What is this style? I love it!

I see it, or variations of it in a lot of the Japanese films/youtubes I watch, it is a loose yet tidy style, which looks so very comfortable!

It isn't wacky like Gudrun Sjoden and rarely sports a pattern, but there seems to be emphasis on texture and natural fibres.
What i can't get my mind around is why I always look/feel weird in loose clothing myself. I am 5ft5 and slender, not much in the boob dept and have a fairly simple look that should suit these clothes.
So if a similarly sized/build of Japanese or Korean woman makes this style look lovely, where am i going wrong? Grin

People in the west often say oooh you have to be tall to pull it off, but this obviously isn't at all true.

I would love to include more pieces like this in my wardrobe!
Maybe I am so used to skin tight clothes such as leggings and skinny jeans over the years that my mind can't switch.

Any shop recommendations would be appreciated.

I agree. In real life that will be thin and nasty

As opposed to £300 offerings on some of the other links? Which are basically a sack ...

That Etsy article is a linen cotton mix and the reviews are good. 2,600 at almost 5 stars. Personally i don't boggle at 50 quid for a long line cotton shirt dress but there you are.

yogaretreat · 23/03/2023 14:50

I love this style too. I wear loads of loose styles now, having lived in tight corporate dresses in my twenties. I am tall but I actually think it suits petite women most. Muji is great. I wear loose pants from buddha pants too

Laiste · 23/03/2023 14:54

Maybe half of it is a confidence thing.

Once you're in it and happy and used to the shapes it just starts to suit you.

I think high summer is a good time to begin. Or travelling in hot countries. When you're trying to cover up and stay cool. Loos cotton trousers and lovely lose white cotton shirts. Then the sun goes in and we're back in our usual stuff - but maybe try and stick with the unstructured vibe right into Autumn, with some heavier fabrics and it might start to feel like 'you'?

Mmm, I agree....I do believe there's a whiff of condescending superiority on these boards whenever this subject pops up. I'm not sure I would pay upwards of £300 for any single clothing item that wasn't either outerwear or footwear.

Describing people's clothing tastes or options as 'cheap and nasty' doesn't sit well with me, neither, considering how many people are struggling to pay for basic necessities these days. And if I am able to toss a few hundred around on ethically sound pantaloons, I probably won't boast shout it from a hilltop, either Grin

I think you need long limbs
I'm 5 8 and though I have boobs it works on me because I have long arms and legs with fine ankles and wrists.

Laiste · 23/03/2023 14:57

Now there's a very 2023 aspiration* *😂

I think I agree with this, it does really suit the more petite frame. I see a lot of (not remotely tall) Japanese tourists via my work and this style is quite a thing. Always an inspiration.

I'm judging it by a similar linen cross back apron I bought on Etsy at around that price. Looked lovely in the picture.

In reality it was thin and nasty- particularly compared to a slightly more expensive version from a UK manufacturer.

I do wonder why this particular style seems to provoke derision from some......like the Toast threads of old.

I've not really come across that- it's a very popular look where I live and I see it as quite high status- lots of women who used to be bankers and city lawyers now trying their hand at a Hampstead novel in between PT sessions, dressing in a less corporate, more boho way. Simple, very well-cut, neutral colours, relies on being very slim.

Try Googling “lagenlook” OP.

Came here to say this - I love it!

Interesting, similar to something I recently read on another thread regarding 'status' and natural hair texture.
I have noticed this, too. I live in a somewhat crunchy, earthy (not particularly wealthy) tourist area and this is definitely something I see a lot.

I am very slim but can feel somewhat overwhelmed with certain shapes, yet my old friend, around 5ft and overweight/large boobs looks exquisite in this style. It definitely depends upon the person. She's an architect yet isn't purchasing particularly expensive items. Her very being exudes this look, she positively shines in it. So I suppose I would say it's how we carry it, not necessarily what shape we are.

There's a lot to this, definitely.

Forgotten tribes

I think Lagenlook is just a touch too layered for me. It is definitely similar though.

Can anyone recommend a decent place to find some good linen trousers? I much prefer mid rise to high.
Toast and Poetry price range is fine although not prepared to go higher.
I keep hearing that Toast and Poetry add too much fabric to the crotch area of their trousers which puts me off a little. I do have some slim cords from Toast which are lovely, but do have a sort of 'baggy nappy' effect on the arse Grin

@NatashaDancing , I found a lovely cross-back apron in excellent condition in a local charity shop for £2. nice quality fabric and well made. Looked new.

A few more examples of styles that i adore! The Birkin one especially. I miss being able to source looser, scoop tops and fine knit longer cardigans. Everything is so boxy now.

Oska have great wide-legged linen trousers- maybe ebay?

Resurrecting this thread - I've been watching Beef on Netflix and the main character, Amy, exemplifies this look beautifully. I'm inspired!!

Good Heavens. That looks like it could be a scene from a peaceful bit of a movie set during the Vietnam War - next shot will be Robert Downey Jnr dangling from a helicopter.
