Has anyone given themselves a shag?

Shaggy2Dope · 29/03/2023 20:02

My hairs been growing out for over a year and I just don't want to go to the hairdressers but it's so boring.

I really want a shag like this, has anyone attempted it themselves??

This thread title is potentially confusing Grin

I think you would need to have layers cut in for that style.

dementedpixie · 29/03/2023 20:06

Thought I was on the Sex board there Grin

Violetcrush · 29/03/2023 20:06

Doesn’t Brad Mondo have a tutorial for this? Might be worth a google!

Aquamarine1029 · 29/03/2023 20:06

Shagging yourself is just a bad idea.

dementedpixie · 29/03/2023 20:07

You'd need wavy hair and layers I would think

Yes, that's what I'm asking, has anyone done this themselves?

I cut layers into DDs hair regularly but doing it on my own head seems much scarier!

don't you gather all your hair forward into a pony tail at the front of your head then cut however many inches off that you want, then its meant to layer it too, but I've never done it myself, but i suppose it wouldn't work if you want to keep the kength

chimayrah1 · 29/03/2023 20:23

I think these haircuts always look awful tbh unless you are fresh out the salon.

That scares me!
I've seen so many videos of that technique going wrong!

Quite agree!!!

Jellykat · 29/03/2023 20:33

Another one who thought this thread should be in a different topic Wink

The cut youre describing is the actual 'MN haircut', if you look in advanced search (put in MN haircut and go back at least 4 years) you'll read about successful and not so successful attempts at it..

HoneyPotBee · 29/03/2023 20:33

i usually let someone else do it.

Ireallydohope · 29/03/2023 20:35

You would need naturally wavy hair for this cut

Really bad title btw Grin

Wildlynx · 29/03/2023 20:43

I've been using the unicorn pony cut reasonably successfully for a few years but I have thick long hair and am lazy low maintenance so not very worried about it if it's not perfect. In fact I took 2 inches off during my team brief (WFH today) this afternoon using that method 🙈
I did separate out the front section as unicorn method can layer a bit too much for my liking.

mathanxiety · 29/03/2023 21:13

There are all sorts of DIY haircut videos on YouTube. That cut is absolutely doable. See 'wolf cut'.

Just don't type 'How to give myself a shag' in your search bar...

Sparkletastic · 29/03/2023 21:20

This was called the 'Mumsnet haircut' back in the day. Everyone had a go. Mine was quite successful but I have curly forgiving hair.

Rainraingoaway21 · 29/03/2023 21:25

Watch YouTube videos using the crea clip, I brought the dupe version off amazon for a fiver and works great!

mathanxiety · 30/03/2023 02:55

if you decide to go for it,buy yourself the sharpest hair scissors you can find. Research scissors before you buy. You will get poor results from scissors that are poor quality.

iamcatz · 30/03/2023 03:06

I haven't cut a shag but I occasionally cut my own after a few YT tutorials.

lol I tried this once and it didn't go well. I let it grow out for a while then went to the hairdressers. He was brushing my hair and went "who cut this?!" with a horrified look. And I lied and told him it was my friend who was training to be a hairdresser. He went "I don't want to be mean but I think she should give up" GrinGrinGrin

L.o.l
I 👏 clicked on to this somewhat bemused wondering on 🌎 earth was shagging yourself entailed 😁

ProstituteHair · 30/03/2023 06:34

Yes! About 15 years ago, before ticktock trends were a thing!

I just chopped away. I do have wavy hair though. I think you'll struggle with straight hair and the potential for error is much greater.

Here's me self-shag!

Google Wolf Cut or Butterfly Cut.
