Dermatica and the peeling, advice please

I've been using Dermatica for 3 months for uneven skin tone and age spots (I'm 54).The results have been great so far, my skin is so smooth and even. But the peeling is ongoing, I've just received another bottle and it's the same prescription with 0.05% tretoinin. I'm applying every 3 days otherwise my skin peels like crazy.

Do I continue with every 3rd day or use daily to get the peeling out of the way.

What's people's opinions on Dermatica, is there better out there?

I think Dermatica is great. I’d be trying to increase frequency but maybe wait for this really cold weather to pass (if in UK). Not sure what your routine is but you could apply moisturiser first, or after, or both. Keep everything as vanilla as possible, ideally no fragrance, and thick, occlusive moisturiser.

What other products do you use?

That seems high for so early on. I'm with skin+me and I started on 0.003% tret and by a year was on 0.03 but found it too strong and I've stuck to 0.027 for the last two years. It sounds like too much too soon. With skin+me they also recommend using it gradually like 3 days a week then every other day slowly going up to everyday. Slow and steady is the way to go as if your skin gets too sensitive you'll have to rest your skin and let it heal.
I was in a rush to use it everyday and to get as higher strength as possible until I read this article:

www.dearbrightly.com/blog/are-higher-strengths-of-tretinoin-always-better/#:~:text=The%20ideal%20strength%20and%20formulation,a%20different%20period%20of%20time.

I still get peeling sensitive days occasionally and I've been using tret for 3 years, with tret results are slow but worth it.

This is my code for a month of skin+me for free if anyone wants to try it. I don't know what dermatologica is like but skin+me have been great for me. When I had peeling and sensitivity I let them know and they sent me out a new doser the same day for free at a lower tret dose and it's very easy to pause or rearrange delivery dates as mine always lasts longer than a month.

I was getting this too and have the same prescription as you with Dermatica. I put on Weleda skin food 15 mins after applying tretinoin and it’s really helped. I’ve got the La Roche Posay cicaplast which is ok, but find weleda works much better. It’s a bit of a grease fest but can deal with it at bedtime!

I had a similar reaction to the third month of Dermatica. I stopped for a few days, then applied mixed with moisturiser, contacted Dermatica and took a month off (carried on using what I had even though it was past the best before date). My skin appears to be happy again so I've restarted.

I’ve only ever had peeling around my mouth and chin, and that was after I’d been using Dermatica for a couple of months and had been quite so religious about applying moisturiser. I always use Squalane after my moisturiser at night, and, when I’m peeling, use a normal SPF rather than a shine control one in the morning till I’ve sorted myself out.

journeyofsanity · 05/03/2023 22:06

I have used Tretinoin for years and I still get peeling. Thin but annoying peeling. It's random when it happens but I just out upbeat hit as my skin looks great apart from the occasional peel!

MissAtomicBomb1 · 05/03/2023 22:12

I've been using dermatica for a few months - not yet got up to 0.05 though.
I'm still getting the peeling, mainly on my chin & around my mouth area. I can't do more than every other day else it stings too. I've switched to a thicker moisturiser which I apply morning & night. I've stopped using foundation too as that was making it more noticeable.
I'm not convinced the tretinoin payoff is going to be worth it for me but I'm going to give it until summer.

3peassuit · 05/03/2023 22:13

I’d ask to go back down to .25 or apply the .05 on alternate days.

HundredMilesAnHour · 05/03/2023 22:23

Have you contacted Dermatica? They're usually very responsive. Your prescription is quite strong for only 3 months in (I think it took me at least 6 months, maybe longer to get to that strength of tret). Suggest you take it down a bit but discuss with the Dermatica dermatologist (and send them some photos so they can review properly).

VintageThoughts · 05/03/2023 22:36

I stopped using it in the end for the same reason.

I couldn't wear makeup because my skin looked like shredded wheat.

TheChosenTwo · 07/03/2023 07:56

This annoys me so much! Every now and then I still get peeling skin even though I’ve been using it for probably a year and a half. However I don’t ever buffer it and use it every other night, I’d imagine if I used a moisturiser along with it I wouldn’t get that…

Farmageddon · 07/03/2023 14:12

Like others have said 0.05% is quite a high dose for only 3 months in. Maybe if you dropped down to 0.025% for a few months it would ease off. A higher dose doesn't mean it's necessarily going to work better, consistent use over a long period of time is key to success with tretinoin so you may be better at the lower dose if it gives you less issues.

Although having said that I still get random peeling around my mouth and chin area after about 3 years using tretinoin sorry!
