't posing like that I think it would be nice. But I hear you. What about this? A bit more reserved. I think midi/midaxi is more modern and flattering than knee-length. If it's going to be outdoors and cold you could consider a camel coat rather than a blazer.

ALittleBitAlexa · 07/05/2023 23:06

Oh also, are you taking the baby and planning to breastfeed in the dress? It wasn't clear

DyslexicPoster · 07/05/2023 23:18

Vinted if you know the L K Bennett dress will fit

Or phase 8 on Vinted. Hard as lots of shades of green. But that kind of cross front is quite common in Phase 8

Thanks for all the help everyone, these are really useful - lots of great suggestions. I think I need a personal shopper....

I hadn't even thought about the fact I'm still breastfeeding as it's just one or two in daytime now (DD is 18 months) - but still an issue. Especially since we're camping at the venue.

I'm going to order a few on my credit card now and hopefully one if them will help me not look like a middle aged frump!

I really like the "good old reliable" original that you showed. If it ain't broke why fix it and you will be comfortable in it too. I'd spend on cute accessories in fuschia pink, bag, shoes, wrap (although not allowed on MN!) if it's cold.

I think it doesn’t fit her right now! I agree it’s very nice, but I particularly love the Silk Fred one you have ordered! I might order that one for the wedding I’m off to this summer ❤️

junebirthdaygirl · 08/05/2023 08:55

If you are in a field what about a trouser suit. With a nice top that you can easily feed with. They are everywhere at the moment with all sorts of colours. It's awkward feeding with a dress and if camping it sounds like a very relaxed wedding.

Monkeymonkeymoo · 08/05/2023 09:42

https://www.stories.com/en/clothing/dresses/midi-dresses/product.flutter-sleeve-midi-dress-green.0840188019.html

I have this dress and wore it a lot last summer when I was post c-section and still breastfeeding. It’s a really flattering shape and the buttons mean it’s easy to open if you need to feed/pump.
(I also loved the flutter sleeves for covering the tops of my arms). The buttons are also pretty secure so it doesn’t just randomly open if your baby pulls on it (some of my breastfeeding/maternity dresses were awful for doing this).
It looks nice with a cardigan/blazer and it’s not too formal so it’s easy to wear on other occasions if you choose different accessories.

CordyLines · 08/05/2023 12:04

@lilsupersparks oops Blush

Ellmau · 08/05/2023 13:52

I think I need a personal shopper.

Any chance you could get to a John Lewis? They do a bookable free service - and I now see you can do it virtually too: Personal Styling Service (johnlewis.com)

Pleasehelpmedress · 08/05/2023 17:47

Thanks @lilsupersparks you're right! But I'm holding on to that dress @CordyLines in the hope that if she ever starts sleeping better I will have some energy to get fit with again 😉

Funnily enough @Monkeymonkeymoo that dress came up in one of my searches, I might buy it to add to my try-on collection (poor postman). Though not sure I ever wear a dress outside of weddings.... But you never know!

Thanks for the suggestion @Niftythrifter and @MalvoliosMother but they're a bit too stylish for me!

That's a good idea @Ellmau I'll keep it in mind next time I'm headed to the city (it's a couple of hours away so not top priority with the work/baby/dog/garden juggle just now!)
