I’m starting from scratch as I don’t wear much make up day to day. I’ve added a picture (please ignore the grey in my hair - my appointment for colour is tomorrow!). I am 42 with pretty good skin I think.

What low to mid price basics would you recommend? What would suit my colouring? I don’t mind splashing out on something if it’s really worth it. What sort of routine do I need? I’m pretty good with my skincare, but just need make up tips!

I’d go with a bit of concealer for under eyes and around the nostrils and and blemishes. Then a cream blush. Eye brow gel and mascara

concealer- love no17- cheap and amazing consistency
blush- huda beauty has a nice one
brow gel- gimme brow benefit
mascara- Lancôme definicals/hypnose
loose powder- laura mercier translucent powder

I’d add in a Clinique chubby stick eye cream for “more”

I don’t think you need any foundation, your skin is lovely! SPF every single day though if you don’t already. If you wanted some sort of base you could use tinted moisturiser or a cc/bb cream.

apply a cream blush high up on your cheekbone to lift your face.

You might want a tiny bit of colour corrector and a little concealer under the eyes and in the corners/creases of your nose to eliminate the tiny bit of redness and give you a overall more polished look - a brown eyeliner on your top lid, smudged out to look softer would look lovely. If you looking for something a little fancier I think a bit of gold shimmer on your lid would look great against your skin tone, matched with some gold tones highlighter in the very tops of your cheekbones and the middle of your nose.

Contour can lift and change the shape of your face; but this depends on what you do and don’t like about your face or what you’d like to change, if anything?

You lip shape and colour is lovely too, I think all you need there is a bit of gloss for day-to-day wear, maybe a nice lip liner to emphasise your Cupid’s bow if you’re going out-out.

Overall, you look gorgeous without make up,

No make up advice as I'm rubbish at it myself but just wanted to say Wow, you are really stunning ♥

Thank you - I will start making a list! If there are any specific products you’d recommend- let me know.

I generally stick to high street make up but products are totally dependant on skin type in my opinion.
But my go to products are:
maybelline fit me foundation and concealer, they’re a lovely finish, don’t feel tacky once dry and you can really play with the coverage as it’s buildable.

For lips/cheeks I absolutely love the benefit lol and cheek tint - but it’s pricey (for me) so if it’s everyday wear I tend to use a high street alternative (Barry m do a lip and cheek tint cream)

for lip gloss I used a tint lip balm from paw paw.

eyebrows pen from NYX, absolutely amazing, super fine tip and decent non-orangey colour.

I’m going to buy a few bits and maybe post back with an update if I’m feeling brave! I’ve used benetint before and I did like it.

Rimmel BB Cream in Medium would give you a bit of coverage but still would look ultra natural - if you wanted to even things out a bit. I honestly don't think you need it though, you have very clear looking, lovely skin. I honestly wouldn't put concealor or powder on it, even though the Mercier powder is lovely - a BB cream will be all you need.

Elf monochromatic lip, eye and cheek stick in glistening peach or glimmering guava would look great on you. Great for days when you don't want to faff and gives a nice pulled together look. If you want to splurge a bit more Stila do a convertible colour that does the same thing, it comes in a compact and I think the shade Lilium would be good on you. If I remember correctly, that one has a peachy warmth to it.

As someone else said, a brown mascara and perhaps a hint of brown kohl. Rimmel kohl is nice, or for higher end, I'd personally recommend MAC. Max Factor do nice brown black mascaras.

For brows, if you want to splurge I'd recommend Glossier Boy Brow in either a tint of your choice - brown would be good, depending on your preference, or the clear version.

For a cheaper brow fix L'Oreal do a nice Brow shaping and plumping/ fixing gel - again brown might be nice here.

If you want to add a touch of highlight Vita liberata do a nice liquid one, it's called Luminosity - get the golden version.

That's all I'd recommend honestly, you're naturally gorgeous, so you only need a light touch to enhance.

You are beautiful without makeup. Don't feel pressure to use it unless you really want to, some lucky people just don't need it and you are one of them!

I think Fenty is good for concealer in the widest range of skin tones.

Clinique power lash mascara never lets me down

Estee lauder double ended brow pencil/powder thing is great and easy to use

I don't think you need much else

JaneAustenshandbag · 23/03/2023 16:36

So I’ve had a go - just been to the hairdresser too. I put a bit of foundation mixed with moisturiser on, concealer under the eyes and a benefit bronzer. Rimmel blush and gold eyeshadow. Mascara (just a cheap rimmel one - but there’s hardly any left so need to get a new one!)
Oh and a bright pink Lancôme gloss that I’ve had for ages and not used. Might be a bit much.

That looks great! Very everyday-polished 🤭 I actually really love the pink gloss too, the colour really compliments your skin tone!

If you wanted your eyes to pop a bit more I think a brown eyeliner on the top would look lovely, but it’s not needed.

how do you feel?

JaneAustenshandbag · 23/03/2023 19:12

I feel good - I think I want a better mascara, brown liner and maybe a brow gel but not much more.
