I’ve had enough of dying my hair and I’m in mid sixties stopped dying it at the start of Jan so really not that long, it does look a mess with the grey coming through, but apart from trying not to be impatient I’m loving the new colour, Anyone else tried this recently or has done this. Obviously I’m not the only one! 🤣interested in knowing if people are pleased with how their hair has turned out, I realise it’s a big change.

NC for this. I shared your sentiment and grew in my grey during lockdown. I loved the colour but my complexion did not. I maintained and enhanced the grey for a couple of years but have recently gone back to my former mid-brown colour. My features look more defined and I have noticed an uptick in male attention. DH claimed to like the grey but recently confessed to preferring the brown although he claims this is because it flatters my face.

I went grey originally because when it complements a woman’s skin tones I think it looks brilliant. I hope yours works out well.

Ponks · 03/04/2023 16:37

I gave up dying my hair a few years ago as think dyed hair can look too harsh against aging skin, and hate the look of that telltale couple of mm grey when it starts growing out.
Although I get some compliments as it can look like "highlights" round my face, it can make me look washed out and a bit unkempt unless I look after it, frizzy grey can look awful.

HappyMe6 · 03/04/2023 16:43

Thank you greydosentsuitme I suppose really not going to know until it’s all through! The thing is my fav colour on me has always been brown it’s the dying every 4 weeks far too much, so I’m excited to see how it will progress if I don’t like it then back to brown I will go

yes ponks I hate grey roots, it’s interesting to see all the different greys that come through.some people look lovely don’t they. Yes I agree frizzy grey looks awful. One of my previous jobs was working with make up as beauty consultant so I know I will have to change my make up and colours I wear. As that can make a difference, not that I wear full make up now,

I'm mid-50s, had dark brown hair originally, started going grey very young, dyed my hair for 25 years, then stopped around 18 months ago. I love the result! There's now only a hint of the dye left on the ends and soon that'll be cut off. What I most like is the variety of shades of silver and grey which I now have. Have a look at some of the other threads or on Google if you feel like it as there's lots of encouragement and tips available for making the transition easier.
Good luck whatever you decide!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 03/04/2023 16:58

I stopped colouring in October 2021, but just have strands here and there other than a “steak” of white at each side. I love it! My hair is dark brown and my hairdresser says I’m only about 5% grey - I’d expected it to be much more. I turned 50 in February. My mother (in her 70s) is horrified and is always spouting off about grey hair being ageing. I think getting old is ageing, and having dyed hair doesn’t disguise that! I have a very sharp cut, done every five weeks (not a new thing since stopping the colour) and think that stops it looking unkempt.

Kentishbornknitter · 03/04/2023 17:00

I stopped dying 10 years ago as it was so expensive and we were downsizing. It took a couple of years to grow out completely but I love the fact that it is now natural and I don’t ever have to worry about roots. I am 58 now and most of my older friends still dye theirs.

notawittyname1954 · 03/04/2023 17:00

I did the same and love my grey now. However I do make more of an effort with makeup to brighten up my face. I was so fed up of the constant colouring.

HappyMe6 · 03/04/2023 17:03

Yes judystilldreamsofhorses I also have my hair cut every six weeks, hopefully with a modern style and if I say if it comes through a nice grey I will be happy!

Kentishbornknitter that’s what I’m looking forward to not having to do anything with the roots, I have a Bob so hopefully mine won’t take two years I have it cut regularly so I doubt would take long as a mid length bob

I stopped dying my hair ginger (after 30 years) this winter. I've always left off the dye in the summer months as the colour bleached too easily & this year there was enough grey to for it - which was cool as I wanted to do something different for my big 50 b'day. I have short hair so it didn't take long to go grey & now I enhance it with some silver dye and shampoo and conditioner.

I uwe Igora Royal Silver with 3% peroxide about once every 6 weeks. No obvious roots as I'm using it brightenmy existing colour.

Plus L'Oréal Professional silver shampoo & conditioner at least once a week
L'Oréal Silver Shampoo

This guy (sadly in the US) is inspirational for helping people go grey beautifully. Unusually he lists his ingredients / method on his posts so you can take that info to your own hairdresser

Thank you so much FirstWorldProblems I’ve been dying my hair since I was 16 I’m almost 66 so years of dying it I’ve been all colours. But this time I thought I’m going to take the plunge, it’s wonder I’ve got any hair left 🤣 I do have it cut regularly though always have done.

I'm 54 and have been grey for about 5 years.
It started off very short, I shaved to a number 2.
It's nearly at my shoulders now, I get a lot of compliments, most people seem to think I dye it this colour 🤷

That's what mine looked like too initially! I went cold turkey and took photos every couple of months to track my progress.
If you're on Facebook there's a group called, I think, Silver Sisters which people sometimes mention. Also try googling "grombre".

HappyMe6 · 03/04/2023 17:50

Coco lapel your hair is absolutely beautiful I’d be over the moon if mine was like that incredible colour. And you don’t even dye it!!!! Im in awe

My hair was dark brown, thick and fairly straight, then a few years ago I started to go greyer and greyer, now I'm almost completely grey (early 50s). I used to dye my hair a lot, for years and years (mostly a reddish or purplish colour) and then started dyeing the greys my natural dark brown but got fed up of the roots regrowth and the colour always looked a bit too solid. Then tried semipermanent pastel colours but just couldn't find the time to keep topping it up. So for the last 8-12 months I've let it stay naturally grey. It's more silvery than dark grey and I have had some compliments on the colour (as grey still seems fairly fashionable) I also have a short pixie cut which gives it some texture and allows the different silvery tones to show through. I wasn't sure about being grey for a while but have now learned to embrace it, I do find that I have to keep up to date with haircuts though as if I let it grow a bit too long I feel that I look more old and tired

HarlanPepper · 04/04/2023 07:35

I'm mid 40s with salt and pepper hair and although I haven't dyed my hair for five years or so, I am now growing it out from having been very short for years. It's now shaggy bob length with a short choppy fringe and I love the different tones in it. I estimate it's about 40% grey, and my original colour is dark brown/black. It looks completely different colours depending on the light, and it's much shinier than I thought it would be.

The only thing is that some of my greys (not all - my hair seems to be a few different textures) have a tendency to frizz so I use a shampoo bar just once a week and otherwise only conditioner and maybe some sea salt spray at the roots for volume. I don't use heat on it unless I have to.

stopthepigeon · 04/04/2023 08:09

18 months in and very nearly there.

On the plus side I now have silky healthy hair scattered with white in a distrubution that looks like a fancy multi-dimensional dye job (according to my hairdresser).

Not having 'roots' is very liberating. And this looks better than a solid block of dense colour, and is more afforable than good highlights (which in any case tend to go warm and brassy on me, but did have once at the start of the transition, following a sort of Jack Martin method).

On the downside our patriarchial ageist society does read grey as old and no longer valuable. Tend to think that is a price worth paying and stereotypes need disrupting, or at the very least playing with?

Redken colour gloss and Shrine temporary colours are good during the tranistion in terms of blending everything together. Nice not to be regularly exposed to nastier chemicals.

Tessisme · 04/04/2023 08:47

I started to grow out my grey during lockdown. It is completely grey now and I am very happy with it. I had black hair and started finding greys in my teens. By the time I was 25, I felt couldn't ignore them, so all those years of dyeing...! My hair is long and in decent condition. I have had loads of compliments, some from people I barely know, who went out of their way to come over and tell me it suited me when I was picking DS2 up from school! And a few compliments from complete strangers too. I am a lazy cow and will never go back to colouring. I got one week where I felt great, a week when the roots were starting to show and irritated me, then spent another week or two spraying it with root cover and worrying that a gust of wind would display my grey roots to the world. All that faff wasn't for me (even though I persevered for over a quarter of a century!)

CharlotteStreetW1 · 04/04/2023 08:57

I stopped dyeing my greying mousey hair 20 years ago in my 30s when I developed an allergy to the dye. I kept it fairly short and it took about 18 months to grow out.

Amazingly it's come out a sort of golden blonde! Everyone assumes it's dyed (including hairdressers) which is a bit annoying but I love it.
