Is it time I stopped dressing like a grungy teenager?!

I am definitely a jeans-and-tshirt person and can't see that changing. I don't own any heels and don't plan on buying any! I live in jeans.

If I'm going out somewhere nice then I wear nice boots, I've got some lovely coats and jackets and some smart tops that I like. A couple of skirts for the summer, with ballet pumps or sandals. I go a bit more "hippy" style in warmer weather and have some nice sun dresses etc.

But on a day-to-day basis I live in band t-shirts, converse/vans trainers with a more slouchy pair of jeans. I have done since I was a teen, and it's just "me". When I bought my latest pair of Vans (black & white checkerboard ones) my DH thought it was very funny because his cousin's 15 year old son has some almost the same. It's got me thinking. Am I starting to look a bit silly?? I know, I know, if I like it then I shouldn't care what anyone else thinks. But I have to admit to feeling a bit self conscious now! What do you think??' I'm 33 and have two young DC, and I definitely don't dress like their friends' more glamorous and trendy mums 🙈

I still wear jeans, tshirt and trainers (converse are kept for the summer as my feet get cold). I still wear plaid shirts too. I'm currently sat in an oversized boyfriend cardigan and worn jeans.

Wear what is your style. You'll only feel uncomfortable and there's nothing worse than being uncomfortable.

Jeans and t shirts are ageless surely?

Kdubs1981 · 03/04/2023 18:44

Oh god, at 33 wear what the fuck you like I say! I'm 41 and this still holds true.

Kdubs1981 · 03/04/2023 18:45

You also do not need to wear the mum uniform. I fell into that trap with my first. Dressing more like myself this time

Kdubs1981 · 03/04/2023 18:49

threecupsofteaminimum · 03/04/2023 10:07

The only change you need to make is to ignore your DH.

33 is way young! I didn't even consider changing up my natural style until
I hit 40.

Haven’t read the other responses but honestly yes you are 15 years too old to be dressing like this. Band t shirts are fine but not all the time. Under a blazer with jeans totally fine. Vans I do think tend to look really juvenile anyway so I avoid them. You can certainly dress comfortably in a way that reflects your taste without heels but also without looking like an overgrown teenager. Plenty of lovely boots and flats options now that aren’t trainers. Also unless you are q thin this look is unlikely to be the most flattering thing you can wear. I would mix up the tees with a couple of shirts/blouses or fine knit jumpers. Ditch the hippie look for summer. Get a few long dresses in block colours or striped that you can dress up and down. Hippie look is a bit naff tbqh

Eyerollcentral · 03/04/2023 18:58

Oh and no go slouchy jeans. Go in to m and s and try on their different shapes to see what fit suits you. Straight leg is in and flattering. Slouch jeans absolutely not

FearTheWankingDead · 03/04/2023 19:00

33 is young! Even if you were 73 and wearing a band T-shirt and jeans it’s still all good if it’s makes you happy.

What I was thinking . I can't imagine an age where they wouldn't be appropriate really.

I can't ever imagine having such confident opinions on what other people should wear?!

I just know what usually looks good and slouchy jeans rarely do on people in general but certainly not over 25.

She's 33 not 83! Shirts and blouses? Fine knits? She isn't Kate Middleton who dresses quite boring.

Omfg…you know you can get quite funky blouses, shirts, fine knits that, shock horror, can also be patterned. I also am quite grungy in style. What I am saying is you can incorporate that feel in more grown up and flattering clothing. All saintsy, some mint velvet (although it has gone pretty middle aged). Not every blouse or fine knit is boring. It remains the case that most women over 30 won’t look amazing in a t shirt and defo as you age the quality of fabric and cut matters more than when you are 21.

Mabelface · 03/04/2023 19:52

Despite the above opinion, wear what the fuck you like at whatever age you are. I frankly don't give a fuck what others think of my clothes.

I'm rolling my eyes at your ridiculous comments! I'm 63 and wouldn't be seen dead in a blazer for a start. I can't believe the old fashioned views from people like you, that someone of a certain age must conform to a certain style of dressing - I really thought we had got over that several decades ago.

Incidentally, people usually take me for being 10 years younger than I actually am, so I will continue to dress like "an overgrown teenager" for as long as I like. And you have inspired me to look at getting another pair of Vans!

Blazers are absolutely everywhere and have been for the last four or five years. And loads of women including myself do wear them over band tees w jeans. I’m not old fashioned at all when it comes to dressing, fact of the matter is that most people unless very slim look better with more structure or a blazer that skims over lumps and bumps as they age. The OP is asking if she is too old to keep dressing the way she is, in my opinion yes she is, because what looks good at 15 - 18 rarely looks good on you when you are twice that age. You are maybe thinking of a fitted blazer, the oversized blazer has been a staple for many women 30-50 for the last few years. Anyone can wear what they want but the OP is asking for opinions and mine is yes it’s a look which is too young, especially vans which i don’t think do anyone any favours.

Sorryyoufeelthatway · 03/04/2023 20:34

33 is young, but even if you were 88 just be you. I might be biased as i love a band t ( bands or singers I actually love)

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 03/04/2023 20:44

I turned 50 in February and today wore a tee, jeans, cardigan and trainers. For me the trick is “nicer” versions of the things than I wore when I was younger - my t-shirt was Anine Bing, cardi Cos, jeans Levi’s, trainers Adidas. When I was a student (for example) I’d have worn similar but from much cheaper stores, not as good fabrics etc.

Yes this is what I am saying. Unfortunately as we all age it’s harder to get away with cheaper fabrics - f.e. the primark dress that sat lovely on me at 26 just looks like nothing on me at 41. Nicer fabric, better cuts, incorporating your style in a more adult way means you can still be you.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 03/04/2023 21:09

@Eyerollcentral I’m a lecturer and the girls I teach rock up in all sorts looking absolutely stunning - I feel so nostalgic for those days at times! I’m a hippy 10/12 so I prioritise buying good bottoms that fit well, and also get a lot on Depop and Vinted.

magicthree · 03/04/2023 21:09

Funnily enough @Eyerollcentral, although you seem to think your opinion is the one OP should be taking note of you are actually in the minority. Not everyone is a slave to fashion - I couldn't care less what "everyone" is wearing, if I like it I might wear it, otherwise I stick to what I like. Even at 16 I bought reasonably expensive clothes so it's not a case of wearing cheap stuff now, and I only wear natural fabrics. You will never see me in any kind of blazer btw - I wear a denim jacket.

Omg my friends are absolutely sick of me banging on about Vinted lol! I find it really difficult at the moment to find anything on the high street that doesn’t cost a fortune - most shops are too young for me or in the current styles which look great on young women and generally horrendous on me! The more affordable alternatives for women 35 plus are generally too boring for me. So many clothes shops have gone under too. All my friends my age have the same problem!

DutchCowgirl · 03/04/2023 21:18

I am 43 and we often have “stranger things day” where all family members wear their stranger things hoodies😂
DH and I can dress formal when its necessary… but when it isn’t we just want old band shirts and jeans. Nothing wrong with that. I love it when he wears his Iron maiden shirts, because it reminds me of the time we were younger and fell in love 😍

I’m not a slave to fashion in the slightest. I just know what looks good on me and actually my teen style was exactly like the OP’s, that’s why I am giving her my opinion, which is just that, my opinion. I still skew towards a more grungy style but in a grown up way that flatters my body now as a slim petite woman in my early 40s. Some people don’t care if they look good or not. I do and I love clothes and style, not fashion. Good for you and your denim jacket, you can have blazers and denim (and suede and leather…) jackets you know…
