What shoes to go with wide leg trousers?

I am loving the wide-leg trouser look at the moment but I am really struggling to know what shoes to wear with them?

In shop windows and on websites the ones I like always seem to be paired with heavy black sandals.
Here's an example from Whistles:

I am 39, 5'8 tall and pear shaped but reasonably slim so I reckon I could pull this look off, but to be perfectly honest I actually prefer something a bit more classic.

The weather is simply too cold in the UK for open toe sandals to be a go-to footwear choice for me. I work in a tech-adjacent job and I interact with everyone from startup folks to bankers and lawyers. So I'm trying to build a wardrobe that looks somewhat trendy but that can also work in more formal and conservative settings (where sandals wouldn't really be appropriate)

What would work? Stilettos with a pointy toe? Some form of closed-toe sandal? Smart trainers? Help! I left my fashion sense in 2016 and still wear skinny jeans, ballet flats and other things that I am told are dreadfully passé!

Also these trousers - really like the silhouette but is there a good alternative to the black sandals to pair them with?

I don’t like cropped, but love wide leg trousers. I wear a bit of height normally, a chunky sole boot or shoe, and as weather gets nicer but not so nice I can wear my kangol faux Chanel chunky double strap sliders, I’m wearing a sharp very pointy flat shoe. Winkle picker almost, offsets the flowiness and amount of fabric. Or air max with formal trousers and top.

I wear mine with the ballet style converse and I think it looks great. Mind you I think my ballet converse look great with everything 😁

BHRK · 04/05/2023 20:22

Ballerinas are back so you can wear those. Otherwise I wear trainers and open toed sandals (it will get warm!)

NancyJoan · 04/05/2023 20:23

With that ankle length pair, chunky loafers or trainers. Full length I would wear with ankle boots with a pointed/almond toe.

Doggymummar · 04/05/2023 20:27

I have some black and white zebra pointy toe ones that look great with red Karen Millen ones. Today it was my Stan Smith trainers with grey check ones from Next and I have white Doc marten sandals for linen ones and my north fACE DUVET SHOES For other more dressy day wear ones fromCos and Hush, all full length tho

Unbridezilla · 04/05/2023 20:42

For full length ones, I wear white trainers, or for a classic work look a pair of loafers or ballet pumps

Cropped usually chunky black loafers.

If I didn't have to walk loads, I'd also be considering some mules

ProstituteHair · 04/05/2023 20:47

Definitely not a pointy stiletto! A point flat at a push. I do think cropped wide legs are more suited to sandals as they're a fairly casual summer style.

If you're looking for something to not wear with sandals a full length wide-leg would be better. You're tall so they won't swamp you, can be worn with pretty much any flat shoe style depending on fabric, length, width and season!

If you fancy a cropped pair I think a kick flare looks better if you want to wear it with a closed-toe shoe, in which case pointy flats or mary-janes would a good choice for this spring.

Leftbutcameback · 04/05/2023 20:51

Like others say either chunky trainers, pointed shoes / boots, or Birkenstocks for me. I don’t have cropped length trousers, only full length wide legged ones, but my pointed flat shoes are my favourite

Sunnysunbun · 04/05/2023 21:15

It has to be something chunky or trainers. Not ballet flats. They look awful with a wide leg.

hairdresserbreakup · 04/05/2023 21:56

I disagree that ballet flats would look bad, but my first thought was chunky loafers or pointed flats.

Bouledeneige · 04/05/2023 22:00

I wear trainers or chunky loafers.

Olinguita · 04/05/2023 22:03

Thanks so much for all the replies, this is really useful!
Based on your responses, I reckon the cropped trousers work better for a more relaxed/semi formal look with trainers or sandals, and that I should go for full length trousers for a smart look. I never quite seem to get the chunky loafer look right so I might skip those, but I love all the other suggestions
