My comfort outfit- 3/4 length coat, jeans/wide leg trousers and trainers, what is the summer equivalent?

I feel really happy in my wide, side stripe trousers, trainers and my knee length navy lightweight wool coat. It's my comfort outfit. The coat covers my bum and disguises the incipient muffin top. I slightly dread summer as I look awful in clingy t shirts (muffin top! fat arms!). What can my summer comfort outfit be??

I wear my clothes like a uniform too. I think it's all about the shoes/ coat really so I've bought some black leather shoes which I think look summery with the side cut outs but practical https://www.the-art-company.com/uk/en/sandals-woman-creta-calf-leather-black-blue-0384#variant=17024&talla=1681

Knee length lightweight unstructured(lagenlook type thing) linen cardigan in charcoal and one in an blue/ grey colour.

Boat neck t shirts from markies ( elbow length sleeves, no cleavage) in black/ white/ charcoal/ stripes.

Skirts from Ebay, a variety in silk or linen normally in a colour or embroidered and you get loads of bargains as often they've been bought for an occaision for £££s and then languished at the bottom of the hamper as they are handwash only/ dryclean then end up on ebay for a fiver eventually.

I chuck them in the machine as they didn't cost me £££s

I’m currently completely in love with this Massimo Alba coat. Doubt it will fall into my wardrobe any time this year, but I’ll probably look for something similar elsewhere.

This denim shirt is elegant and long enough to act as a ‘coat’ over anything else.

And this Zara gilet could also replace a coat.

Then you just wear lighter weight trousers and whatever you prefer on your feet.

I wear a linen v neck t shirt as they're not clingy & often have pretty loose sleeves in white/navy/black. Or a linen/muslin shirt in a white/black/blue/chambray.
Midaxi skirts from Monsoon/Hush or button fronted jeans in a light/medium wash. A cashmere long beige belted coatigan or a Protected Species tour in khaki over the top if cool. At the moment I'm wearing a knee length leopard print mac over jeans & Cashmere. A linen or muslin shirt over the top if it's high summer or a light cotton shirt dress.

Seconding linen v-neck t shirts. I have some from M&S and a couple from Sainsbury's I think. Definitely a more forgiving silhouette. I like them tucked into wide leg jeans (or wide legged cropped jeans) for summer.

OP i started a similar thread about side stripe trousers a few weeks ago.

I ended up buying some black culottes from Nobody's Child at marks and Spencer, I sized up to a 12 as the waist band was a bit tight. I love them. They work with my white trainers and the same tops I wore with my side strip trousers.

anon2022anon · 20/04/2023 10:18

Culottes are my go to. I also have several pairs of 'pull on' trousers from H&M, last year I absolutely lived in them- very thin and loose but flattering, and about £15 a pair. Not the greatest quality, but they don't look cheap on IMO

Twoshoesnewshoes · 20/04/2023 10:21

Also love culottes, good linen ones in next and, unexpectedly, peacocks!

I love jersey midi dresses, t shirt fabric, loose fit , with trainers. Try next again, Boden, and seasalt

Loose, A line midi or maxi dress with a cardigan or light mac coat and comfortable trainers or supportive sandals.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 20/04/2023 10:27

I've got a khaki light weight jacket and a checked 'shacket' that I'm wearing now instead of a warm coat. I do think going forward I could do with something lightweight and showerproof for spring as I do live in the NW.

Cantonet · 20/04/2023 10:34

Yes, culottes work really well. The linen h&m ones in a bright blue are really good. One brilliant loose, non-clingy t shirt is the Hush Avalon.

Loose midi dress , long line cardigan, converse, trainers or sandals (depending on weather and mood). I have a thigh length trench coat for typical British summer weather!

atthebottomofthehill · 20/04/2023 10:37

I desperately want to wear culottes but my bottom is too big and wobbly 😭 I think loose dresses are my friend

ThroughTheMirrorEmpire · 20/04/2023 10:49

I’m wearing the same side stripe trousers with a loose top tucked in, white trainers and an oversized shirt worn open… gives a similar silhouette…

MarciaSaysANumber · 20/04/2023 10:59

Agree with @gogohmm that the easiest alternative might be a very simple, loose, absolutely not droopy or clingy dress.

Like this from Skall Studio

Or, if you’re feeling flush, this ultra-simple one from Margaret Howell. The less expensive dresses are also worth a look.
