Do you have clothes you only wear on holiday?

Just wondering if this is just me or if others are the same? Do you have certain clothes you only ever wear on holiday? At home I am mostly in neutrals, sort of low-key preppy style, but on holiday all the bright prints come out, swishy maxi dresses, linen shorts and shirt combos, 'cute' wrap dresses. DH is the same, he has a few shirts that he only ever wears on holiday. Some dresses and outfits I've had for years and years as they only ever get worn on my hols.

We are off to Spain soon and I've been eyeing up a few new purchases- one is a maxi dress with a bright leaf print. It's really nice, and would be perfectly acceptable to wear at home in the summer, but for some reason I know it would just be a 'holiday dress'.

Anyone else?

Yes.
There's not much call for a bikini in my everyday life.
Ditto things like a big beach cover up and so forth.

DramaAlpaca · 22/04/2023 00:06

Yes. Shorts mainly. I wouldn't be seen dead in them in my normal life.

BellaBlossoms · 22/04/2023 00:07

Yes! I have 2 suitcases full of clothes that I wear solely on holiday. I don’t have much use for floaty summer dresses in summer in the Highlands of Scotland 😂. The sheep just wouldn’t appreciate them!

I love my floaty dresses/bikinis/shorts/vest tops when we go abroad and I rotate them to whatever country and season. Eg I’ll take different clothes when we visit Cambodia to what I take going to Mexico.

Same. Feel far more judged here than when on holiday.

KillerSandy · 22/04/2023 01:29

Of course and then there is a distinction between hot holiday places eg holidaying in a Greek island requires different stuff ( white and other floaty dresses) from say holidaying in California. And yes the breakfast dress!

LuluTaylor · 22/04/2023 02:09

No I don't. I like to travel light. If I can avoid a suitcase I will, zero chance of it getting lost then. I prefer an enormous handbag and an overnight bag. I take whatever will be comfortable for the weather and which I don't care if it gets destroyed, so not the newest things. I want to go about without a care in the world on holiday not worry about keeping clothes nice. I'll have a jacket/coat, cardigan, jeans and trainers from travelling there, so if the weather is unexpectedly cold I'm already sorted for things to wear under/over whatever clothes I packed. At home my clothes go in the wash at the end of the day everyday. On holiday I wear the same things over and over and if they're filthy I wash them out in the sink. If they're ruined they're binned when leaving. I only take one bikini and wash it by hand at the end of each day. It dries overnight in hot places. I take a couple of bits of underwear in case I really don't need a bikini that day, but mostly the bikini is my underwear on holiday and I'll be by the pool or on the beach most of the time for most days anyway. If I really needed something I hadn't taken with me I could buy it while I was there. I don't take toiletries and makeup either, I buy things when I arrive and bin the dregs when I leave. Forgoing brushes for the holidays and applying makeup with my fingers. I don't care if I can't get my usual things, it's only for a week or two. I CBA to arrive home and have to face a mountain of washing and unpacking. I leave my usual high standards behind, turning feral for the duration of the holiday and morphing into someone who is happy to rough it for a while.

Yeah, 2 pairs of wide legged linen trousers, bought for a pound each in Marks sale. Wouldn't wear them here.

TheKnittedCharacter · 22/11/2023 20:03

Yes, I have an entire wardrobe of clothes, swimwear, beach cover ups and sandals that I wear only on holiday.

lindyloo57 · 22/11/2023 21:01

Yes I do that, the only thing is the photos I'm wearing the same things again and again, so this year I took a few different things , and some of my favourites that I take year after year.

localnotail · 22/11/2023 22:26

I have very light floaty dresses which I would not wear at home, as I would just look a bit stupid - cant see myself walking about in London wearing see through long open neck dresses. Which looks ace with a bikini somewhere in Spain or Italy.

KillerSandy · 23/11/2023 09:08

I have very warm European resort beach type clothes, England summer clothes, Scottish summer clothes and then warm winter resort clothes. Urban is then something else 😃

Lovethatforyouhun · 23/11/2023 09:11

Yes i do. Lots of cotton dresses, linen shirts and denim shorts and skirts. Oh and breakfast dresses lol

GettingStuffed · 23/11/2023 09:12

Yes, I have quite a few, mainly coverups for the back ans dresses for warmer evenings.

I've been really stressed this week, my brain has problems deciding on hot weather clothes when I cold. Hopefully just after lunch tomorrow (local time) I'll be nice and warm

TuktukGoose · 23/11/2023 10:45

I don't, but only because I take every opportunity to wear floaty maxi dresses and sandals in the UK as well (I rarely feel the cold).

I can absolutely see the joy of having 'holiday clothes,' though. They would give me an instant mental lift. I've noticed that wearing clothes to work seems to infect them with 'workiness,' so that they're never so much fun to wear afterwards. Presumably the reverse would happen with clothes you only wear on holiday.

Bookist · 23/11/2023 10:51

Yes. I keep my holiday clothes separately in the same wardrobe I keep my Going Out Out clothes. At home I'm quite low key with my clothes, but my holiday outfits are much brighter and more glamorous. I also keep my holiday jewellery and shoes separately too.

junebirthdaygirl · 23/11/2023 10:56

Short shorts. Love them on holidays but at home it's knee length ones as l would look quite out of place walking our High Street in these. All white shorts. Worn every day on holidays and then put them away for the year.

BringMeSunshines · 23/11/2023 11:35

Pray tell whats a 'breakfast dress' !

I live in a hot tropical climate so I wear a lot of linen items, trousers, tops dresses, but no shorts as I have legs like a old cart horse. I dont shy away from bright colour or patterns, and am partial to a bronzed shoe or two.

I also wear a lot of kimono/kurta/kaftan type clothing if I am holiday here, as I am also aware of not being underdressed and observing local feelings on women and swimwear and the like, to be respectful really. I am lucky to be able to buy things that cost a fortune at times in the UK for relatively little. So really I wear holiday clothes most of the time!

Have a bit of a soft spot for straw/macrame bags love those for holidays, get all your bits and pieces in them, really I have way to many. Same with big bright chunky jewellery (but still have delicate silver bits as well)

headcheffer · 23/11/2023 11:44

Yes. Some of my holiday clothes come in to my summer wardrobe, but most stay in the suitcase as I just wouldn't wear them here. You need a different outfit for when it's 35 degrees still in the evening when you're away compared to when it's 23 degrees max in the day here!!

HolySkirts · 23/11/2023 11:50

Doesn't it depend what you do/where you tend to go on holidays? If you go on beach holidays in hot places, then I imagine you'll probably need some things you would simply have no call for at home. My idea of a good holiday is either hiking/climbing where we rent a house with friends nearby, or going to a city or series of cities with a ton of art, so no, I don't have clothes I only ever wear on holiday. I still wear clothes that date from when I lived in a hot climate here in the hotter parts of an Irish summer, or if I'm in Italy in warm weather, but I'm more wide-legged culottes/linen trousers and loose shirts over vests than bright prints or maxi dresses.

LeggyLegsEleven · 23/11/2023 11:59

I don’t wear shorts here but I would in Florida for instance.
My MIL had 2 full chest of drawers full of holiday clothes. I think she just added to it and never got rid (she wore a jumper in the U.K. year round). But she never went on holiday for over 10 years before she died. Lots to get rid of.

snowfootsteps · 23/11/2023 12:13

I love the idea of going feral on holiday (as per poster in April) but I like European city breaks so tend to wear the same clothes as I would here.

I don't have many tropical weight clothes so, if there's a heatwave here (UK), the same things I'd wear abroad come out. Only my 2 bikini sets and flipflops aren't worn here. Tbh I don't think my bikinis would be worn anywhere these days - but I'm holding out for a pilates miracle.

Iamblocked2 · 23/11/2023 12:16

no, I have a pretty small minimalistic wardrobe and make sure I only buy things I actually wear. I think it's utter waste to buy stuff to only get it out once a year.

DGPP · 23/11/2023 12:24

No. I like to wear all my clothes and so holiday clothes also need to be suitable for home - even if just a nice dinner!!

purplecorkheart · 23/11/2023 12:30

I have a couple pairs of shorts and some swimsuits mainly because I never wear shorts or swimsuits in daily life. I wear nearly all my clothes I can's see the point in keeping things just for holidays.

useitorlose · 23/11/2023 12:38

I'm fortunate that I'm in summer clothes all year round. Instead I have winter clothes that stay in boxes for trips back to the UK!
