What's the best fake diamonds

Right, as long as I have been alive, I've had a dream of buying myself a gorgeous diamond ring. I'm now in the financial position to do so, have been to shop after shop, got close to buying but at the last minute, just cannot do it. A friend has a 15k ring which now on her finger just isn't worth it. I want the sparkle, I want the look but I just don't want to wear that amount of money. I've boringly lost the draw of having it, but I would still like the sparkly stuff. What's a good fake diamond company?

I want them to look real i think. I'm actually annoyed with myself as now I can finally afford it, they don't seem worth it

In that case you need moissanite rather than QVC!

ChocolateHelps · 11/04/2023 13:21

Carat has lovely lab grown diamonds. I have a really dressy set of emerald earings as part is my 50th last year, had lots of compliments. Carat have real life shops so you can at least go and have a look

allswellthatends · 11/04/2023 13:40

My top advice is to go for a real gold, not plate, setting. And if you want a yellow gold band, credibility is boosted by still having white gold claws as would be done for a real diamond. These days the setting is more of a giveaway than the stone...

OldHouseLover · 11/04/2023 13:46

My top advice is buy the ring you have dreamt of and saved for and enjoy it! I'm not sure you'll ever love a fake ring as much and you'll still spent a considerable amount to get one that looks plausibly real.

Or else choose something else entirely. To me, it's like buying a fake designer bag. I'd rather have a fantastic unbranded bag than a cheap fake Gucci or whatever.

If you've saved the money for this very purpose why are you getting cold feet now?

I have expensive diamonds and they are absolutely 100% worth it to be as I love and cherish them. My ring has more then doubled for valuation purposes since |I got it.

Would you like to show an example of the type of ring you're interested in and perhaps people can suggest less expensive places to get similar?

Creepyrosemary · 11/04/2023 13:56

If you just want something sparkly, would Swarovsky be a good fit? Their stuff is really sparkly.

ChangedMyNameAgainAgain · 11/04/2023 13:57

I'd definitely go for moissanite. I've got a moissanite ring and earrings and they definitely look more "real" than zirconia stuff. Not as bright white, if you know what I mean. The stones seem to have more depth to them, somehow. TJC have some really good moissanite pieces.

ChangedMyNameAgainAgain · 12/04/2023 09:48

The sun is out this morning so the moissanite ring is having a sparkle! It's a big stone which definitely wouldn't be mistaken for a diamond, I'd like a smaller one really. But it makes me smile as I love rainbows. Here it is alongside a smaller CZ stone, so you can hopefully see what I mean about the difference - the CZ is more of a cool white and the moissanite is warmer. It was £20 from TJC in the sale :)

QVC. Diamonique.

LadyPoison · 12/04/2023 17:30

Moissanite will give you the best sparkle for your ££.

If you want it to look "real" don't go too big.

TheQueensCousin · 12/04/2023 19:53

Have you looked at Warren James? Great value and they also sell diamonds.
I believe you can also buy online as well as in a physical shop.

Newnanit · 12/04/2023 23:06

@allswellthatends i have a real diamond ring set all in gold. Really don’t like the two tone look. People probably think it’s fake 😆

Wfhandbored · 13/04/2023 06:22

This is my moissanite engagement ring. Went for 2 carat size with stones along the band and white gold setting. I honestly couldn't be happier with it and it was about 1/5 of the cost it would have been if it was a mined diamond. If that.

I don't regret any of the jewellery dh bought me, neither did he. Why not buy a second hand diamond ring and reset it in platinum?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 13/04/2023 22:57

I've bought some Moissanite earrings , party for research purposes and partly because I can wear them all day/night
They're screw-backs , which is what I'd look for if I ever invested in real diamond earrings .
And because I felt encouraged and enabled by this thread .
I;ll see how they look in daylight
DH and I went to the Diamond factory in Amsterdam and looked at flawless high grade diamonds (just a look Grin ) the colour refraction was something else

Anonmousse · 14/04/2023 08:44

Sorry to disagree but I would advise against getting screw back earrings.(sorry slight derail from initial question) They are very difficult to do up when you can't see what you're doing and easy to cross-thread, meaning they either don't work securely or get stuck and the post snaps.

Redlocks28 · 14/04/2023 09:26

My mum has a lovely pair of screw back diamond earrings which she had the backs swapped for traditional butterfly backs as the post was wider and felt really uncomfortable in her ears.

LadyPoison · 14/04/2023 10:11

I also hate the screw backs. I have a pair of diamond earrings with screw backs that I never wear.

They are uncomfortable to get in as the screw scrapes the inside of my lobe and they don't tighten enough so the stones don't sit tight against my lobes but hang forward. They just don't look good.

You want a second hand/vintage ring.

Tonnes cheaper. Super quality. Look real, well because they are. No one is looking at a QVC ring and thinking "that's a lovely diamond", it might be a lovely ring there's some really pretty stuff they do, but they are quite obviously not real diamonds when you see them in the flesh.

Mine is from 1890. Just over 2ct solitaire, old cut. It's stunning. People assume we took out a second mortgage. If we'd got it "new" it would have been upwards of £50k. I took it to a jeweller who completely refurbished and polished the clasp/band, so it looked brand new. I know it's French, and it would have been from someone of very high status back then. I love it has a story behind it, and wonder, who was she? Did she divorce? Pass it down to her son/daughter, who lost it in a game of backgammon? Grin Where did it travel with her?

Old European cut in particular, sparkle in a completely different way to new cut diamonds. They are so lively and fiery. I can spot one a mile off now I know what I'm looking at. I wouldn't buy a modern cut stone now. When you think, all diamonds are millions of years old already, the concept of "second hand" isn't really a thing IMHO.

PercysPurseIsEmpty · 14/04/2023 10:38

Go on YouTube and see a lab grown diamond compared to a mined diamond and a Moissanite, all three together. You can also see the same rings as a diamond and a Moissanite ring too and you would be very hard pushed to tell the difference. Also people showing their Moissanite rings, they are just beautiful plus hard

Moisannite will test as a diamond on a diamond tester.

I have a 1 carat Moisannite solitaire from Etsy imported from India. I also have a Moissanite eternity ring from a UK company, also Etsy. My 1 carat was less than £100 a couple of years ago so I felt it was worth the punt, it is absolutely stunning. I won't upload a pic as my photos have metadata in and I can't be arsed to turn that off to take a photo.

LadyPoison · 14/04/2023 11:49

Most people could tell the difference between diamond and moissanite if they are side by side. They refract the light differently. On their own though I don't think many people would know unless they look closely and have some gem knowledge.

Happylittlekitty · 14/04/2023 12:14

Hello, I had this exact dilemma last year and decided to buy Moissanite in the end. I spent a long time talking to different companies and used this company and this is my ring, he has lots of styles. I went with a hearts and arrows cut as I wanted less sparkle but it’s a personal choice, he has brilliant and European cuts too. I have it in the titanium which looks like platinum and is hard wearing but again you can pick whichever metal suits you and your lifestyle x

Shinyandnew1 · 14/04/2023 12:48

@Happylittlekitty thats funny-I have been looking at the Moissanite earrings by that Etsy seller. They do some lovely stuff but the seller has ignored all of my emails over the last month which makes me a) unsure about what to order and b) reluctant to order from someone who doesn’t bother to respond!

He does three types of metal-all of which are described as being really good value for money, strong, durable and looking like white gold or platinum but there are no photos to compare the 3 and they all cost the same so I don’t know the difference! What’s the advantage of Titanium or white filled gold or surgical steel?!

Happylittlekitty · 14/04/2023 13:34

@Shinyandnew1
thats such a shame and I completely agree with you, I wouldn’t order if I was ignored either! I have spoken to him and found him knowledgeable and nice but he did say that he is very busy and manages everything himself, I think he needs to employ someone as some of the reviews say the same thing, he didn’t answer every question i had so I got the sense he was struggling to manage that side of things. I have to say the quality of the ring is incredible, I’m very fussy and have never bought anything other than diamonds so I was expecting to find fault but I found the quality much better than expected, just the communication is lacking really. This is my first titanium purchase and I’m pleased I picked it as it’s hard wearing and fuss free, I usually wear white gold but find this needs more upkeep. In terms of colour it sits between white gold and platinum il see if I can attach a pic for you.

Shinyandnew1 · 14/04/2023 13:37

A picture would be really helpful, thank you so much! I don’t think I would go for surgical steel as that sounds rather clinical so it’s a choice between titanium and filled white gold but I don’t 100% get what that is?!

The lack of response worries me as it makes me think he wouldn’t reply afterwards if there were issues with the order as well.
