Going grey in your late 30s

PinotNoir1 · 26/03/2023 15:39

I'm late 30s and thinking of just letting my natural colour come out now as so fed up of dyeing. It's so expensive in the salon now and I'm rubbish at doing box dye.

Is there anyone that can share success stories and positives of doing so? Thanks!

I'm 39 and am also just letting it go now, solidarity. My hair is in much better condition for not dyeing it

My best friend has grown out her grey hair in her late 30's (now 39) and looks amazing. However, hers is a real salt and pepper grey - so it basically looks like she has grey highlights. It's beautiful and really suits her.

I on the other hand would have patches of totally white hair, especially around my face which completely washes me out. So I have chosen to stay blonde for the time being. But if my grey was like hers I probably would do it.

I say go for it and see how you feel in a few months - you can always dye it again if you don't like it.
One tip I would give is to make sure your hair has a decent cut and is styled well, makes a huge difference.

I let my natural colour come through when I was 38, and at the time I was absolutely white around my face with a good percentage of grey elsewhere. I am told all the time how fab my hair looks, often asked if it is my natural hair or dyed this way, and I have zero regrets. I'm 50 now and pretty much all white or silver with long hair

NemoandDoris · 26/03/2023 15:50

As I have patchy grey coverage and would look like a mutant racoon if I let them come through I DIY dye my hair with esalon at home. They have a pretty good colour match.

@Sunflowersinthewind the condition getting better is a massive pro for doing it!

I also posted a similar post. Desperately want to stop bleaching mine but the greys being on show worries me - I'm only late 30s. I don't want greys on show

Bubblesdublin · 26/03/2023 16:06

I am 39 and have no grey hair yet. But 1 friend who does is not dying and looks ok. Personally I will dye when I do get them.

PinotNoir1 · 26/03/2023 16:27

Thanks for all your a input so far. It really is personal choice isn't it.

For me I got my first grey hairs early 20s. My hair is in rubbish condition and we I said it's a faff doing it myself and I miss bits as well 🤦🏻‍♀️

I might try and wait it out a bit longer between dyes and take it slowly from there. My hair is quite dark so is noticeable but as another poster said its not all on the top it's more the sides and underneath that is notifiable if I have my hair up etc

I started going grey in my 20s. I never dyed it, I'm 59 now, silvery grey, and get loads of compliments. I've always loved my grey hair.

PinotNoir1 · 26/03/2023 16:30

Just been googling and love the colour "mushroom brown" never heard of it before. Might try this colour first before I breve it 🤔

I was very dark before btw

WeAreTheHeroes · 26/03/2023 16:34

I wish I'd stopped colouring mine sooner - I spent years covering the rapidly revealed roots as I was naturally very dark and my hair grows quickly. The grey suits me better and the no messy maintenance of colour is a game-changer.

Emilyanna · 26/03/2023 16:36

Also started going grey early twenties, but only a handful of greys, until... postpartum hair regrowth... hellooooo greys! Haven't ever dyed it, and now there are loads I'm waiting for them to grow to full length before I decide whether to definitely keep it natural. I'm probably too lazy to dye, plus also have easily damaged hair and would worry that it will get thin if I regularly dye it for years. So I'm leaning towards embracing the natural. I'm very dark haired with greys throughout but more at the front I'd say. It looks fine.
I also feel kind of unreasonably brave in styling it out when so many people are terrified to look even a teeny bit old. My inner feminist says that society doesn't expect men to dye their greys, so why the heck should I?

Emilyanna · 26/03/2023 16:38

I'm 36 btw!

PinotNoir1 · 26/03/2023 16:51

Does anyone feel brave enough to post a pic of the growth? Understand if not I'm just feeling very inspired by you lovely ladies!

Very striking, grey or white hair with face of under 60!

You'll all look fab ♥️♥️

snackcurator · 26/03/2023 17:04

I'm late thirties and going grey. I wish it would go quicker as I've got loads of strands of grey throughout rather than blocks of grey if that makes sense. I also have curly hair so don't want to dye it as I prefer to use curly girl friendly products in my hair. I'm looking forward to it. I have been styling my hair to show off the more grey areas, at the temples mostly.

I'd love it if mine looked like this and went mostly grey. Instead I just have a scattering.

I let mine grow out at 43 due to dye allergies. Here is a picture of the colour. I wish I could show you it with my actual face for ‘context’ but I am unable

Meant to add, it’s so freeing. And cheaper!😂

YouNeverCanTellWithBees · 26/03/2023 21:04

Mine looks terrible grey so I'll continue to dye it. I'm late 30s

VerityUnreasonble · 26/03/2023 21:22

I don't colour my hair, I have a random scatter of white/ grey bits in amongst the general dirty blonde colour. I'm just leaving it to its own devices and seeing what happens (I'm not a very polished person though!)
