I see it, or variations of it in a lot of the Japanese films/youtubes I watch, it is a loose yet tidy style, which looks so very comfortable!

It isn't wacky like Gudrun Sjoden and rarely sports a pattern, but there seems to be emphasis on texture and natural fibres.
What i can't get my mind around is why I always look/feel weird in loose clothing myself. I am 5ft5 and slender, not much in the boob dept and have a fairly simple look that should suit these clothes.
So if a similarly sized/build of Japanese or Korean woman makes this style look lovely, where am i going wrong? Grin

People in the west often say oooh you have to be tall to pull it off, but this obviously isn't at all true.

I would love to include more pieces like this in my wardrobe!
Maybe I am so used to skin tight clothes such as leggings and skinny jeans over the years that my mind can't switch.

Any shop recommendations would be appreciated.

I am a similar size OP and can't pull this off. I have come to the conclusion that this is because I am too scruffy with messy hair and the unstructured clothes amplify the effect. I also struggle with linen as I don't iron. Love the look though!

I am quite pale with rosy cheeks and ash blond hair, I have wondered if my head is the issue rather than my body Grin I sometimes think we overlook what suits our faces and hair when we choose clothes.
I still think being so familiar with slimmer cut clothes is the main issue. If we were all more used to this silhouette it might seem easier.

I don't think the clothes I have linked are structured though, more slouchy and soft. I do prefer flowing lines to boxy shapes, which it easily tweakable. I'm also not fond of all the square, cropped knits in the stores this past few years. I love longer length jumpers and cardigans.

The clothes in photos one and three are structured though- Certainly in regards to how they are cut, if cut well it will give the illusion that the clothes are flowing and tapering in all the right places and appear flattering. Unstructured will just look baggy and shapeless.
It's a great look, effortless and chic, but in reality probably not as effortless as it appears.

LawksaMercyMissus · 22/03/2023 19:32

@TheMatisseStories you're right about having to consider faces and hair. I'm tall but this look doesn't work on me, partly because I've got big boobs but also because combined with my glasses, it makes me look like a university lecturer!

OrangeKnot · 22/03/2023 19:36

Oska might have some styles you like, Studio Nicholson too. Envoy of Belfast is worth a punt, and Epitome of Edinburgh. I love this look, but be warned the good stuff doesn’t come cheap. You need really good tailoring.

TheMatisseStories · 22/03/2023 19:50

some great suggestions, am off for a look, thank you!

Why not take gentle steps towards it? Get some wide-leg jeans or trousers and wear with a fitted top and a long cardigan. Then work up to the baggy top half too. Retrain your eye - look up enough wide-leg trousers on insta and your feed will start spamming you with images of them and they’ll look normal in no time. In any case they are all over the shops so it shouldn’t be hard to see examples.

AnyFucker · 22/03/2023 21:22

I love this look

LadyRoughDiamond · 22/03/2023 21:59

I love this look OP and have been moving a bit in this direction too. I’m buying lots at Cos - especially trousers and dresses. I’ve also found a few bits at Uniqlo and Muji. Toast is great but £££ ( worth checking out the sale) and I’ve been searching out Margaret Howell bits secondhand (Vinted).
Like you, I have no idea what this look is called and would like to be able to search it.

BluebellBlueballs · 22/03/2023 22:01

I'd look like the big top at the circus in some of these.
Definitely designed with slender frames in mind although by all means can be worn by anyone who wants to

TheChosenTwo · 22/03/2023 22:03

Woah, the first one sort of looks like what I might shuffle about the house in on a Sunday with the hangover of doom!! It’s not what I would personally be aspiring to being seen in public wearing 🙈
the bookshop one looks okay and the third is not for me either.
However, I always say this on these threads, it would be really boring if we all liked the same things and I’m a big believer in wearing what you feel comfortable and makes you feel happy!

Augend23 · 22/03/2023 22:07

Having said you're pale with rosy cheeks and ash blond hair, do you think it's maybe the colour ways that you're trying to purchase? I would tend to think that the kind of muted greys etc that one might imagine the clothes in might not suit your colouring as well as perhaps light but maybe less muted colours would? Obviously I haven't seen you but maybe it would be worth trying something of that style in a different colour from the ones you are initially imagining?

I’m with you in the circus tent, @Laiste !!

A flat chest and preferably straight hips are needed to really pull off this look, sadly for me.

2pointfourmonkeys · 22/03/2023 23:01

I'm a similar frame to you and have struggled with lots of the looser fitting trends over the years.

For me i have found i need the sensation of close fitting clothes, these days I often wear a tight vest and leggings or shorts under looser clothing. It somehow seems to shift how confident i feel in an item of clothing.

TheMatisseStories · 22/03/2023 23:11

Thanks you lot, some great ideas and suggestions.

I do think i need to review the colours, but i stand by my conclusion that i am so used to living in a world of tight fitting clothes that this feels ominous, different.
I do so love it, and it feels very like me. I will take a few tentative steps, and keep within my preferred colours - muted paler tones.

As i have grown older (am 49) i have become less and less interested in flattering my 'figure'. I want to look good but not interested in showing attributes off. So even though I have good legs, I dont like the types of clothing that show them off. I honestly want to just waft through life with lovely fabrics and comfort, and let peopel take me as i am.

MysteryBelle · 22/03/2023 23:32

Makes the legs look very short even on tall skinny models, look at the pictures. I think it looks horrendous. Shapeless. Not structured or tidy at all. Might look a tiny bit like that because of the monochromatic colour scheme.

It does look comfortable though and for me, comfort is important. I just don’t like this particular look. It’s another way of wearing a mumu or sweatpants or house dress and calling it trendy.

MysteryBelle · 22/03/2023 23:34

Just saw your update. You have some good points there. I like the paler softer colours too.

mightymam · 23/03/2023 00:07

It's called 'lagenlook' (but a little less extreme based on the pics you've shared!). Sahara, Muji, Masai, Poetry, Cos, Oska are my go to brands for a similar look.

Findyourneutralspace · 23/03/2023 01:01

Try Forgotten Tribes

magicthree · 23/03/2023 01:02

Try Etsy OP. There are a lot of linen clothes for sale there which are similar to those in your photos.

unclebuck · 23/03/2023 01:05

Issy Miyake on ebay :)

viques · 23/03/2023 01:11

If you have deep pockets and are near Whitstable or sandwich then try the Carole Ridley shops , beautifully curated collection of clothes I think you will love.
