Does anyone like this style and would like to share outfit choices here?

Anyone fancy having a crack at describing outfit of the day/what they’re wearing? I’m enjoying getting ideas for what everyone else is mixing and matching!

I’m more modern today with some vintage touches. Black linen jumpsuit/boiler suit from M&S via Vinted, oxblood brogues and a big, bright 1970s style cardigan to walk home in later.

Toomanysquishmallows · 10/05/2023 10:26

@Salacia , not very vintage today , as I’m at the vets with my cat . I’m wearing a mid length , navy floral dress , but with white trainers and a yellow raincoat .

PumpkinSpicedTea · 10/05/2023 13:05

@Salacia I love this idea. Sadly today I am in jeans and t shirt, trainers etc as on a day off and school run etc!

I went to a show on Sunday and wore my Seamstress of Bloomsbury red polka dot jumpsuit, a 1940s pearl necklace and a modern blazer and bag 😊

Oh I love that jumpsuit @PumpkinSpicedTea! You look amazing. Really elegant. I love how the blazer makes it a bit more modern. Quite tempted by a seamstress of Bloomsbury jumpsuit now (although struggled with fit with stuff I’ve got from there before).

Here is a link to a local shop near me that is filled with Vintage inspired and real vintage pieces. You can online shop there too so have to share the link. The shop itself is just heaven:

https://vintagequine.com

I was just going to recommend this one! Love this shop so much - a mooch round this and the village and estate is my idea of heaven, esp if a cake is involved.

PumpkinSpicedTea · 10/05/2023 13:52

Thank you @Salacia 😊honestly the jumpsuit is so so comfy, like wearing pjs! the waist is expandable, zip at the front so easy to get on and off. The length is brilliant as I'm tall and its perfect length for me. The Vintage Quine shop ladies say if you need them taken up they recommend using the fabric for accessories like head bands etc!

@SirChenjins yes! The village in itself is just lovely as well then you go into that shop and it's heaven!

For anyone with Facebook Vintage Quine are brilliant on social media as well, love their posts.

Thanks for the suggestion - have followed them!

Squirrelblanket · 10/05/2023 14:58

Do you have any suggestions of good Instagram pages to follow for 30/40s style please? I've already followed the sewing bee lady suggested upthread.

Floisme · 10/05/2023 14:59

I'm wearing a 1960s suit jacket today with jeans. I sometimes wish I could think up a different way of wearing them but I do really like this look. Also a Miss Marple style 60s brooch.

The suit was from Hunky Dory on Brick Lane. I've not been for a couple of years but on my last visit - and unlike a lot of the Brick Lane vintage shops - they were still selling some genuine 1950s/60s and even the odd 40s item at reasonable prices.

I also used to like House of Vintage, on one of the streets off Brick Lane - pricier but some beautiful things (no fustiness!). However I've just checked online and it looks like they've moved on to mostly 90s and later, which is a shame although understandable.

Here's a fab instagram account for inspiration instagram.com/s.nova.vintage?igshid=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==

I went to the Brick Lane Vintage Market (the one underground) last weekend and was so disappointed! Pretty much all 90s and so expensive compared to what I’m used to. It was a Sunday and a lot of the stalls were shut so it might be better in the week. Didn’t have chance to go anywhere else as we had dinner plans.

Ourshoddyhouse · 10/05/2023 16:36

I love this style, but not quite brave enough. I do have a couple of Run& Fly tea dresses which I wear with DMs and some Hell Bunny dresses that I haven't actually worn yet.
Otherwise I'm jeans and hoodies...

TheBirdintheCave · 10/05/2023 17:04

I have to sew most of my things as I find the online shops don't sell many genuine looking garments. I find the cloth often feels too thin and the patterns are a bit pinup rather than average person if that makes sense.

Unfortunately I sized out of all but one of my original dresses when I had my son 🤦🏻‍♀️

I'm currently sewing a 50's summer wardrobe for said son but it's slow going right now as we've just completed our first IVF cycle.

Yeah, apart from Hunky Dory (and possibly House of Vintage?) I don't think there's much left around Brick Lane selling 'old school' vintage.
I don't know if there are any places left on Camden Passage (Islington)? I used to make day trips to London just to go there but I've read that Annie's (the best known one) has now closed which dismayed me, even though her prices had been out of my league for a while.

I’d love to see your clothes! And get what you mean about thin material. Think it adds the the costume feel you get with some repro stuff. Although I’ve had some fairly bizarre fabrics in original stuff (think when synthetics were taking off as new and exciting!).

Hope you’re bearing up with the IVF. I’ve had two cycles in just over a year so know how brutal it can be. I think it’s one of the things that actually pushed me more into vintage clothing as a distraction (lots of time feeling sorry for myself on the sofa spending time on Pinterest etc). I’ve always loved it but it’s only the last 18 months or so that I’ve started properly buying. Wearing a big 1960s fake fur shrug to appointments helped me feel like me rather than just a patient.

TheBirdintheCave · 10/05/2023 18:08

@Salacia Sorry you've had to go through it as well :( We had our egg collection yesterday so I'm just sore at the moment but it was a freeze all cycle due to OHSS risk (I have PCO) so we won't get to transfer until late June/July.

Distractions are definitely good! I have spent all day shopping for vintage style accessories for our upcoming holiday 😂 I also bought this pattern to make for my husband :) I wanted to do myself a 30s beach pyjama set but I definitely won't have time now. Will probably settle for making a new linen skirt instead😊

Not sure I have many photos of my stuff easily accessible. I'll ask my husband later if he has any on his laptop :) Our holiday photos rarely see the light of day despite him being a photographer 😂

Salacia · 10/05/2023 18:43

@TheBirdintheCave you sound like an incredibly well dressed family! I’d love a pair of beach pyjamas. Hope you’re not uncomfortable for too long.

I came home to a couple of vintage parcels. A cropped 1960s blouse with a tie waist which I’m trying to decide how I can style for work tomorrow and a very kitsch 60s clutch bag in a velvet(ish) fabric with a historic courting couple printed on it which I’m planning on using as a wedding handbag this year.

TheBirdintheCave · 10/05/2023 18:47

@Salacia Ooh exciting parcels! 😬

And the aim is to be well dressed yes but in the winter I am in leggings 90% of the time 😂

Squirrelblanket · 10/05/2023 18:54

Thanks so much for the recommendations!

Salacia · 11/05/2023 09:20

New top! Pictured on the Etsy model not me. Have worn to work with a high waisted teal skirt and oxblood monkstraps.

@Salacia Very nice! :D

Salacia · 13/05/2023 16:28

Disappointed by a vintage fair today - so much 90s stuff, cheap sunglasses and anything pre 1980 was £££. Very limited selection (was hoping for a hat!). Did get a sweet little 1970s wedgewood cameo ring though so not a complete waste of time.
