Hi all
My hair needs urgent help...
It's dry and just looks so dull.
It essentially looks (and feels) like hay!

Have had blood tests (thyroid, female hormones, iron, vit D etc. and all ok)

I take regular wellwoman and top up with calcium, vit D and extra iron (as prone to anaemia).

Feel like I need a decent shampoo and conditioner for starters... was using head and shoulders for ages due to itchy scalp but think it's contributed to the dull dry look. Hair naturally curly so think alot of it is chronic heat damage but still...it's never been this bad.

Now use the Aussie products which are normally great for me but...not really helping.

Willing to spend more than average on decent hair products if you have any recommendations for similar hair issues??

Thanks!

L'Oreal extraordinary oil on damp hair.

HorsingAround2022 · 25/04/2023 07:47

I highly recommend the Bleach London Reincarnation mask, it’s done wonders for my hair.

Onemyownhere · 25/04/2023 07:51

I also recommend castor oil u only need to use a small amount on hair every week

Arewehumanorarewecupboards · 25/04/2023 07:53

Pureology products are really good.

JuneOsborne · 25/04/2023 07:54

Phillip Kingsley elasticizer is the key.

dudsville · 25/04/2023 07:58

My hair turned from swishy shiny to straw like in my early 40s. If one came loose and went astray in my top i would honestly have thought there was a twig in my top. I spent yrs looking for what would work. Basically i went from buying cheap herbal essences to philip kingsley, Aveda, Olaplex. There are lots of threads about this so a search should give you lots of ideas. My approach was to throw money at it until i found what works for me. I saw a comedian on Netflix last weekend who described the same process. Older hair is a faff.

tatteddear · 25/04/2023 08:02

I have similar issues with my hair OP-just as I've turned 43 it's started and I put it down to hormones as I've not altered anything else.
Olaplex might help.
Elasticiser was awful on my hair. It's a bit trial and error with products but the issue is the good ones cost so much that it's expensive trial and error!

I had keratin at the hairdresser which did wonders for mine-but again, expensive. I also stated taking liquid collagen which has made my nails stronger if nothing else.

mischlerischler · 25/04/2023 08:04

I would start with a good haircut for your hair type.

Limit your heat use as much as possible.

I think recommending a brand is very difficult as everyone's hair will react differently.

I have long, wavy hair and what works for me is - very little heat and when used then together with a heat protectant. Ketastese or pureology shampoo and conditioner are my favorite. Hair oil for ends when the hair is still slightly damp. Since my hair is wavy I don't brush it when dry otherwise it would look puffy.

I would try to buy travel sizes if different brands and see what works for you.

But I think a good haircut can also make a lot of difference.

Aveda damage remedy but I use the deep conditioner every wash.

AlexandraJJ · 25/04/2023 08:08

Kerastase vote here. The resistence range. Shampoo, conditioner and if you can stretch too the over night serum and oil as well it’s a game changer

Sweetapplestrudel · 25/04/2023 11:51

Thanks everyone! Will start trying out some of these recommendations and thanks for the heads-up regarding similar threads...first time on style and beauty (I'm usually mega low maintenance)!.

I used to spend so, so little money on my hair. Good luck!

CindersAgain · 25/04/2023 12:34

This is a good leave in conditioner. You can add a couple of drops of vegetable oil(!) as you spread it on your hands if you need something even richer.

What is your diet like?

I assume you don't dye your hair?

My3cents1 · 25/04/2023 14:20

Anything Sisley Rituals Hair care. Bloody expensive outlay but it works. Cost per use is good as you only need to use very small amounts. The balm is amazing. AllBeauty do decent deals.

Sweetapplestrudel · 25/04/2023 18:45

Diet is overall good.... my main meals are balanced and generally healthy (no dietary restrictions except for dairy)...eat decent amounts of fruit and veg with meals... but must admit I spoil it by snacking more than I should (biscuits and crisps...I tell myself it's not so bad as I buy "lentil" crisps and tend to eat plain biscuits e.g rich tea! ). I do take supplements as well. I suspect it's hormonal changes as I'm getting older.

Stop using heat entirely for a few months, my hair was in awful condition and thinning badly, blood tests were normal, diet ok etc. I stopped using heat and it did get much better although I had to be patient. Now I’ve got used to styling without heat, I use a hairdryer but try to avoid straighteners. What length is it? I also had my hair cut quite short to help it recover which helped.

RumbleMum · 25/04/2023 18:53

If your hair is curly have a look at the Curly Girl method. Essentially - consider ditching the shampoo and use co-wash and leave in conditioner - and do some intensive conditioning treatments too. There's more to it than that but that should help - curly hair is naturally dry and brittle and needs some serious love.

get a trial size as this completely ruined my hair! Made is super elastic, it just stretched and broke when I brushed it. I do have very fine fair hair though.

Stressyfab · 25/04/2023 19:07

do some research on marine collagen supplements, for some reason marine is the better option compared to the other collagens 🤷‍♀️

Was dreading this suggestion...although I know you're right!
It's long - between shoulder and armpit length.
It's just so much easier to manage when straight and also think it suits me better straight....have a wedding next month...perhaps after that I will try ditching the heat :(

Phillip Kingsley elasticizer is the key.

The Elasticzer extreme is fantastic and works straight away.

You can actually see the difference.
Op this is a pre shampoo. Leave it in for an hour under a cap and towel.
