DD's lips

Can anyone recommend something that will heal my DD's lips? It doesn't help that she licks them too often, but we've tried all sorts of balms & creams and nothing seems to work. The mark above her lip just came up earlier when she was drinking out of a metal cooler bottle I don't know if it's the way she was drinking out of it that caused a sort of suction (that what she says caused it but it hasn't abated yet) or she's had a reaction to the metal. Her lips are constantly dry and cracked like this. She's 12.

Vaseline and stop licking them. Thing is when they’re dry and tight licking them relieves the discomfort momentarily… Need to use the Vaseline frequently and for around a week.

Aquaphor.

iloveburmese3 · 02/05/2023 06:27

Best lip mask on the market and I use it frequently through the day - the only thing that works for me

Notanothernewname · 02/05/2023 06:36

My lips can get so dry they actually split and bleed and I always find lip balms just sit there and don't sink in(or come off when I drink), creams work better on my lips as my skin absorbs them. Even hand cream(I use Atrixo) works better than lip balm.

ChypreNovice · 02/05/2023 07:01

Thank God for @MissLucyEyelesbarrow’s post.

OP I’d follow the advice from the person on the thread who manages skin conditions for a living.

My skin is itching at just the thought of putting some of the suggestions on here on your dd’s poor irritated skin 🙈
Hope you find a health care professional recommended solution soon.

Another vote for Lanolin. I started using Lansinoh (to use up a tube after I didn't require it for breastfeeding) on my constantly cracked, sore lips and it's the only thing that has broken the cycle for years. You can get Lansinoh lip balm in a small tube or a product called Lanolips (I guess your daughter probably won't want to carry around a tube saying 'nipple cream')! The lanolin products seem expensive, but a little goes a really long way and the tube will last ages. I like to apply as a 'lip mask' just before bed as it'll sit there and work its magic for hours and I can feel the difference in the morning (especially noticeable when my lips were at their dryest).

freesiasandpeonies · 02/05/2023 07:15

Bepanthen, definitely; it heals as well as
moisturises. For me, as someone with a lifetime of splitting, bleeding lips, Bepanthen is the only thing that works and it works
quickly. As others have said, put it on generously overnight but use it through the day too.

I would also get her tested for allergies.

I'll add... since using Lansinoh, my lips have never gone back to the awful state they were in as they were given a chance to heal. Now I use it every so often when I feel they're getting dry.

I know it's been said but Bepanthan is the most likely to work. It is fantastic for this sort of thing. I am really sensitive to loads of stuff and whenever my skin is irritated I use some and it works in a day or two. Slather it on at night (and during day).

FixItDuck · 02/05/2023 07:23

Another vote for 8 hour cream. Amazing stuff.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 02/05/2023 07:24

From the shape, she's deliberately pressing the bottle into the area and then sucking, which is then abrading the area with the acidic drink. Whether this is unintentionally or whether she's trying to make her lips fuller like on Instagram is harder to tell.

No more drinking from bottles.

boodacious · 02/05/2023 07:32

Elastoplast Wound Healing Cream is absolutely amazing. I bought for a surgical wound, but it works on so many things. Dry skin, as a lip balm, healing scratches/cuts, healed a cold sore up in about a third of the time. Smile

CityCommuter · 02/05/2023 07:32

@LifeInAHamsterWheel you need to buy your DD Nivea caring lip scrub with Aloe Vera lip balm. It's in a green tube like a lipstick and is the best ever as when it's applied it does the work for you. It's not actually a scrub like a face scrub so I think the name is a bit silly, but it's a fab lip balm and it will work!

when my stepson was on Roaccutane it completely dried everything out and he was in agony with his lips in particular. I did some research on recommendations made by others who had been on the same meds and eucerin came out too. Was the only thing that worked for my stepson

I suffer similarly.

Preventive methods such as balms and salves won't really work so you need to treat the underlying issue

For the skin surrounding the mouth over the counter hydrocortisone cream. I needed this but it does say not to use it in face but I do. Very thinly. Shoul improve quickly, stinger steroid work more quickly.

I had sores at the corner -cheltis -I needed fucidin cream on prescription -actually I used some we had in the cupboard for the dog- I only needed it once.

To help heal was blistex was the only thing.

Once all the inflammation subsided try okeefes wind up to protect. It might make it worse now as it's so inflamed right now.

Or go to the GP although personally I try and avoid at all costs unless I'm desperate!

This is a new bottle she got, I've taken it away! but she was drinking water so nothing acidic and definitely not trying to get a 'pout' she's 12 but not at all interested in style or beauty (unlike her mum!!)

Thanks for all the further suggestions (we've tried many of them already though) and in particular to the skin specialist - DD does suffer with eczema flare ups though not on her face before - so I will read through your response again and speak to our pharmacist if necessary. She doesn't wear any jewellery but I will keep the possibility of a nickel allergy in mind.

Best wishes Smile

Blisteze or Blistex is the very BEST thing.

SkylightDinnerFor2 · 02/05/2023 10:46

Carmex tends to work better on the lips, I feel like Vaseline just sits on the surface and doesn't help IMO

BonjourCrisette · 02/05/2023 10:46

Lip Rehab by Barry M is amazing. Lansinoh also brilliant.

SirVixofVixHall · 02/05/2023 10:47

Weleda weather protection cream works really well on this, my dds used to get chapping around their lips in Winter and this was a miracle cure.

MrsRoyCropper · 02/05/2023 10:51

Definitely not vaseline, sudocreme will heal the soreness, use overnight until healed. Then no lip balm products with fragrance at all.

iwantawisteriathisyear · 02/05/2023 11:02

NurseNeerDoWell · 01/05/2023 19:37

Nuxe reve de miel in the little pot is the only lip balm that’s ever worked for me.

Me too. I used to get dry, sore lips all the time and chelitis in the winter. Absolutely nothing worked until I tried the little pot of nuxe. It's fantastic stuff.
Just to add that my granddaughter gets sore, lips and chapped skin around them. Savlon clears it up quite quickly.

BodyKeepingScore · 02/05/2023 11:10

Blistex is one of the best - it has ammonia in it and it's one we always recommended in pharmacy.

tiutinkerbell · 02/05/2023 11:45

Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream. Saviour for lips.

freesiasandpeonies · 02/05/2023 11:58

I had eczema as a child and still have occasional flare ups. I’ve tried everything on my lips; anything with fragrance (Nuxe) or the chemicals that are in things like Carmex, Blistex; no chance.

As I say, I personally have found Bepanthen the most effective; Lansinoh might work. I assume Sudocreme is similar to Bepanthen (am not in the UK).
