School fundraising dinner and 'smart' dress code

What would you consider to be 'smart' dress code for an evening event at my child's school?

I'm familiar with casual, smart casual, lounge suit, formal or fancy dress, but 'smart'????

I [clearly] don't go to formal events very often, so if anyone can help I'd appreciate it.

I’m guessing if they meant ‘black tie’ the invitation would have specified that - so I assume lounge suits for men and something pretty for the ladies. Relative expense dependent on status as above!
