Take away all the net.

GayforMoleman · 09/03/2023 23:23

I'm "goth" and think that would look frumpy on most due to the cut and style of it. Fuck everyone who just dismissed it as "goth" or made shitty Halloween or Addams family references though, stuff like this can be unflattering on anyone, no need to be a dick about what you negatively associate it with.

What about jjshouse.com they have some lovely colorful dresses.

Sorry but they are fussy and boring. I don't think this dress is suitable for a wedding but it's much nicer than this lot.

StephenDedalus · 10/03/2023 07:42

OP there are some very dull, parochial opinions on this thread & some absolutely hideous 'alternatives' shown!

It's utter nonsense that black can't be worn to a wedding & that every woman must be frou frou'd up in bright garish colours.

I've attended many weddings & have frequently worn black. And noone threw stones or barred me from entering. Or mistook the entire event for a funeral etc etc

The dress you posted is not particularly my taste but I can see how it could work.

Wedding threads are generally bonkers on here & when you add it up with the equal number of threads about the many bizzare approaches to wedding receptions it makes all the angst over the 'rules of how to dress' even stranger!

Guavafish1 · 10/03/2023 07:45

It's nice; but not sure how the neck frill would look in real life

featheryfancy · 10/03/2023 08:10

Against the grain it seems but I love it. Unfortunately, not for a Mediterranean wedding in black though

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 10/03/2023 08:11

Is it your ex husbands wedding and you want to make a point?

Salacia · 10/03/2023 08:40

I absolutely love it (and would/have worn black to a wedding, the only colour I avoid is white) but I’m presuming if it’s in the med it might be a little warm and it doesn’t look like it would be the most comfortable thing to wear? Pale me is wondering how I’d suncream under the net but you may not have that problem…I’m also not sure about cultural associations of black at a wedding where you’re going so might be worth checking that.

The dress gives Vampire’s Wife vibes so you could look there (although ££££). Alternate places (at a lower budget) -
Sister Jane
Rixo
Wolf & Badger

www.coastfashion.com/embroidered-long-sleeve-maxi-dress/ACC99223.html

How about this if you’re looking for long and lacy? It comes in lots of colours - I picked teal because it suits everyone but there’s lots to choose from.

This is much better :)

Ticktocktimebomb · 09/03/2023 19:59

Is it the colour, or the style that you like in your dress? This one from mint velvet is dark but is more what I imagine for a wedding in the med

Mint velvet

This is lovely too

Each to their own but that Coast dress is a fright- it manages to be dull and fussy at the same time.

StephenDedalus · 10/03/2023 11:21

I totally agree @NatashaDancing ! That Coast dress is awful.

At least some of them will have internally raised an eyebrow or wondered if you were trying to make a point, even if they were too polite to say so.

Black can be okay, if there are other colours in the outfit, for example. But in general, an all black dress at a wedding goes against our cultural norms in the UK.

StephenDedalus · 10/03/2023 11:26

@LookingOldTheseDays who said I am in the UK?
Seriously - do you all raise 'an internal eyebrow' at the many, many men who wear black suits to weddings?
And what 'point' would I be making by wearing black?
This is exactly what I mean - it's so arbitrary and bizzare!
My mother wore black to both my wedding and my sisters and she LOVES our husbands! I wore black as bridesmaid for my sister...
WE looked elegant and fabulous! And if someone was 'inwardly judging <who knows for what??> well....that's on them imo

I have never worn a pastel colour to a wedding

Good for Halloween.

Men tend to wear grey or navy at weddings, not black suits. Black suits are generally worn for funerals.

MN is a UK website, so it can hardly be a surprise that people will apply UK cultural norms.

LookingOldTheseDays · 10/03/2023 11:52

And I also don't wear pastels - pastels aren't the only non-black colour!

LlynTegid · 10/03/2023 12:31

I think you've made the right decision OP, good luck in finding something and I hope the wedding is a lovely occasion.

StephenDedalus · 10/03/2023 12:32

Lots of men wear black to weddings without a raised eyebrow.
And you still haven't said what 'point' you would assume I am making if I wore black to a wedding

They do not. In the UK, men wear navy, great, charcoal, pinstriped, brown or tweed suits to weddings. Black suits, and dresses, are for funerals.

Pileofjeans · 10/03/2023 12:45

I've posted an outfit I wanted to wear to a wedding on here before asking for shoe and bag recommendations and got a lot of raised eyebrows. It was a great dress and I looked great even if I do say so myself Grin Too much for most of Mumsnet I think as it wasn't a floral or lacy number.

The Coast and Mint Velvet dresses are very very boring and pedestrian and not much of an improvement in what you could pick up in a supermarket.

If you're looking for something actually stylish yours wins op.

No one (who matters) thinks any less of anyone wearing black to a wedding. I'd probably wear that dress with flat pointy hot pink shoes and hair scraped back in a low pony tail.

Thanks to a pp for the Sister Jane recommendation - new to me and I like it!!

lmnabc · 10/03/2023 12:49

OP I absolutely love the dress but as others have said, not for a wedding

Oriunda · 10/03/2023 12:57

More info needed. What country, and what time is wedding? In Italy, weddings usually take place late due to the heat (where we are, anyway) and black evening wear is di rigeur. Not this dress though ….too many ruffles etc.

No, they really don't.

If I were raising an inward eyebrow it would be at a brown or tweed suit at a wedding , not a black suit.

I don't see the slightest problem with a black lounge suit as long as it's not with a black tie.
