DD's lips

Can anyone recommend something that will heal my DD's lips? It doesn't help that she licks them too often, but we've tried all sorts of balms & creams and nothing seems to work. The mark above her lip just came up earlier when she was drinking out of a metal cooler bottle I don't know if it's the way she was drinking out of it that caused a sort of suction (that what she says caused it but it hasn't abated yet) or she's had a reaction to the metal. Her lips are constantly dry and cracked like this. She's 12.

Okeeffes lip repair, the overnight one in the small orange tub is very effective.

vasekine is the worst. Carmex is much better.

Fallulah · 01/05/2023 18:57

Carmex but the pot not the tube. I get a hideous reaction to the one in the tube, even though when I contacted them they insisted the ingredients were identical!

I 3rd Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream. It feels like bliss when your lips are like this.
I've heard vaseline can make this situation worse as it covers lips but doesn't soak in and heal. So it's fine for prevention but not cure.

You could also try to get her to catch herself when she is licking her lips... Try an elastic band on her wrist, get her to ping it whenever she licks her lips, this makes her notice the act of doing it, the point being that she can then catch herself and stop before she does. She should then have something in her pocket handy to smooth on instead and make herself more comfortable.

I used carmex for my son Vaseline did nothing and he said it felt horrible. I did tell him he had to stop licking his lips and mouth and he has except occasionally it’ll flare up again but I think it’s just one of those things, he has a lip balm for daily use now too which helps except when I forget about checking his pockets and wash it 🙄

Diprobase will have it looking so much better overnight

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 01/05/2023 19:04

Thanks so much for all the suggestions. We've tried a lot of them already including O'Keeffes, La Roche Posay, Blistex and EA 8 hour cream. Will try the others and if no joy it might need a dr to check it out.

Lansinoh.

I love Carmex in the little tub and 100% agree that the tube is NOT the same stuff!

I would go to the Dr if a number of cosmetic otc treatments haven’t worked. If you have problems getting GP appts on your area, get some pharmacist advice in the meantime.

Blistex relief cream. I get cracks in the corners of my mouth and it heals them overnight!

Speedweed · 01/05/2023 19:10

Don't get any lipbalms with camphor or menthol (so carmex, anything medicated is out), as these dry the lips - lovely manufacturers want you applying their product all the time, but for dry lips already it will make them worse.

Also I developed an allergy to a preservative used in many lipbalms which made my lips dry with cracks at the corners (also a symptom of b12 deficiency, but that wasn't the issue for me), so look for a balm without any preservative in case that's the issue (I used lanolips and it cleared it up within a couple of weeks).

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 01/05/2023 19:11

Thank you 😊

Blistex also good

Agree, Blistex is what you need.

Nereides · 01/05/2023 19:13

Nothing is likely to work unless she stops licking them. I’d stick with Vaseline and focus on breaking the licking habit.

User17865 · 01/05/2023 19:13

Burt bees overnight lip mask if worth a try. For daytime and before bed. It stays on better than anything else I’ve tried.

YukoandHiro · 01/05/2023 19:14

Epaderm ointment. It's like Vaseline but without being drying.

WhichSpoon · 01/05/2023 19:15

As others have said, Lansinoh

midnightblue12 · 01/05/2023 19:16

Hemp lip balm from the body shop is amazing! The only one that will ever work for me!

Dolphining · 01/05/2023 19:23

I would give coconut oil a try. What you'd buy in the supermarket for cooking. As it's solid at room temperature, it's great to use as a lip balm. I think products such as Vaseline are just a barrier product.

It might be worth investigating orolfacial granulomatosis. There’s a very good Facebook group where you can learn lots about it.

sufferers are advised to follow a cinnamon and Benzoates free diet that can be found in the files section of the group.

my granddaughter has it, my DD had her do the ‘diet’ which is basically a list of foods to not eat, and those ok to eat and saw huge differences in it fairly quickly. My DGD has reacted well to the changes in her diet and is much happier.

vivaespanaole · 01/05/2023 19:27

Is she drinking anything she has an allergy to? My sons used to get like this with certain brands of fresh orange juice.

Basically a lot of natural things you would think the body would be ok with actually cause swelling of the lips and other side effects.

Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream is miraculous

NurseNeerDoWell · 01/05/2023 19:37

Nuxe reve de miel in the little pot is the only lip balm that’s ever worked for me.
