Does anyone like this style and would like to share outfit choices here?

This might not be much help as a) I've had some of them 30-40 years and b) you say you're not keen on real shops but I still find the odd 40s tailored jacket or even full suit in antique centres and certain charity shops.

Antique shops / centres that mainly sell furniture / interiors sometimes have a rail of fusty looking clothes stuck in a corner and I always have a rummage. I found a suit that way last year and paid £25.

The local hospice charity shop gets donations from grateful children / grandchildren when they clear the house. I'm always popping in!

Elsewhere it's much slimmer pickings but even so, I find 40s tailoring sometimes slips under the radar because it can look quite unremarkable at first sight: often grey worsted and very plain because of wartime / post war clothing regulations, also often hand made so no label which occasionally still flummoxes the pricers!

Just wanted to say what a great tip this is! Went to the salvage/antiques place round the corner from me this morning. Beautiful original 1950s wool jacket in near perfect condition (one button a bit loose but an easy fix) in exactly my size. £20!

Ooh @Salacia that sounds lovely. What a find! Hopefully makes you feel better after your trip yesterday.

Yay! I'm really pleased it paid off for you Salacia - and so quickly too!

I don't know why antique dealers aren't a bit more on the ball but I guess they all have their own specialism and maybe branching out of it isn't worth their time. Anyway let's not complain Grin

House of Foxy fans. Was looking at Sailor pants (Long Tall Sally do a nice pair similar and as I'm tall I'm considering this option) and I noticed another style of swing pants to the ones I have. Trying to compare here.

Speaking of 90s actually, when I was out last weekend with a 40s vibe, I spotted a group of young girls celebrating a 20th birthday. The birthday girl was wearing Adidas poppers! They all had a style of black vest top, comfy trousers/trackies and trainers for being out for cocktails.

My youth era is back in fashion, does that make it vintage? 😂

I haven’t bought anything from house of foxy but some of the pieces are lovely. The women I follow on Instagram wear a lot of authentic vintage clothing from the 30s and 40s and they look incredible.

I’d love to go to a 40s weekend as well, they look so much fun.

I love those eras. I've been to a 1940s weekend and it was amazing. We stayed in a cottage in the centre of it all. I had 2 gorgeous original dresses at the time. One for day and a full length silk evening one for the dance in the evening.

That sounds fabulous! Which one did you go to, if you don’t mind me asking?

Salacia · 15/05/2023 11:46

@Floisme literally couldn’t believe my luck! They’ve got a very eclectic selection (tbh most of it is modern/second hand rather than vintage) and the prices seem to be equally as random but I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out.

@PumpkinSpicedTea it’s supposed to be 25ish years for vintage isn’t it so guess the 90s counts! I’m not looking forward to Y2K coming back (when I was a teenager - didn’t even like it at the time, always been an old soul). Most of the vintage shops near me are pretty much all 90s onwards which is disappointing for my wardrobe but not for my purse.

Floisme · 15/05/2023 12:10

Our local vintage shops are already full of Y2K! But to be fair, I think that was a great time for the British high street - prices were coming down because manufacturing had moved overseas but the quality was still reasonable. So I can understand it looking good to a young person who wasn't there first time around. But I do wonder if there'll be a tipping point once vintage = 2010 onwards as that was when quality really started to tank, I think.

Salacia · 15/05/2023 12:26

That’s an interesting point actually, what will be in vintage shops in another 30/40 years…I agree that the quality of modern clothes means they’re not likely to last as long. I also wonder if there isn’t as clear an aesthetic than previous decades?

Fashion is so broad now that it’s difficult to think what will define the decade and what people will want to keep hold of. Obviously everyone didn’t dress the same in the past (once it hit midnight on NYE 1959 the whole world didn’t chuck out their full skirts and change into a bright mini dress) and there have always been different looks in style but I guess we have a cultural stereotype for each decade. Flapper dresses for the 20s, bias cut and slinky for the 30s, landgirl, new look and tea dresses for the 40s, grace kelly for the 50s, hippy/mod for the 60s etc. I’m just not sure what the shorthand will be for the 2020s other than the rise in leisure/lounge wear (which brings us back to clothes that probably won’t last 50 odd years).

Bbq1 · 15/05/2023 16:37

@Greeksummer Hi, It was the 1940s weekend in Haworth West Yorkshire. It's an annual event still going on and I 100% recommend you go. The whole village is themed, everyone dressed up etc. It's fabulous. My dh even dressed up as a GI!

I think it's harder to see the defining features of a decade while you're still living in it but once you've got a bit of distance the patterns can become clearer.

But yeah, fashion cycles are so much shorter now that it's hard to imagine future vintage holding that same strange but magical quality for tomorrow's young people. I think it'll have to reinvent itself, which it's already started doing - local not-very-vintage shops are plastered with signs about saving the planet. It's almost like they're saying, 'Yes we know it's all shit but think of the environment'!

I can also foresee certain labels becoming collectable in the future. For what it's worth (probably nowt) my money's on Top Shop because it was so huge before it crashed and burned, plus some of it was actually really good!

Greeksummer · 16/05/2023 16:26

That’s the one I’ve been looking at going to but wasn’t sure if I’d want to go solo but you’ve convinced me @Bbq1 . I’ve missed my chance this year (I think it’s this weekend?) but I’m definitely going next year.

Oh yes, definitely go. It's very lively with lots going on and people very friendly so I imagine a solo trip would be absolutely fine. One tip : Stay in Haworth itself to be at the heart of it all but I'd recommend booking asap for next year. Have a fabulous time!

Good point about not being able to see what the defining trends are whilst in the era. I reckon you’re right about the pivoting to promoting the environmental benefits of vintage over the styles. Also think you’re on to something with Top Shop, especially the Kate Moss collaborations!

Hi all. Any clothes or outfit updates?

OP posts:
TheBirdintheCave · 21/05/2023 19:18

Just a lot more sewing here! I'm starting my husband's cabana suit this week and making myself a skirt from a 1939 pattern :) Still ploughing through all of the sewing for my little boy. He has one beach outfit, two shirts and two pairs of shorts so far. One more beach outfit to go and then buttons on everything!

Salacia · 22/05/2023 11:53

Amazing @TheBirdintheCave

Im trying to be good and not spend any money at the minute so have been enjoying all the Instagram accounts people posted! I’m off on holiday next week so might see what I can find there (done some Googling of vintage shops!).

I did get my sister in law a little 1950s celluloid brooch for her birthday though.

PumpkinSpicedTea · 03/06/2023 16:09

@TheBirdintheCave that sounds amazing. Hope you don't mind posting a photo of the end result if you feel comfortable.

How does everyone feel about Kimonos? They look cute but dunno if it'll look as nice on me 😂

I think kimonos look lovely , but they arent for me. I would find the floatiness annoying.

PumpkinSpicedTea · 03/06/2023 16:37

See I love the floaty and love how they've matched it with the swing pants in the photo. My worry is feeling like I'm wearing pjs 😂

OP posts:
SirChenjins · 03/06/2023 17:16

My friend wears kimonos and looks amazing. She tends to wear them with jeans and highs heeled boots, and has great taste in big rings and earrings, so she avoids the pj look.

TheBirdintheCave · 03/06/2023 23:53

I will definitely post photos 😬 I'm nearly at the finish line now! Did a shed load of button holes on my son's tops this evening. Things remaining are as follows:

Hem husband's shorts
Add button holes to husband's shirt
Sew buttons on everything (eugh)
Finish my top.

TheBirdintheCave · 06/06/2023 21:48

It will only let me post three at a time but here you go :) My son's outfits are all made from fabric scraps and old clothes from charity shops hence the slightly mismatched patterns and extra seams.
