Do you have clothes you only wear on holiday?

Just wondering if this is just me or if others are the same? Do you have certain clothes you only ever wear on holiday? At home I am mostly in neutrals, sort of low-key preppy style, but on holiday all the bright prints come out, swishy maxi dresses, linen shorts and shirt combos, 'cute' wrap dresses. DH is the same, he has a few shirts that he only ever wears on holiday. Some dresses and outfits I've had for years and years as they only ever get worn on my hols.

We are off to Spain soon and I've been eyeing up a few new purchases- one is a maxi dress with a bright leaf print. It's really nice, and would be perfectly acceptable to wear at home in the summer, but for some reason I know it would just be a 'holiday dress'.

Anyone else?

I try not to have holiday clothes, but there are a few things that are really only suitable in the tropics... mainly because they were bought in the tropics as everything else was too hot when I was menopausal.

LeatherSkirt82 · 21/04/2023 17:49

No, I don't own anything I wouldn't wear at home. The problem is that I very rarely get to wear the same clothes on holidays and at home due to climate differences.

LoveLabradors · 21/04/2023 18:40

Yes I do. Not loads but some lovely dresses, tops, shorts and sandals that I save for Greece or other destinations each year - some many years old but just favourites that make me happy to pull out of my suitcase and wear.

OldHouseLover · 21/04/2023 18:44

Yes I do!
Over the past few years I've built up a nice summer wardrobe & I add to it. I could wear these clothes at home at the weekends if I wanted to but I love having some nice fresh things to wear when I'm away.

CoolShoeshine · 21/04/2023 18:44

Yes I’ve a load of holiday clothes (very rarely they do get worn in this country in the garden on a mega hot day). For some reason I feel a bit ‘undressed’ in them at home because they show more flesh than my UK clothes. I don’t even wear them on the plane, I always dash to the airport loos on arrival to change.

Shinyandnew1 · 21/04/2023 18:46

Yes, but only because it’s rarely hot enough in this country to wear them!

michaelmacrae · 21/04/2023 18:48

Yes I never wear shorts in my local town, I'm far too self-conscious! I have a few for holidays though, and some older t-shirts and tops that I wouldn't wear in the UK any more because they're a bit out of date.

summerfinn · 21/04/2023 18:59

You do realise it's a privilege to go on holiday let alone have holiday clothes.....some people have no food... I jest I jest. 😂😂🙈

Fairislefandango · 21/04/2023 19:16

No. Like you, I generally wear neutrals. I don’t like bright prints, and swishy maxi dresses aren't really me, whether I'm on holiday or not! I do wear shorts on holiday if I'm somewhere hot. I usuallu take one fairly low-key dress in case we go out for dinner

Cyclingmummy1 · 21/04/2023 19:33

I don't find much call at home for a bikini to be honest 😂😂.

We lived abroad for a while so I have quite a lot of clothes which were regular wear but now only come out for holidays.

starfishmummy · 21/04/2023 19:40

I have some, mostly beach things.

My mum had a friend who had a completely separate set of holiday clothes. She would get home, wash them and then pack then in her suitcase ready for the next time.

Tribblesarelovely · 21/04/2023 19:45

Yes, I have an entire wardrobe I only wear on holiday, makes it more special.

Geckle · 21/04/2023 19:52

Kind of. I’m more adventurous with my style on holiday. Perhaps it’s the feel good factor, the warm weather, feeling more relaxed in general.

I wear things differently in a way I wouldn’t at home. Short denim shorts with a vest tucked in and a loose flowy shirt and nice sandals - I wouldn’t wear the short shorts back home.

BBCK · 21/04/2023 19:56

I have 2 dresses I’ve been wearing only on holiday for the last 20 years . Bought them in BHS! 😂😂

mastertomsmum · 21/04/2023 19:58

I have some clothes that are mostly only worn on summer hols. Shorts (hardly ever wear them at other times) 3 t shirts I love but are quite old (would have worn out a few years ago had I not restricted them to hols) specific trainers (because all the sand never really comes out) specific sandals (flashy gold ones that are good for in the hotel if we go to one)

InSpainTheRain · 21/04/2023 20:01

Yes I do! Mostly because our fav place for holidays is Thailand and is obviously very hot, far hotter than we usually get in the UK. So I do keep a few things that I only wear on holiday, and also "cover up" dresses which I pop over my swim suit to go between room and pool.

Of course! I thought everyone did? They live in a suitcase under my bed for 50 weeks a year.(Where they like to while away the time by turning themselves from bright and stylish to cheap looking and loud, going from bright white to greyish beige, loosing shape and elasticity if they're swimwear, and becoming two sizes smaller!)

Ponderingwindow · 21/04/2023 20:02

I have some special spf clothing that I only use when I will be outside for long periods of time on high uv days. That tends to happen most often on holiday, but occasionally I use an item for a local day out.

recklessgran · 21/04/2023 20:13

Yes, I have an entire holiday wardrobe including gorgeous underwear [ lots of white stuff] so it's all kept especially for the four weeks a year I'm abroad and in the sun. I have a number of linen tops and dresses, white shorts and trousers, plus beach dresses, bikinis and sandals. I love it all but never wear any of it here- couldn't be bothered to iron all the linen stuff on a regular basis for a start and we don't often have the weather to warrant wearing beautiful pastels or wacky brights do we? On top of that we all know how quickly white undies discolour so I stick to coloured or black sets at home. I love getting it all out for packing and generally replace one or two pieces before each holiday. To qualify this I'd like to add it's taken me years to get to this point and I am old with no dependents!

Lampzade · 21/04/2023 20:14

I have five maxi dresses and I only wear them on holiday abroad

BendingSpoons · 21/04/2023 20:29

I embrace the bright patterns at home! I like to wear my summer dresses and shorts all summer if it's warm enough.

TheLongpigs · 21/04/2023 21:25

@TremendousTurnip please could you link to the leaf print maxi? I would love this, I think!

Zipps · 22/04/2023 00:00

I have a few things certain bikinis and beach cover ups but everything else I wear here including shorts. I don't have any floral or patterned dresses and I've not got any maxi dresses either.
