Question for anyone with a hair system

I have been wearing a hair system for the last couple of years which has really helped mask the massive hair loss I've had because of the menopause.

My issue is that I can never make them last. They seem to dry out so quickly and they are expensive to replace. Mine are like straw after just two months - when I wake up I look like a scarecow and it feels horrible to the touch. I take so much care; using the brands the salon recommends (Goldwell - not that impressed with them though), leaving my hair to dry out naturally before styling, only washing once a week, only using minimal heat, I have silk pillow cases etc.

What advice can you give to extend it's shelf life? I'd like to try and make mine last 5 months or so.

Sorry - but what is a hair system?

It's like a small hair piece that is woven in with your natural hair - worn by people who have thinning hair, alopecia, on chemo etc. They can be made of human or synethic hair. Mine is human hair.
