I see it, or variations of it in a lot of the Japanese films/youtubes I watch, it is a loose yet tidy style, which looks so very comfortable!

It isn't wacky like Gudrun Sjoden and rarely sports a pattern, but there seems to be emphasis on texture and natural fibres.
What i can't get my mind around is why I always look/feel weird in loose clothing myself. I am 5ft5 and slender, not much in the boob dept and have a fairly simple look that should suit these clothes.
So if a similarly sized/build of Japanese or Korean woman makes this style look lovely, where am i going wrong? Grin

People in the west often say oooh you have to be tall to pull it off, but this obviously isn't at all true.

I would love to include more pieces like this in my wardrobe!
Maybe I am so used to skin tight clothes such as leggings and skinny jeans over the years that my mind can't switch.

Any shop recommendations would be appreciated.

I love the idea of looser, flowing shapes. But my boobs turn the look into ''circus tent'' on me 🙄

If you are low on boob and yet still feel you're not pulling off the look, could it be you have wide shoulders? Perhaps you need a longer line, less boxy shape?

I think the outfit on the woman in the book shop would be much easier to pull off than the one in the biggest pic. There are some nice pieces here:

Have a look over at Muji. I'm sure they still do simple shapes and colours. The few pieces I've had have always lasted well.

Poetry use a lot of linen and cotton and have similar trousers. Not sure what that style is called.

Oh my god sorry 😂

MN server gone mad.

This is structured Japanese minimalism, I think? Basically Muji (or some Uniqlo). Loose layers; natural fibres; clean structure; wide leg trousers or a-line/loose skirts and dresses; muted colours (but can get away with some stripes or plaid); plain comfortable shoes; smart socks.

It looks simple but the loose flowing parts need to be made of proper cottons and linens; and the tailored parts like trousers need to be well-cut.

I love it too. I think far eastern origin women have quite a delicate build. I could look a bit clown-like because I have an angular shape.
If you wear it, just hold your head up high and own the look.

Natural Kei.

It's a great look but you need to have a slim frame and some height to pull it off

Logicoutofthewindow · 22/03/2023 15:04

Slim frame, no boobs at all and some height to look good. That's why it is almost always shown on 6' stick thin models. Swamps short people, looks awful on fatties

When done properly, it doesn't. I've been to Japan several times, and this look is extremely popular. Japanese women make it look really good as they get the proportions right to suit their height and size.

For another take on this, try looking up the Monty Don thread on here from ages ago. Lots of brands suggested

SurferRona · 22/03/2023 15:54

Try Googling “lagenlook” OP.

specialkallday · 22/03/2023 15:54

Forgotten Tribes has some lovely pieces in this kind of style. Nice and cheap too!

Indeed. I am slim, with small boobs and pretty tall and I can wear these sorts of clothes. I have many shapeless, long dresses, long line cardigans and loose fitting trousers. I get quite a few bits from Uniqlo.

TheMatisseStories · 22/03/2023 18:11

Thanks so much for the replies and links!

I disagree that you need to be tall though!, I have no idea why one would have to be if the clothing is in proportion.
And especially considering Japanese minimalism, are they all 6 foot tall? This is a very korean/Japanese look to my mind and so I would imagine most of these styles are created with shorter statures in mind.

Then again I have never understood the western view that clothes only suit extremely tall people. Surely it is just a product of the fashion industry and familiarity with sky high models.

I have a narrow frame and small bone structure and am average height so no idea why I can't seem to pull it off. I do think it's unfamiliarity though as i am so used to a more fitted silhouette.

I am a similar size OP and can't pull this off. I have come to the conclusion that this is because I am too scruffy with messy hair and the unstructured clothes amplify the effect. I also struggle with linen as I don't iron. Love the look though!

I was going to suggest Forgotten Tribes too - if you aren't sure look at second bits on ebay.
