Is it time I stopped dressing like a grungy teenager?!

I am definitely a jeans-and-tshirt person and can't see that changing. I don't own any heels and don't plan on buying any! I live in jeans.

If I'm going out somewhere nice then I wear nice boots, I've got some lovely coats and jackets and some smart tops that I like. A couple of skirts for the summer, with ballet pumps or sandals. I go a bit more "hippy" style in warmer weather and have some nice sun dresses etc.

But on a day-to-day basis I live in band t-shirts, converse/vans trainers with a more slouchy pair of jeans. I have done since I was a teen, and it's just "me". When I bought my latest pair of Vans (black & white checkerboard ones) my DH thought it was very funny because his cousin's 15 year old son has some almost the same. It's got me thinking. Am I starting to look a bit silly?? I know, I know, if I like it then I shouldn't care what anyone else thinks. But I have to admit to feeling a bit self conscious now! What do you think??' I'm 33 and have two young DC, and I definitely don't dress like their friends' more glamorous and trendy mums 🙈

Well tbh I'd probably assume someone younger than 70 wearing a funky blouse and a blazer was a bit frumpy, but there we go.

Never been called frumpy in my life, direct opposite in fact. Frequently complimented on my attire.

davegrohll · 04/04/2023 14:01

@Eyerollcentral how rude to say 90% of us probably look terrible, I'd love to see a pic of you, I'm guessing you're a runway model ?!

Karatema · 04/04/2023 14:03

I am in my 60s and although I don't wear band t-shirts, I do wear t-shirts, jeans, fleece and boots. I recently had to collect an award for the group I belong to; I was the only one able to take time off work. No one said anything but I know the group were worried what I'd wear! They were astonished to see the photo of me smartly dressed with hair styled (they've never seen my hair other than straight) in classic heels! I did laugh at the open mouths!
You do you and don't worry what people think. By the way I was comfortable "smartened up" but I prefer my "couldn't care less" look 😀

davegrohll · 04/04/2023 14:03

Also, funky blouse ? 😆 Are you my mom?!

Most women over 30 look terrible in a band t shirt and slouchy jeans, I would include myself in that. As I have said that’s why myself and others adapt our style to work for us as we age. People can wear whatever they want and good luck to them but it’s not a look that plays to the strengths of a lot of women.

Riverlee · 04/04/2023 14:16

I haven’t actually brought a band tshirt for years, and now seriously contemplating buying one.

I know I have humiliated myself with the use of funky! Still stands you can get some really nice blouses that don’t look like something yer granny would wear! Open neck oversize shirt w the dreaded blazer over it, straight leg jeans in grey, black and whiteish tones total Patti Smith vibes and much more flattering than a t shirt and baggy jeans

Pigtailsandall · 04/04/2023 21:44

No one here is addressing the real problem which is people wearing t-shirts of bands they are not fans of, or have never even heard of, for fashion/trend reasons. Seeing someone wear a band t-shirt and unable to name any of their songs is the most heinous crime of all.

Lol Kate Moss isn’t most women is she? In fact she is a bona fide super model 🤦‍♀️ Plus she isn’t wearing slouchy jeans either 🤷‍♀️

LadyVictoriaSponge · 04/04/2023 22:20

If she wasn’t a supermodel she would be your average London yummy mummy, slim, attractive and a bit edgy, she isn’t ‘otherworldly’ like some supermodels, her look is very attainable hence her popularity, I have a picture of her in slouchy jeans and a t shirt but can’t upload it, she looks like an attractive woman in her forties.

LadyVictoriaSponge · 04/04/2023 22:22

Here you go, slouchy jeans

Looks like Kate's finding it a bit parky. She should get a nice blazer x

chevvyroo · 04/04/2023 22:57

I'm 52 and still in band T-shirts. Don't care, I love them.

I don't think Kate looks nice in the photos. She has the skinny figure of a teen but then you see her neck, face and hair and it looks jarring. The all black with sandals and belt makes her legs look so short. I don't think she dresses well and always looks scruffy and dirty.

@LadyVictoriaSponge

My first thought on seeing the picture you posted was wear a bra (or tshirt bra if you have a bra on!).

chevvyroo · 05/04/2023 09:40

Thanks Dave!Grin

Lol lol lol lol!!!! But she is a supermodel? It’s a particularly bad example. Further, I have said several times if you are slim you can get away with much more as you age.

Genuinely never seen Kate Moss look worse than she does in this picture

FrenchandSaunders · 05/04/2023 10:40

I'm 55 and still dress like this!

Cornwallinthesun · 05/04/2023 10:43

I get this too OP. I've worn slip on Vans since I was 16. I used to have them imported as they weren't sold here.

I'm now 36 and I feel silly in them (only started feeling silly in the last 2 weeks). And I'm looking for alternatives.

I used to love dungarees but now feel more "minion" than "30s surfer woman" (which is what I am. I surf and I live near a beach!)

I do want DMs again though, but they ripped my ankles to shreds last time (in 2006!!)

I don’t think I ever looked that beautiful even when I was 19 dressing like a 19 year old!
