I’ve had enough of dying my hair and I’m in mid sixties stopped dying it at the start of Jan so really not that long, it does look a mess with the grey coming through, but apart from trying not to be impatient I’m loving the new colour, Anyone else tried this recently or has done this. Obviously I’m not the only one! 🤣interested in knowing if people are pleased with how their hair has turned out, I realise it’s a big change.

I grew mine out during lockdown and I'm so pleased I did - I've had a lot of compliments.

Finding a good stylist helps - I completely changed my style and changed hairdresser as the old one wouldn't listen to me.

And, keeping the frizz and yellowing at bay is something to think about. I only wash my hair twice a week, don't use conditioner as that contributes to yellowing and use this as a masque once a week:

For the frizz, I use an Aveda heat protection spray and a cheap as chips coconut serum from a pound shop.

This is a good Instagram account for inspiration and to read her story about the mistakes she made when she went grey:

Oooh, thanks for the link, you hair looks fab @Greysilverbluehair

Do you buy the lavender ?

HappyMe6 · 05/04/2023 14:28

Lovely colour as well Greysilverbluehair I wasn’t aware of conditioner contributing to yellowing thanks for that tip, I got a good hairdresser who actually listens and gives me some ice styles, nothing worse than a hairdresser where you ask them to do something and scissor happy or doesn’t do what you are asking, thank you for the Instagram link

I bought the earl grey one.

Schmutter · 05/04/2023 14:39

I think it can look lovely but it’s so dependent on the shade of grey you have, your skin tone and the style of your hair.

A shortish trendy hair cut can look amazing.

I am about 60% grey but my hair is long and curly. I can’t have short, curly hair as it looks like a granny perm. And long grey hair is just a bit too witchy. So I’ll be getting it dyed for as long as I can.

That's all true, but dyed hair on an older face can look even more witchy.

And I was sick of the expensive-to-maintain highlighted ubiquitous middle-aged bob I had before going grey.

I do take more care of how my clothes and general appearance are now as it's easier to fall into 'unkempt' with slightly longer grey hair imo. Although the advantage of older age means I also give fewer fucks about other people's opinions.

Schmutter · 05/04/2023 15:06

Yes, dyed hair on an older face = Colleen Nolan.

My hair that’s not grey is very dark, but I have it all dyed a ‘Bronde/caramel’ shade now I’m 51.

soupmaker · 05/04/2023 15:12

I keep the yellow tones at bay with purple shampoo and conditioner and use a clear hair oil to beat the frizz. Currently using John Frieda products. Never wash or condition my hair with yellow products as I get blonde streaks which I loathe!

Yes. And also, I can spot a man a mile off who dyes his hair dark. It is even more noticeable on men than women I think because women can mix things up a bit with make up.

Jonathon Ross looks ridiculous now. He denies he dyes it. Okaaaay......

Just embrace the grey, men! You look much better for it. My DH has an enviable silvery hair colour, I'm aiming for it!

Madcats · 05/04/2023 16:20

Whilst we ponder the relative merits of grey vs dyed hair can I whinge about the unfairness of DH's genes.

His Dad is/was Danish and DH had white hair until his mid teens, which gradually became blonder (bleaching back in the sun). When he hit his 50's it has been getting darker and darker...almost dark brown now...balder, but browner.

IAcceptCookies · 05/04/2023 16:50

HappyMe6 · 05/04/2023 12:49

IAcceptCookies try again. It doesn’t look good for a start but if you think everyone has to start somewhere and the pics on here are great, to be honest I wasn’t in the frame of mind to start till I was 65
I just used to dread dying mine all the time which was silly as I’m now thinking all those years I wasted when I could have started before.

Yes, I may try again, but where do I start?
The bottom 2/3 of my hair is permanent dark red; the root third has lots of temporary red dye on it (lasts ages and gives a nice effect on mixed colour hair) because the permanent was drying my hair out. I'm growing out the permanent slowly but wouldn't know how to make the transition to grey from here before then... reluctant to have dye removed or anything by hairdresser as hair already damaged. For reasons I won't bore you with I can't cut it short, only bob-length, which it already is.

That's unusual!

My mum is one of 4 sisters. All but one went grey in their late thirties. My aunt, however, still had black hair in her early seventies. You could spot the odd silver strand, but it was so strange to see someone with Celtic colouring whose hair remained so dark. I haven't seen her for years, so I imagine it's got to be grey by now!

HappyMe6 · 05/04/2023 17:07

IAcceptCookies Well me being me is just leaving mine to come through I have Bob too , I just wear hats when I go out, but I do have a cut and blow dry regularly every 6/8 weeks my hair grows I suppose around inch or there about every6weeks, and that’s what I’m doing! I also don’t want hairdresser adding any colour to it nor do I want my darker hair touched I’m letting it do it’s thing till it’s all silver, I’m willing to wait for as long as it takes as I think as long as I keep up the regular trims then it’s got to look better than not

Just joining in here to say I've decided to go natural and let it all grow out - not had my hair coloured now since about November and I think it looks okay. What I'm struggling with is what colours to wear with my grey hair - I watch carefully to see what other people wear who have grey and I think black can look stunning, grey clothes sometimes can as well but I can see that some other clothes I used to wear when my hair was blonde streaks now look a bit wrong. Has anyone else found this?

Vicliz24 · 05/04/2023 17:35

I grew out my grey from a very dark brown at 49 . I can't lie the grow out was hard and nobody seemed to have grey hair around me . I will say I've never had so many people giving me their negative opinions ever and that wasn't easy . However i persevered and at six months I chopped the dyed hair off so I was left with a short silver pixie . Since then I've grown it back to bra strap length and absolutely everyone now raves about how lovely it is . I've never regretted it ever . Before my hair was one monotone colour but now it has natural jig and lowlights and really suits my skin tone. I do have to take more care with make up than I used to but that's a small price to pay for the freedom from chemicals.

IAcceptCookies · 05/04/2023 18:09

That's quite brave @HappyMe6 @Vicliz24 and anyone else who's just grown it out, rather than go for the streaks/highlight/balayage option! The transition period must be challenging.
I may start and see if I can bear it!

Oh yes, very much so.

What used to suit me as light brown does not really suit me as gre/white. And I go quite brown in the sun (just have to look at the sun and I'm brown) and it doesn't half look odd with my colour hair!

The colours that suit me best are silver, grey, black, white etc, but I do not want to wear those colours all the time!

Yes, very much so. I now look good in black again after it making me look increasingly washed out whilst I dyed my hair dark brown. Very pleased about that!

My skin tone is generally warm and I have brown eyes, so for instance warm greys and soft whites still suit me, but cool greys and bright white really don't. The same goes for most other colours too.

The one exception to that seems to be cream. A coolish beige cream doesn't look too bad, whereas a warm cream looks just awful.

Jellyheadbang · 05/04/2023 18:22

Has anyone tried naturally stripping dye with vinegar (or similar natural product)? Ive seen this mentioned on a few going grey sites but they tend to be US based sites.

Greentree1 · 05/04/2023 18:26

Never died just let it go grey naturally, but in a long term relationship where it isn't important. And so what everyone goes grey.

HappyMe6 · 05/04/2023 18:34

I think a lot depends on if you have a warm skin tone or a cool one, eye colour too, I’m just thinking I most probably be wearing more brighter colours. But saying that royal blue looks lovely with silver grey hair fuchsia black. I’m not really a fan of any greens, love camel colour but I don’t think that will suit, I’m warm ivory skin tone with blue grey eyes, I did have my colours done years ago, maybe I should go again when the silver grey comes through completely! That’s another thing to think about now which colours will suit, I’m not giving up my raspberry and coral lipsticks though.
