Is White Stuff in trouble?

They have a sale of 60% off mainly summery clothes. very early for a sale.

I gave up buying things from them a few years ago as the quality seemed to decline and it all became very sludgy colours and unflattering prints.

I just think it has a very 'studenty' look and feel, and the only adult women I know who love it all seem to be in education, as primary teachers

I don’t think any student in their right mind wears White Stuff. It’s mainly over 35’s

Exactly, it's middle aged women who wear it.

EVHead · 25/03/2023 16:38

Like Fatface and Boden, it’s all become meh. At ridiculous prices.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 25/03/2023 16:43

I don’t like White Stuff. It’s twee and dated and the quality is shit.

FF is 5% better.

l gave up on Biden years ago.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 25/03/2023 16:46

Boden!

Ilooklikesusiedent · 25/03/2023 16:47

I hope they don't go under. I don't buy much in there because I'm 5ft 2 with barely any boobage BUT I love their shops. They're very attractive and pretty on the High Street.

Also their fluffy socks are AMAZING for my frozen raynauds feet!!

My favourite ever brogues were from in there too! Tan with mint green laces and purple soles 😍

I meant older women who once were students (like some primary school teachers.)

No offence to teachers, but in my road the women who wear a lot of WS are teachers (of younger children.) Local primary school is full of the WS look.

White Stuff used to be my favourite shop. I always used to find several things in there each visit.
But I agree now, it looks dreary. I remember it’s cool surfer vibes and miss it.

Same. It's just another dreary Fat Face style mumsy shop. Used to shop there a lot.

My White Stuff salopettes from 25 years ago are still going strong though.

I'm fat and over 50 and wear a lot of WS, FateFace and Seasalt (bit of Joules & Boden)

I do think the quality has gone down in recent years - but they sell stuff I like in my size and there is not a lot to choose from.

I find most plus size clothing ugly and made of nasty shiny fabrics. or they think because you are fat you want a-symmetric hems or animal print or diamente bits...

I really hope White Stuff isn't going under - but I do regard it like Fat Face and one of those shops that you nearly always buy sale stuff...

(I am not a teacher)

I'm 40 and have liked WS for nearly 10 years. As with everything you just need to choose the right items from their huge range. I think that's one of the problems with so many brands actually, they bring out a 100 new tops every season instead of just concentrating on 30 really well designed, versatile pieces.

I've noticed lots of clothing brands discounting significantly in the past year or so. A bit of a vicious circle for them as it puts people off buying at full price. I'm not going to spend £65 on a dress if I can get it for £39 in a few weeks with every size still in stock.

Coastalvenues · 25/03/2023 19:20

It's gone dull it has to be said

That's very true, loads of places are doing the same.

Jellykat · 25/03/2023 19:27

The prints are so dowdy these days, and knitwear bobbles so quickly.. and whats with the huge necklines? I'd like a bit of a warm neck area on a wool jumper. I wouldnt miss them anymore.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 25/03/2023 19:29

Hey! I’m an older woman who was once a student. I’m 59. Did my degree in fashion though. Maybe that’s why l don’t like it😊

whatisforteamum · 25/03/2023 19:54

It used to be different and colourful.Mostly it is frumpy and overpriced now.Only bought one thing since lockdown.
Fat face Breton s are ok in the sale.I find their tops too boxy otherwise.
Crew clothing is also in my town and some of the jumpers are a bit more colourful and fun.

Fluffodils · 25/03/2023 20:55

Oooh nice shirts

woodhill · 25/03/2023 21:05

Yes the shirts are great.

I haven't seen any other company make similar ones

Useful for work

stringbean · 25/03/2023 21:52

Agree about the tops being too short: never buy anything there for myself, but I buy shirts there for dh. Generally they're decent quality and have lasted well. Women's stuff is a bit like Boden and Joules in that you can spot it a mile off.

Riverlee · 25/03/2023 21:59

i have a couple of lovely jumpers from them. However, dh wanted to buy some shorts from there last year and I stopped him. If I remember, they cost £50 in there. I got two for that price in Next.

Mykittensmittens · 25/03/2023 22:20

I have lots from there but I don’t love the items like I used to - more now it’s because I’d struggle to find an alternative.

15 years ago the prints were unique - i have a striped tee that if you looked carefully there were little windmills in each stripe. I had a grey cardigan with pots of flowers out of the pockets. And really lovely jersey dresses, non-waisted, with pockets, that didn’t bag or stretch but still had lovely prints.

now it’s just a bit - weird! Necklines very high, or wide, and dresses with waists but the whole dress is designed for 5ft10 which means nothing sits properly.

jewellery was also fun, now it’s just bloody extortionate (£25+ for a cord necklace with some wooden beads??)

I miss it, but equally don’t want it to go!

woodhill · 26/03/2023 14:34

I find the waists very short and could do with longer tops.

I think they used to be much nicer but everything is a bit like that nowadays

Netcam · 26/03/2023 14:47

I used to love them about 10 years ago. Ordered a load of things recently to try having not bought anything for years from there and returned the whole lot. Quality and fit were terrible. They used to have nice fitted 100% cotton dresses with interesting, unusual prints and colours. The prints are now really frumpy, floral and sack-like, mainly made of viscose.

Teatime55 · 26/03/2023 14:49

I looked at the sale - it’s the same stuff as months ago. They even have Christmas chocolates on there they haven’t reduced the price of again since January 😂
