Is it time I stopped dressing like a grungy teenager?!

I am definitely a jeans-and-tshirt person and can't see that changing. I don't own any heels and don't plan on buying any! I live in jeans.

If I'm going out somewhere nice then I wear nice boots, I've got some lovely coats and jackets and some smart tops that I like. A couple of skirts for the summer, with ballet pumps or sandals. I go a bit more "hippy" style in warmer weather and have some nice sun dresses etc.

But on a day-to-day basis I live in band t-shirts, converse/vans trainers with a more slouchy pair of jeans. I have done since I was a teen, and it's just "me". When I bought my latest pair of Vans (black & white checkerboard ones) my DH thought it was very funny because his cousin's 15 year old son has some almost the same. It's got me thinking. Am I starting to look a bit silly?? I know, I know, if I like it then I shouldn't care what anyone else thinks. But I have to admit to feeling a bit self conscious now! What do you think??' I'm 33 and have two young DC, and I definitely don't dress like their friends' more glamorous and trendy mums 🙈

I have never said that women shouldn’t wear band tees and jeans?? I actually told the op to mix it up a bit. I said I wear band tees and jeans. What I did say was that most women over 30 don’t look their best in a band tee and slouchy jeans. And all these pics are actually proving my point. The pics of Kate moss were ok to dire and even Gwen stefani doesn’t look great. If you don’t have the figure of Kate or Gwen (90% won’t) then reconsider your wardrobe if you care what you look like. It’s hardly controversial is it

No one here is addressing the real problem which is people wearing t-shirts of bands they are not fans of, or have never even heard of, for fashion/trend reasons. Seeing someone wear a band t-shirt and unable to name any of their songs is the most heinous crime of all.

This annoys me but only because I was so badly bullied for being a “grunger” when I was teen, I got death threats just because I wore black and always wore a Slipknot hoodie, yet a few years later it was super trendy to wear all the same style clothes!

Surely this depends on your own perception, I’m the same age as the OP and wear similar clothes but I do also love a flowing midi skirt and my dms.
I follow a few Instagram ladies who are older and dress in alt styles and some of them are quite curvy but they all look fabulous!
I will never, ever wear a blazer and I will always go to my mom jeans and a band tee, I’m actually even considering revisiting my teen years and buying some wide leg jeans! 😱 fashion should be fun no matter what age you are!

Of course it should be. But many people still like to look good not fun. People can like to wear whatever they like, other people can of course draw their own conclusions about whether or not said outfits actually suit them.

Genuinely never seen Kate Moss look worse than she does in this picture

I think she looks great 🤷🏻‍♀️

You don’t seem to like anyone having a different opinion to you for some strange reason. Ok you win no woman over 30 should wear band t shirts and jeans, funky blouses and blazers for us all.

Wow you are incredibly rude, you can have your opinion that you don’t feel like someone can look good in slouchy jeans but others are also allowed to think it looks great, personally I think Gwen and Kate look fab, nothing wrong with the slouchy jeans at all.
Everyone has their own opinion but on what looks good and what doesn’t but no one has a right to be so rude about it

Yes and I wonder who @Eyerollcentral is dressing for? If you think men are impressed.with your blazers and you are 40+ literally they don't care. If it's to impress other women that's just sad.

Cornwallinthesun · 05/04/2023 11:39

I always find that when people are rude about appearances online - you conjure up what they look like in real life behind the screen.
😂

I don’t particularly care what anyone else’s opinion is. I am still allowed to have mine. If you seriously looked at that image of Kate Moss and said wow she looks great (whilst not being one of those ‘bowl your over supermodels’…) I think you need to get your sight tested. That’s outfit does precisely nothing for Kate Moss and I think you have just posted the only image you could find of her in slouchy jeans and would say you thought she looked great no matter what it looked like in a futile attempt to ‘own’ me.
I didn’t say no woman over 30 should wear band tees. I said the OP should mix it up a bit and that I wear them myself. I said and stand by that what is nice on you at 18 doesn’t necessarily suit you at 30+ but you can modify your clothing and still dress in line with your taste. The terminally without imagination on this thread have incorrectly transformed this in to I want every woman over 30 dressing like a Margaret thatcher/Kate Middleton. You seem to have taken offence at these statements for reasons that remain beyond me 🤷‍♀️

LadyVictoriaSponge · 05/04/2023 11:53

I think you need to go and have a lie down in a darkened room with a cold flannel.

I have only ever dressed for me darling. I like to look good because I love clothes, I love style, I love looking my best. Pretty pathetic response from you tbqh. How ridic you think wearing blazers would impress men!!! I am a solicitor, a suit jacket is my uniform. A blazer isn’t a horrifying item of the bourgeois conformity to me, it’s a more casual, practical item than my work wear which you can chuck on w a top and jeans at the weekend or in the evening or throw over your shoulders if you are wearing a dress. It’s got pockets and can be buttoned or left open. It covers a multitude and can be matched with limitless outfits…

@Eyerollcentral you were rude about it, that's the point, you came across like a judgemental arsehole. We're all entitled to our opinion fair enough, but you have massively generalised and say 90% of us would look terrible in real life, there's just no need to be like that. There's that old saying, if you have nothing nice to say...

JaneJeffer · 05/04/2023 12:05

Can I just ask the people who think once you hit 30 you have to start dressing differently how long you're allowed to dress in the new way? What's the next age after that you have to reconsider your wardrobe again?

Eyerollcentral · 05/04/2023 12:06

I included myself in that? How is that rude? 90% will look terrible in it, Kate moss and Gwen stefani don’t look good in it. I am a fairly slim and fit size 10 but I might as well be a manatee beside them because they are both probably a size 4 uk max. It’s somewhat confusing as there have been non stop comments that people don’t care what other people think of how they look but once I point out that it won’t be flattering on 90% of the women on this group including myself suddenly that is unforgivable rudeness? So what you really want me is me to say wear whatever you want and everyone looks great in everything, which is a lie.

Changeau · 05/04/2023 12:09

So many people on here stuck in teenage mindsets about their appearance. I am going out on a limb here and 90% of you will look terrible in what you say you are wearing

This was breathtakingly rude @Eyerollcentral and put people's backs up. Also your attitude comes across as hugely patronising. Neither a good 'look'!

30 is the arbitrary number which has been leapt on here as the OP is 33. If adult women actually think that dressing as they did when a teen will look as good on them as they age or post giving birth, I genuinely don’t know what planet they are living on. Why aren’t we allowed to acknowledge that women’s bodies change? I also don’t understand why so many people on this group take it as an insult to say your style should change as you move through life. Elizabeth Windsor and her daughter Anne are the two worst examples of not doing this. Wearing the same styles they had for decades made them both look much older far before their time. Who wants to look like a teenager at 40 or 50 anyway??? Women can look amazing at any age, but very few could do it dressed as a 15 year old.

It’s not rude to say that outfit doesn’t suit you. Do you prefer people to humour you or be honest?

JaneJeffer · 05/04/2023 12:16

But @Eyerollcentral they aren't dressed like modern teenagers they are wearing a version of what they themselves wore as teenagers. Jeans and T shirts are fine on everyone. Now if they said they were wearing rara skirts I might have a word.

JaneFondue · 05/04/2023 12:17

Can someone post a picture of the kind of funky blouse I should be wearing in my 50s? I still wear tees.
