Headbands for a (nearly) 40yo?

Comfies · 08/04/2023 13:10

I'm growing out my hair and it has reached a quite unattractive point (read, wavy, unkempt mullet 😬😂).

However, I can put it in a small ponytail.

I want to make it look less scruffy for work and was thinking of maybe a nice headband? But are they a bit too little-girlish? I have a fairly responsible job and work in a relatively smart office, so don't want to look ridiculous!

Can anyone advise please?

My sister is 39 and wears them and really suits them.
I can't pull them off. They just don't suit me but it's not because im nearly 41.

51 here. My teen dd told me I can wear whatever I want.. Few hard hairbands here...

I was thinking the soft kind which are a bit head scarf-y? I saw someone on YouTube saying she was buying some for spring / summer and thought they looked nice.

I'm 63 and wear them if I want my hair out of my way and can't be bothered putting it up.

I agree scarf type ones are probably easier to get to grips with for starters (or even an actual scarf) as they sit flatter than the knotted Alice band styles.

I am a recent convert to them. I did have some doubts but equally I think head bands and Alice bands look great, without exception, on other people of all ages.

I have a very responsible job in a rather scruffy office. I don't think I look ridiculous.

My DM is 77 and wears them. She looks neither like an overgrown toddler, nor Princess Anne. I am envious because they always ping off my head.

I have short hair that regularly gets in the way or needs tidying. I wear these kind. Some lovely ones o my Amazon but this is from Oliver bonas.

I am 44 btw never considered there was an age for headbands!

Tinkerbellflowers · 08/04/2023 17:32

Penny Mordaunt looked very nice in her headband at the King's Proclamation.

I think I'm just feeling insecure for no reason. But I'm quite tall and broad (just my build #blessed 😂). I don't know if I might look a bit comical in one as I associate them with children.

But it's reassuring to read that other adults wear them

I know what you mean about feeling insecure. Google "older women wearing headbands" or similar. There are loads of beautiful, stylish women - ok one will be Helen Mirren but most are just ordinary "real- life" women.

That's why I said although I initially had doubts (I grew out my severe, short bob in lockdown) I literally haven't seen any woman of any age who doesnt suit a hairband or hairwrap. It seems unlikely that you or I are the sole exceptions.

You are very wise Natasha 🦉

Yes, I will Google some pictures for inspiration

Love this

I can't cope without mine. I'll stop wearing it when I go bald.

UndercoverCop · 08/04/2023 18:34

I use them, late thirties, my hair is curly and I need something to manage it a bit sometimes.
Wore one at court (work) a few weeks ago no one batted an eye

I'm 52 and recently starting to wear a small thin one with stones in it's hardly noticeable and I've had some lovely comments

StarDolphins · 08/04/2023 18:41

I’m 47 & wear headbands loads! Leopard print mainly!

Clementineorsatsuma · 08/04/2023 18:43

I'm 60 and I wear headbands 🤷‍♀️

Magnoliainbloom · 08/04/2023 22:36

Anthropologie has gorgeous ones.

Comfies · 08/04/2023 22:51

Oh thanks @Magnoliainbloom! Will take a look as I don't even know what I'm looking for. So all shopping suggestions welcome

I'm 41 and wear them a lot as I'm growing out a fringe 😁 Professional job, scruffy office. I like the ones with a knot in the middle, they seem to suit my face best.

Bluebellwood129 · 08/04/2023 23:10

I love headbands. Jennifer Behr's are my favourites.

Try local craft/ gift shops too.

Liberty have beautiful but very expensive ones. I bought one last year and the price made me get over any doubts- it was too expensive not to wear it !
